Title: Re: How to find Nuns
Post by: kieran257 on Thursday 21 May 20 14:36 BST (UK)
Hi All,

Has anyone any idea on where I could get a list of Nuns for America as I know my great aunt became a nun Mary McKernan and found her in Brooklyn in 1900 but she seems to be back in Northern Ireland for the 1901 census but for the 1911 census she is gone.

I can't seem to track her on a ship either which is very strange.

I am really struggling in where I can go next.

Thank you for all your help it is so much appreciated

No info given re birthyear/birthplace so limited in searching both censuses

The only US 1900 entry for Brooklyn I can find was b 1877 and was a cousin to the head of household -occ servant

A Mary McKernan aged 24 arrived Queenstown Ireland from NY 9.12.1902 occ servant

Hi all,

I am hopping someone will be able to help me with the puzzle.  I am trying to find out what happened Mary McKernan

NAME : Mary McKernan

DATE OF BIRTH: 07/05/1877

Quote :- BIRTHPLACE: Drumderg, Draperstown, Co Derry, Northern Ireland

FATHERS NAME : Patrick McKernan

MOTHERS NAME : Anne O'Neill

SIBLINGS: Annie, James, Sarah, Theresa, Patrick, John

ADDITIONAL INFO : I found her in the 1900 census in Brooklyn after that she disappears. I have been told that she was a nun but I can't find any record of that.   I did check other years of the census and can't find her.

I would be very grateful of any help you can give me as I am completing this research for an elderly aunt as she would be so happy if I could tell her what happened.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Looks very much like the Mary McKernan in my reply above.  Nothing to suggest she was a nun in the USA

Ten years ago when we first started looking for Mary.  You were checking out The Presentation Sisters but I presume that led no where.
Convents or orders of nuns or “sisters” usually changed the names of the members to depict the change that has happened in their lives, which makes it more difficult to locate her. Unless she is mentioned in an obituary of any siblings ?  Did you explore those avenues. ?

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ph9/

This one - Sister Mary Malachy McKernan died in 1969 but they dropped the "MC" and she was buried in Missouri as Mary Malachy Kernan - died 1969 aged 97 years - would make her birth slightly earlier than what you want 1872. !!!  Might be something to investigate further.

Oh well, maybe not that one Kieran - found a naturalization in Mexico for Rose Mary Kernan born 1 September 1974 Collinstown Westmeath Ireland - religious name Sister Mary Malachy Kernan- teacher of Sister of Loretto. Loretto Convent. Bernalillo, New Mexico.
She entered New York in 1885 on the SS City Of Rome - so to early.
Back to the drawing board............

We were lucky years ago with getting info on Catholic Priests but sadly I've never come across anything for Nuns.

Hi all,
Thanks very much for all your kind help.  The presentation sisters didn't work out at all.

The only other thing I heard is that John or Johnny as he was know apparently went with Mary to America.  Could they first of went to Scotland and then on to America.

Johnny was supposed to of been a Police Officer for the NYPD?

Johnny died in Scotland

Thanks very much for all your kind help

Kieran

PS Sent to get more information on  Mary Malachy Kernan

A familysearch.org webpage has this to say about finding Nuns:-

"Priests or Nuns

Records relating to the lives of priests and/or nuns in the Catholic church are to be found primarily in two sources. The Irish Catholic Directory (published annually since 1836) and the published list Maynooth Students & Ordinations Index 1795-1982 by Patrick J. Hamell (Maynooth: no date) covering the first 100 years of those who entered the seminary at Maynooth. "

The probate of her fathers will - was James Connor a relative ?

Probate of the Will of Patrick McKernan late of Drumderg County Londonderry Farmer who died 16 February 1910 granted at Londonderry to James Connor Farmer.

Hi Sandra,

Yes you are correct she is back home in 1901 which seems strange?

Her sister Annie went to America in 1908 was Mary away before that or after as they are both not in the 1911 census.

The three above stayed at home.

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for your reply. Well Annie married John O'Halloran and was in Philadelphia and had four sons but there was no sign of Mary with her.

If you need more info on Annie just let me know and I can put more in.

Thanks again for all your help

It was years and years ago and we had a few different threads but I remember the family now.   Did we find any obituary for Annie ?

Anna O'Halloran - 1894 - 3 January 1962 Philadelphia - aged 67 years.

Hi Sandra,

No obituary was every found but she was in a home and buried by the state.

Also none of her children had obituaries either.

Unless we look for the obituaries of the Gardiners that Mary was living with in the 1900 Brooklyn census?

Thanks again for all your help

That is sad.  :'(

Mary was a cousin of Anna McKernan Gardiner.  Presumably Anthony McKernan (Anna's father)  and Patrick McKernan (Mary's father)  must have been brothers.

Did you find a death notice for Patrick McKernan or Ann McNeill McKernan ?

Had another look thru the passenger lists but nothing jumping out.

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for all as always very much appreciated.

Well I have found this and it seems to be Mary going from Liverpool to New York

She is listed in Ellis Island as Mary McKenan  and arrives 3 Oct 1901.

However, I can't read where in Philadelphia she is going to its a John McKernan who could be her uncle.  So it would be after this she would become a nun.

Maybe her Nationalization will be able to be found or his death as his obituary could maybe list her ?

Thanks again for all your help so much appreciated

Hi Sandra,

Yes you are correct she is back home in 1901 which seems strange?

Her sister Annie went to America in 1908 was Mary away before that or after as they are both not in the 1911 census.

Mc Kernon   James   22

The three above stayed at home.

Thanks for all your help as always very much appreciated
