I'm struggling to find a marriage and therefore hitting a brick wall.
I have ancestor WILLIAM MCDONALD born around 1843 in Caithness. Listed birth place as Halkirk, Caithness in his census document completed in Edinburgh. I can't seem to find his birth record either. I have on his death certificate father listed as ROBERT MCDONALD and mother ANNIE MCDONALD. I cannot find them on the 1941 census - only a george and ann (possible mix up on death certificate?).
WILLIAM MCDONALD married MARGARET MCDONALD. I also cannot find the marriage anywhere. I found in a document that they was on September 13th (looks like possibly 1872 Halkirk).
Struggling to also find anything about Margarets parents. Listed as DAVID HENDERSON and ANNIE HENDERSON (Maiden name MANSON).
Any help would be much appreciated.
Margaret born around 1851 in Caithness. Listed birth place as Dunnet, Caithness in his census document completed in Edinburgh.

You say William married Margaret McDonald - think you mean Margaret Henderson? The marriage is on SP in 1872 Halkirk

William’s birth is also on SP - 19.1.1843 - parents Robert McDonald & Ann Manson
And on Family Search. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBM6-9G9
Parents marriage also on SP in 1842 so they weren’t married at the time of the 1841 census

Thank you. I’ve realised I’ve had exact search on and surname on marriage registered as Macdonald rather than McDonald on SP.
I’ve got there marriage line and wondered was it common to put where they’re where from after their name? looks like Robert Mcdonald from Westfield and then looks like it says Achakar after Ann? Dont know if anyone can work it out better than me.
On family search it shows a potentially birth date for Ann 1821.
I’m struggling to link them to a census in 1951. From records looks like he had a brother Robert born 1850. But no census search is bringing them all to the same place so I’m perplexed!

Yes, it was quite common.

Try posting an extract here and see what people think.

Do not trust that. FS has this nasty tendency to assume that women were all aged 21 when they married. (And that men were aged 25).

There's a family at Lythmore, Thurso in 1851 consisting of Robert Macdonald, 35, born Reay; wife Ann, 36, born Thurso; children William, 8; Donald, 5; Jane, 2; all born Halkirk; and Robert, under 1, born Thurso. (transcription at https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl)
That, assuming their ages are accurate, gives a DoB for Robert in 1815/1816 and for Ann in 1814/1815.

Hi,
Fabby. I’ll update later as file too large on my phone.
That looks like a good match to me! Thank you very much!
Can’t see to find any deaths from either Robert or Ann that matches these date of births which is strange.
It was far easy for late 1800s when mothers maiden names where then input on the marriage records. Parish records leave a lot to be desired! Haha.
I believe Ann’s maiden name to be Manson.

I believe Ann’s maiden name to be Manson.
I thought you had found William's death certificate - does it not say what his mother's maiden surname is?
Even if it doesn't, his marriage certificate should tell you. Have you looked at that?
It would be a bit of a coincidence if both William's mother and Margaret's mother were named Ann Manson, surely?
-
Apologies this is me getting mixed up. Williams death certificate lists mother’s maiden name as Manson.
Margaret’s (his wife) maiden name is Henderson as per the married certificate/death certificate. Her mother’s maiden name is Andrew I believe.

Odd that there doesn't seem to be a death certificate for Ann Manson or Macdonald. Maybe she died at such a ripe old age that the informant didn't know her maiden surname. Or in an institution, perhaps?
