This is a one off limited offer 'cos I am bored and waiting for a job to start - I live in Whitehaven and have a little time to kill, so don't mind taking a few photos or doing simple searches in the records office
Andrew
-
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your offer...
Could you get the details from the St Bees MI's of
Andrew Patterson or Pattinson, and his wife Frances (Mossop)
not sure when he died, about 1870ish
Thanks
Jim
-
If buried at St Bees I'll go photograph them as well
I used to work with Andrew Patterson (thought he looked old)
No problem, I am really getting bored with daytime telly
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

It sounds rather like this chap lurking in the periphery of my tree (an Engine driver 1861, 1871)-

d Q3 1874 - Whitehaven (just a guess from FreeBMD)
Spouses:

Thanks Andrew, although I have been told that the headstones have been taken down and are stacked up in the corner.
Geoff, Yes thats them alright, he named his first two children after his wifes parents...
My GG Grandfather was Andrew's (1823) brother.

Shouldn't be a problem as a lot of the gravestones up here have had that done, but they normally leave them up against the walls or laid down at one end of the churchyard.
Personally i dont think they have the right, when you get buried you buy that plot, and they shouldn't be moved, the history that gets lost - Look at Whitehaven George Washingtons grandmother's grave got lost 'cos they moved all the headstones, and they said all the remains were re-intured -- where at no-one knows.
Gravestones are records just as important any other records in a library
Anyway we'll see
Andrew

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for looking for me, I owe you one!
Jim

My dear Andrew
Just stumbled across your thread and my heart quickened when I saw mention of PATTINSON & Whitehaven avec St. Bees from Jim and Geoff E!
I feel very bad because I do not have certain information to give to you... but if you happen to be in a Whitehaven Anglican grave yard when the surnames of PATTINSON and/or RUSSELL demand your attention (death circa 1870-1901) you know where to find me! :) [First names of James, Joseph, Elizabeth & Mary most common. (sigh)]
Sincerely, Donna
-
Well hello Donna
Are you well?
I don't mind going back to the records office, and having a look at the inscriptions, as I have a little time to kill at the moment.
The records office is only 100 yards away, however do you have any birthdates 'cos I have a list of baptisms at St Nicholas from 1694 to 1837 and burials same dates
No problem if you don't
Andrew
-
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the offer. I have very little information and was wondering if you could help.
I am looking for a John Mitchell born- supposedly 8/1/1805 in Whitehaven father Thomas.
Is it too much trouble to look for a baptism for him to get his mothers name, And maybe siblings or his parents marriage?
I appreciate any help,
Holly

I can but try,

Well hello Donna
Are you well?
I'm just dandy, Andrew (thank you for asking)... and you?
My research papers seem to have gone a-muck... but, I do not want to miss your kind offer! Please forgive my typing in haste.
I can only remember that my great uncle Anthony PATTINSON married a Helen nee ASHLEY... about 1897, Whitehaven... and they had two children (that I could find so far): Arthur (b. 1900) and Elizabeth Russell PATTINSON (b. 190?).
I'm beginning to realize that England is not like Canada... one cannot simply go to a small town (not meaning Whitehaven!) to expect everyone to know their name! :)
Kindest regards,
Donna

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I would love if you found ANY Lamploughs. the earlier the better.
I have not "done" them yet from your district, Is this too vague? If so just please look up the name for me and find me one, Also spelt Lamplugh,
Thanks
Jakky.
-
Jakky
No problem, you are aware the place Lamplugh is up here and I believe the family was quite big up here
Andrew
-
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for offering lookups! I would really appreciate some help with the following:
Marriage of:
Burdett Charles Blowe (a.k.a. Charles Burdett) b. Alston Moor c. 1809
and
Jane (Fisher?) b. Whitehaven c 1809
I *think* that Jane's maiden name will be Fisher but I'm not 100%. If it is, I would also really appreciate a lookup of her birth, c. 1809 in Whitehaven.
I'm sorry I can't be a bit more specific, but this is all the info I have.
(However, it may be worth noting that I think one of their children is called 'James *Ellershaw* Blowe'. Maybe useful for earlier maiden names?)
Any info at all would be really great.
Many thanks in advance,
Sam
-
Hi Andrew,
Could you possibly try and find a marriage between James Burney & Ann Henney or Hanney. About 1844 in Whitehaven their son Thomas was born in 1845/6. On the 1851 Census they where living in celler Queen st. Thanks alot Patmel.
-
Lamplugh or lamplough
Wow, there is so much information about the names and the place it is amazing I live just down the road and I can't believe the history, I've drove past the old manor house wall seen the crest carved into it and past the church loads of times but never realized its importance to the area
I am getting that much information I don't know where to start, if you could give me a pointer, and I will go have a look in the churchyard as well as get you a picture of the coat of arms carved into the manor house wall

I'll just add to that by saying I think that the coat of arms at the manor house is similar to that mentioned above

Donna
I have found a few Pattinsons in this area and need to check them out
If I remember correctly you were looking some time ago for some farmers called Pattinson, am I right?
Andrew
-
You are correct, Andrew
My Pattinson's were mainly farmers in the Lake District. Whitehaven is mentioned in old (1930ish) letters and printed on old (1890ish) pictures.
I fear that I do not know your countryside, thus when I say places like Drigg, St. Bees and Cleator, I really don't know if I'm close enough to Whitehaven to bother you with graveyard requests. :-[
Thank you so much for your time, Andrew
Donna
-
Donna
Cleator is less than three miles away Drigg a bit farther but no problem, if Drigg is well kept no problem, I'm a bit dubious about walking through long grass in a graveyard at Drigg (adders). Drigg is next to where I normally work so not far
St Bees would be Whitehaven Records Office as most of the gravestones have been removed, but the records of inscriptions are there
I can't see Drigg or Cleator records being a problem either
In fact that picture you had ages ago, that church may have graves in it, if you have some scanned pictures that could help again, but lets see first
(I need to go to bed now as it's 3:30)
Goodnight

Dear Andrew,
What can I say? I am gobsmacked, you have done so much for me. Just to think I was saving the Lamploughs for the future.
My dad sure has an interesting lineage, on my mums side they were all clog makers.
This probably accounts for the illusions of grandeur which my children accuse me of, time to polish up the old tiara methinks,
I cannot thank you enough, ;D ;D ;D
Jakky.

Hello again Andrew,
Just to say the last message was tongue in cheek, in all probability my ancestors were the ag. labs and serfs and merely named after the village, but it will be fun finding out,
the links by the way are great,
thank you ;D

I've looked for the information on John Mitchell in the records office, I have been through all the church records for Whitehaven: Christchurch; Holy Trinity; St James and St Nicholas, and can't locate John Mitchell with a father of Thomas also tried egremont
Can you tell me what religion John was, it may be I couldn't see the wood for trees and have missed it, but don't think so.
I will have another look, haven't tried St Bees, but do you have any more information
Andrew
-
Hi Andrew,
I have never come across a religion for John.
The info I have is that he was born 8 Jan 1805 in Whitehaven. That his father was Thomas. He immigrated to Australia in 1842 on the Marchioness of Bute and he died in New South Wales on the 20th September 1878.
Yesterday, I decided to trawl through Family Search to get some clues and came up with a listing of a John Mitchell b- 8 Jan 1805 c- 27 Jan 1805 St James. To parents JOHN and ELIZABETH.
I could find no other children or marriage of a John and Elizabeth on the IGI. But was suprised when I found an THOMAS and ELIZABETH with 8 children all christened in St James or St Nicholas (one listed as Mitchel). Even more intresting is that they have a "gap" between a child born 1796 and one born 1808. A "gap" in which John could fill.
What is the easiest way to check this out? Is it possible to get John's christning and see if the details of Elizabeth his mother match Elizabeth the mother of the others??
Thanks again so much for looking, and sorry if I have sent you on a wild goose chase.
Holly
-
Hol
I'll have another look tomorrow, no problem I found details of one of mine, in looking
Andrew
at least I know its St James which makes it easier, the religion is anglican, its the non conformist ones that are difficult
-
Thanks Andrew,
Is St Nicholas also anglican ?
Hol
-
Yes, St Nicholas, St James, Christchurch and Holy Trinity all Anglican, just St James now left the others are now a gym (Christchurch), shell (Trinity) or just a tower after a fire (St Nicholas), fantastic buildings with fantastic insides
Andrew
-
Ok Great
Thankyou Andrew,
Hol
-
Hi Andrew, just back from my hollies and saw your post. I have been looking for John Whitfield (C1803 ish) for many years now. He was a clogger and lived in either Queen st or New Town in Whitehaven. I can't find him online in the 1851 census but part of it is missing. Would you be able to look at the records office for me.By then he was re-married to Jane. What I am really looking for is his place of birth if that detail is on the census by then. Many thanks Cass
-
Back there tomorrow
Andrew

So far I can confirm your information on John son of John and Elizabeth born 8 Jan 1805,
I have looked and came up with:
a William Mitchell (soldier) married Mary McMina April 8th 1799
a John Mitchell (soldier) married Hannah Cummins Nov 13th 1813
a Thomas Mitchell (surgeon) married Isobell Mossop Mar 17th 1822, who had a daughter Mary bapt Aug 3 1829
I don't know if these are yours as they are all Holy Trinity, not St James
Still looking for a John son of Thomas
Andrew

Andrew
I don't suppose you know the religion?? makes it a bit easier
-
Thanks Andrew, shame the baptism didnt give mothers maiden name. I dont know to tentivly take this as mine, Does the baptism give any info about the parents other than name?
Thanks again,
Holly
-
What a kind offer, Andrew - I was so annoyed at not having managed myself during my recent holiday with family to Cumbria.
If the records office have anything for All Saints, Cockermouth, I would really appreciate if you could have a look for the following:
Wilford (Wilfred?) Cape married an Elizabeth Swinburn on 21 December 1818 at All Saints (guessing at moment that they are my line) - hopeful of any additional details re this marriage and possibly any sign of children (in particular if there was a John/Jonathon born about 1820). If I am onto the right family, Elizabeth looks to have been head of household at 1841, assume Wilfred dead by then, with John and Dinah living at same address with baby Wilfred (certain this Wilfred is 'mine').
Said John/Jonathan Cape marrying a Dinah (surname not known) possibly just pre 1837 (believe they in turn had a Wilfred born 1841 - will be ordering this cert from GRO).
Thanks in advance.
By the way, I searched around the graveyard at All Saints for any sign of this lot but only found one Cape gravestone - a William died 1848 aged 75 and wife Jane died 1850 aged 79 - no one could find this couple in 1841 Census for area (don't even know if they tie in anywhere with 'my' lot).
-
HI again
youll be ready for your job starting all these replies youve had but back to their religion
I think they were catholics and there was some connection to ireland

I had a quick look in the Cockermouth All Saints records and I can confirm the marriage between a Wilfred Cape and Elizabeth Swinburn but I'll give you the references in case you need them:
Microfilm JAC 448, PR136/263, page 97 the marriage was by licence
I have searched about five years either side of 1820, to find a baptism of John without success, but, I have found the folowing:
Bapt 26 Sept 1899
William son of George and Jane Cape, Weaver, Cockermouth, JAC447,PR136/258 page 88
Bapt 13 July 1824
Anne Daugt of Joseph and Mary Cape, Miller, Cockermouth, JAC447 PR136/258 page 113
I will be back tomorrow, but have an appointment mid afternoon
I hope this doesn't confuse

That's great finds, thanks, Andrew. Now if I can just find John's marriage to Dinah and whether or not he was in fact a son of Wilford and Elizabeth (who married in 1818) then maybe this would complete another part of the ever expanding tree.

I've received your welcome email just perfectly. I haven't had a chance to check out the British Columbia branch... but, I cannot wait to do some digging! I've seen the name 'Egremont' many times in my searches.

Sorry its took so long I have some information, how useful it is I don't know
I have found an Edward Whitfield, head (Clogger) of 105 Queen Street on the 1861 Census, 28 years old, born Whitehaven, married to Martha age 26, born Allonby, daughter Mary Martha age 1, born Whitehaven
The above is confirmed by a Whitehaven Trade Directory of 1861, pg 218
I have found a John Whitfield a widower aged 48 Clagger (should read Clogger) on the 1881 census of the Union Workhouse Whitehaven - this age could be wrong
I can't pick up any trace of John on any other census indexes.
I am unable to find John on a trade directory, or the 1851 census
I have found on Ancestory a John married a Jane in 1830 in Haltwhistle, but he was born 1777
I have one day left before starting work (Monday) do you have anything that could point me in the right direction - what I was thinking is the Workhouse Records if they have not been sent for scanning which I suspect they may
I'm trying to find an old street map of Whitehaven to see where 105 Queen Street was, as its not where it is now - believe me there is quite a coincidental reason I know that ;) ;)
Andrew
-
Thanks Andrew, The Edward Whitfield is the son of the John that I am looking for. John was dead by the 1861 census. The John Whitfield in the workhouse in 1881 should actually read Edward Whitfield and is the above Edward. His wife and daughter both died shortly after the 1861 census and Edward ended up in the workhouse. Someone did find John on the 1841 census for me but he has disappeared, with all his family, in 1851 but re-appeared for his death in 1859. Apart from his 2nd marriage to Jane in 1846 I have no other useful info. I feel that I have been looking for him for ever so will just have to leave him for now to re-gain my sanity. Thanks for all your efforts and good luck in your new job. Cass

Best wishes for the new job from me too... ;D!

Thank you, if I come across anything else I'll post it here - good thing about site where I work is early finish Fridays.

I do hope that my personal message will explain much.
I forgot to mention that I do have access to ancestry.com. Census images are wonderful... but, you are giving me so much more information with detailed pictures, etc...
Do you have a lost ancestor in Saskatchewan? I'd love to help. :)
Sincerely, Donna

You're finding some good stuff here Andrew, Nice one!!!
Donna, you can find some Mossop information here

Thank you for the link, Jim. How exciting!
Research flood gates seem to have been unleashed for me! My great-great grandfather, William Pattinson, came from St. Bees. I wish I had more time to explore, but I must be patient until harvest is done.
Happy day,

Hello Andrew.
Greetings from Australia. I have just stumbled across your entry and would really appreciate if you were able to help me in any small way. My known connection is to the REED, GRAHAM and HALLIFAX families of Whitehaven.
James Reed was born in 1805 and his wife Ann Graham in 1803, both in Whitehaven. They were married at the Holy Trinity Church in 1833. Ann's parents were William Graham and Ann Hallifax. That Ann was born in Whitehaven leads me to assume her parents were from that town or lived in close proximity. I suspect all were buried in Whitehaven.
I know Ann and James had a son, Henry...without him where would I be? What I don't know, and can't seem to find out anywhere yet, is did he have siblings? Would there be any records you could access that might provide some information?
The above information is the little I know about his branch of my family in Whitehaven. Any clues or snippets of information that would help me learn more about them would be really appreciated.
Your offer of help in research is very generous and greatly appreciated.

Andrew
Hi Andrew ,
Thanks for the good work - Ive just re looked at my info and read it again and it says John father of Thomas. Not John father Thomas. Plus I have just found another document that says father JOHN.
So the one christened to John and Elizabeth born 8 Jan 1805, Is our John. Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase.
I traced up their line and found there marriage.
A question would the parish record have info on there parents etc? Or was that not written.
Thanks ,
Holly
-
Parish records differ from year to year, some times it is just the names of the Groom & Bride, sometimes Groom & Bride and witnesses and occasionaly but not often and more later ones have parents
More often than not it says eg:
24 Aug 1789, Thomas Smith and Ann Swainson both of this parish, the ministers name and sometimes - Witnessed by James Birbeck and Taylor Swainson and if the people were of age and if by licence
Quite often one of the parents turn up as witnesses as above
As a matter of interest: Taylor Swainson above was one of the unsung inventors of the locomotive steam engine and is a direct ancestor as I found out a few days ago
So getting back to the question, sometimes but not often!

Good morning Andrew...and it is indeed a good morning now! The weather may be bleak, but the day is fine.
What a fantastic find...I wait now in anticipation of the extra details for the BDMs...when your time allows.
I really do appreciate what you are doing...thank you

This one of yours???
Its the parish records of a baptism in Whitehaven Oct 16th 1813
Still working on the others but a bit slow due to hours I'm putting in at work, Christmas soon.
Andrew

Elsie
do you have a Jacob Reed in your family??
I have found one that married a Mary Ann Dobbins, in 1857 ish, born circa 1835
I also have got a copy of ...... the 1786 Marriage records of Samuel Reed to Mary Kelly both of St Bees, which I will scan and upload for you
I am still looking for the other stuff but I really am working a lot of hours at work and I am litterally exhausted - I regretfully said I was going to work tomorrow at 06:00 - I must be mad
I've not forgot though
Andrew
-
I really appreciate your efforts Andrew, but remember your priority has to be to yourself...I am a patient person. You have a life as well.
As far as family members are concerned, I don't know who is who. I was hoping to be able to work backwards. It would be surprising if there were not siblings from both generations. That's why I thought the 1851/41 censuses might have been first port of call.
Probably the best thing to do is keep a record of them all as you help me find them...over time...and maybe the pieces will fit together.
Slow and steady...

Hi Andrew
The next time you fancy oggling the lass in the RO, could you take a look at 1831/1833 for any sign of my elusive Hugh Tooley/O'Toole.
Parents Robert (according to marriage cert) and Rose Ann/Rosanna (from the early census.
Still not found them in 1841 but still presuming they're in Lancs as a child was born to Robert and Rosanna in Liverpool c1837
Thanks a lot
Lou

Just to clarify I never said she worked there, there is a good looking lass who goes there
There are too many people from Whitehaven who use this site
Wednesday is the next time, but can't promise

Hi Andrew
I hope your offer still stands. My great great grandfather William COPELAND was born 17 July 1805 Whitehaven (source Family Bible). I think I have found his baptism on IGI 30 Oct 1805 St James Whitehaven, son of Thomas COUPLAND and Mary SCOTT. I'd like the baptism record confirmed from Parish Registers if possible, please. Also from IGI it appears that Thomas and Mary had another son, Thomas bpt 21.12.1806 also at St James but I can find no trace of him in 1851 census onwards. perhaps he died as a child?
Thanks a million

A few pages back on this thread, you posted a photo of the headstone of Andrew Patterson,
taken in Egremont Cemetary.
Do you still have the original (higher res) photo?
Not a problem if you dont, its just that a descendant of his has been in touch and would like the info from it, would you believe he actually sent me a photo of Andrew Patterson b 1857.

the Isaac I'am looking for married pre 1828 and I have no idea where he came from other than his son was born in 1828 but he wasn't from Whitehaven or at least I can't find head nor tail of him prior to 1828.
Could be from Ireland
Thanks for looking, if you can find one pre 1828 marriage especially to a Jane

I cant find him anywhere on the web all i can suggest is you put a page on the Irish page .
also try mcNulty . i have even looked for the deaths and marriage for the rest of his earlier family and nothing is coming up anywhere .But i did find
McNULTY Charles Deaths Dec 1838 in whitehaven if he was about 12 it could be his brother.
McNULTY Jane Deaths Mar 1864 in whitehaven could be his mum
Iv been at it a while now checking all the 1851 census ,cant find Isaac nulty but found Isaac Hultz abt 1829 Whitehaven, Cumberland, England wife Elinor Hultz abt 1831 Saltham, Cumberland, England .
then a Jane MC Hultz abt 1844 St Bees, Cumberland, England Granddaughter living with the Reed ,
Isaac appears again on the 1871 with a reed niece living with then.
have you look at the 1841 census , i was hoping to find him living with a relative somewere that might have lead to were his parents came from.
it looks like a few differant spelling
McNULTY , Hultz, NULTY , macnuly,
don't give up we are all up for the challenge ??? ???

hello
just a little something, I have been researching Nulty in Liverpool it has also been recorded as Nutty very confusing at times
Doreen
-
Naylor
I wouldn't be suprised if this Isaac came from Liverpool but at that time Whitehaven as a port had not yet gone into decline and had a considerable trade with Ireland and the Americas
If my Isaac did come from Ireland (which is a guess) it would have been through either Liverpool or Whitehaven I would have thought, but probally more likely to be Whitehaven as there was loads of work down all the coal and iron ore mines, even the harbour itself. I know at least two who worked on tugs
I can give help you with my Nulty info if any use
-

If you should happen to go to Camerton, could you please look out for John SCURR, bur 1860 and his wife Margaret (1851) ... thanks.
-
I'll give it ago, I don't know what it will be like underfoot as it lays in a bend of the River Derwent, I honestly thought the path and signs were a joke, I can't believe people went to church there
But I'll see

Can't find any 'Scurrs' at Camerton, but a few are unreadable
For a church in the middle of nowhere it gets a good congregation
A few Scotts, no Scurrs

Thanks again anyway Andrew!
There's some nice pics of it here

Not sure if you are still wanting people to contact you re searches, but if so can you help me.
I have a James Doyle born in 1829 in Whitehaven. He married Ann but not sure of her maiden name. He was a coalminer.
I have him in the 61, 71, 81 census living in Cleator.
I would really like to find him before 61, or his parents names would be great.
Thanks very much. (PS I know what you mean about daytime telly)

James Dolan - was he in Whitehaven for the 1901 Census
I have got one on the 1851 census in Cleator a lodger working as a miner
did he die in 1902?
and what religion? if cleator or "the moor" (cleator moor)
This would help -
Andrew
-
Andrew
Did you mean James Doyle (dolan)?
I couldn't find him on the 01 census. I am sorry but don't know his religion.
He was living in the 61, 71, 81 census in Bowthorn Road Cleator, not sure if that is what you mean. With not coming from that area I dont know Cleator or Cleator Moor, I thought they were the same.
His son James who was born in 1861 was living and working in Cleator Moor when he got married in 1884. And I don't know when he died either, sorry.
Angela

Sorry it was Doyle I mean't 'cos there is one in Whitehaven in 1901
and one who died 1902

How old was the one in the 01 census and how old was he when he died. I couldn't find him in the 91 census either.
I don't think he would have been catholic, but not 100% sure.

James Doyle Widower aged 73 Retired born Co Cork (Possibly Blind) in 1901 Census
Could this be yours??
Andrew
-
Andrew
I don't think so, the age is about right but on all the other census info I have he was born in Whitehaven. Also no mention of him being blind.
Did you say you found him in the 51 census, what info did it give for that one?
Thanks anyway.

Hello again, Andrew.
Phew, you have been busy with the digital camera...you put many of us to shame. I have had a look at the various pics but unfortunately do not see any obvious link to my Cape line at the moment. Your efforts, though, are very much appreciated and will perhaps help others researching the name. I will also keep details 'just in case' they do one day tie-in (especially as they are from an area fairly close to that where 'my' Capes seem to have lived).
I know you do not manage there as often, but if you ever come across anything else at the records office on the Cape name in Cockermouth c 1800 - 1840ish (as before, probably associated to All Saints), I would welcome same. Still struggling to tie down parents for John Cape who married (I assume) a Dinah (unknown surname) possibly c1837 or anything on a Wilford Cape who married an Elizabeth Swinburn in c1818 (hopeful that they were John's parents).
Meantime, thanks again, Andrew - you are a gem :).
-
Andrew
I think the wife of James Doyle is called Ann Middleton. I can't find the details on free BMD.
I have put a request on the main site.
Thanks

I could only match a possible two, I'll have another look and see if I've missed any
Unless you've already looked, please don't bother.
FreeBMD has deaths for Alexander HENDERSON Q4 1846 and Esther HENDERSON Q4 1848. Any chance of finding burials please? Most of their children were baptised Scots/Presbyterian so it could be awkward.
With any luck, my census lookup request on the other Request board will give a clue to the parish in which they were living in 1841.
EDIT 1841 seems to suggest that Alexander was not around in 1841 so the one who died in 1846 could have been a grandchild ... or he could have been at sea I suppose.
Thanks

Hi Louise
I've not had a look in the records office yet, I have found the following on line which may be of help:
I looked on the earlier Census for his brother and found that Adam aged 17 was living in Whitehaven, the head of the family was a 'Little Ogilvie' who is down as aged 31 in the 1871 census and was as far as I can make out a travelling Draper, born nr Cockermouth, I think in June 1842, and baptised on the 12th June 1842 at Plumbland ref: Vol 25 Page 98
His parents were I think Adam Ogilvy and Margaret, the name Adam would fit in with the brother of Walter as he was the first born male
I've not checked this with birth records but confident
Andrew

Andrew
Sorry to hear you have not been well.
Just wondering if you had a look at the church yard to see if you could see any gravestones for Peter Doyle who died in 1856 in Whitehaven. I am pretty confident that he is the right one.
Many thanks

Hi Andrew
I live abroad and have reached a brick wall re: research on my Hall family. I don't know whether you are still able to assist anyone with look-ups but I would be very grateful if you might be able to find any family details in excise records at the Whitehaven records office. I need any family and work details concerning my ggg grandfather John Hall (snr) born around 1785 who was an excise officer (possibly born Middleham, Yorks but not sure of birthplace) in Whitehaven between Jan 1847 and Mar 1851 (dates of possible son John Hall jnr's marriage and census). I am trying to prove that John Hall jnr, b 1815, a saddler born in Wheelock, Cheshire who married Mary Wilkinson in Parton on 6 Jan 1847 was his son. I think John Hall snr may have married twice firstly to someone possibly named Jane (in about 1813) who may have been John Hall jnr's mother, the second time to Ann. John and/or his wife Jane lived in Wheelock, Cheshire at the time of his son John Hall's birth (possibly involved in salt tax administration) and possibly lived elsewhere before moving to Whitehaven. I do not know the maiden names of the wives but Ann was from Hunmanby, Yorks. The second marriage, if he was the John Hall snr from Middleham would be 1848-9 approx. John and his second wife Ann lived at 33 Kingston Place, Preston Quarter in 1851, 57 Kingston Place in 1861 and 118 Foxhouses Rd, Preston Quarter in 1871. Their daughter Frances Mary Ann Hall married John Brown Williamson of the Williamson shipyard in Whitehaven which could be another line of research. If you can assist in any simple way I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Carol

I'm going back there regularly now, Wednesday nights and occasional Friday afternoons
Saturday is for work - car goes for its repairs this week and need to pay for them.
Andrew
-
Hi Andrew
Hope you're OK.
Don't bother any more with the BELLs thanks.
Let's try some HENDERSONs
Alexander and Esther HENDERSON had some children baptised in Kent (Scots Church) 1805-1810 and two in Whitehaven-
Betsy 22 Aug 1819 Holy Trinity
Sarah 11 Jan 1818 Scotch St Presb
Is it possible to get Alexander's occupation?
Esther (60) was living in Charles St in 1841 with son Ephraim. In 1851 (a cripple) he was with his sister so I assume Esther had died - can you find a burial for her please?
Esther HENDERSON (Jnr) had married Robert NESBITT at W/H HT on 13 March 1833 ... I think she was young; could you check her age and any other info for the marriage?
Robert NESBITT died in 1845 - his death was recorded in the Cumberland Pacquet although he was only a labourer ... just a thought - would the deaths of Alexander and Esther HENDERSON have appeared in the newspaper too? I assume Alexander was before 1841.
Sometime between the death of Robert NESBITT and the 1851 census, Esther (Jnr) may have married Daniel LANDY/LUNDY and they had a 2 year old daughter in 1851. She lived in Charles St with both husbands, so that should give you a parish (unless she married Presb).
Daniel and Esther LUNDY/LANDY seem to disappear by 1861 and the crippled Ephraim HENDERSON lived in the workhouse until his death in Q1 1875.
I'd be grateful for anything you can find on any of these people.
Thanks
Geoff
-
Hi, me again
I don't know if Whitehaven Office has any Maryport stuff ...
An ancestor of mine was William SCOTT; he was a mariner which (hopefully) explains why he missed the 1861 census, but his wife and family were in Furnace Rd, Maryport. By 1871 his wife was widowed and in Senhouse St, Maryport and I have no reason to think they ever left the town. The GRO death index has William SCOTTs in the Cockermouth district in Q4 1861 and Q1 1864 ... he would have been 50ish ... can you find his burial please?

Not sure if you are still offering your services for Whitehaven, but if you are could you please look up a John Nicholson for me he was born around 1891 in Egremont, Cumberland. I would really love to know his parents names.
Also if you have had time to look to see if Peter Doyle was in the graveyard, died 1856.
Many thanks, hope you are keeping well

Hi Andrew.
Wow you are an amazing person doing all this for other people - very kind.
I'm not sure if this is possible as I have no idea how big the Whitehaven cemetary is but I am researching Dixons from the Workington /Whitehaven area. Am interested in Thomas Dixon - born abt 1850's and died around 1902. Some kids registered under Whitehaven and some at Cockermouth - so not totally sure if he's there. Daughter Hannah Elizabeth Dixon and son John Thomas Dixon (moved to NZ).
Thanks Elaine Dixon

Hello,
Thanks for all the assistance you have given in relation to Whitehaven. If you have the time, here is one more for you.
My Aunt Violet Hallett Thomas was one of three children of Robert Hallett born about 1888 and Catherine Quinn born about 1891 both in Whitehaven. Catherine's parents were James and Ellen Quinn. Robert's parents were Walter Hallett born about 1864 maybe Gate Fulford in Yorkshire and Sarah Jane Hutton born about 1866 and they were married in Whitehaven in 1886. At time of this marriage Walter's father John was listed on their marriage certificate as deceased. He was said to have died in an accident aboard a ship in Hamburg Harbor. Looking for John and his wife and family, etc. I found one candidate John Hallett born 1818 in Dorset and wife Jane born about 1930 also Dorset but I have not been able to get Walter's birth certificate to verify his mother's name. I say candidate only because the 1861, 1871, and 1888 Dorset census lists this John as having a son Walter born in 1864 but in Dorset not Yorkshie?? Any info on these folks is welcome especially if we can verify the correct John.
Thanks

CALL MY BLUFF: Panel show. Two teams of three celebrities try to bluff each other over the meaning of bizarre words from the dictionary. One of UK TV's longest running quiz shows the original host was Robin Ray and then Robert Robinson. Original captains were Frank Muir and Robert Morley. After a spell off air the show currently airs weekday lunchtimes and is hosted by Bob Holness with captains being Sandi Toksvig and Alan Coren. The show was based on an American original that ran on NBC in 1965.

Hi
thought I had something here - I've found a Walter in Yorkshire born Circa 1864 ish, with parents Joseph (not a john) and Sarah:
1871 Census, Yorkshire, Myton, District 51
No 1 Summers St, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire
Joseph Hallett, Hd, 29, Joiner
Sarah Hallett, Wf, 37
Thomas Hallett, Sn, 10, Scholar
Walter Hallett, Sn, 7, Scholar
James, Sn, 6, Scholar
Ada, Daughter, 2
I've got this in 1861 as well, how frustrating!!!!

If you're interested in reading more Cumbrian dialect, please check the Whitehaven News next week. My dear e-friend, Malcolm (from the April 2005 Rootschat Challenge) has written a letter to the paper about my family. It includes a dialect story and poem written by my great-grandfather, Joseph Pattinson, in 1892. (The one with the tattiepot mention. :)) The editor has said that it might appear in the March 16th edition.
Happy day,

I will look out for it
Do you know what "oxters" are yet though?
It is a real West Cumbrian word (a part of the body) and the anagram is right
Maybe I should start a thread up ;) :D
Hoos a'bowt: the chaff, shooder, neaf, and cawf ?
Why on earth did they need secret codes during the war ;) ;)

Hi again, Andrew
Yes, thanks... I now know what oxters are, thanks to Geoff's anagram. :) We have the same saying here... with the word 'oxters' replaced, of course.
Ta for now, Donna
P.S. I think a dialect thread would be a dandy idea! ;)

Robert Hallett, Head, 67, Labourer, Yorks, Street Houses
Ann Hallett, Wife, 71, Fulford
Matilda Hallett, G Daugh, 7, Fulford
Alfred Hallett, G Daugh, 1, Fulford
=======================
Whitehaven - 1891 2 Manns Court?

Sarah J Hallett, Wife, 26, - Whitehaven
Robert Hallett, Son, 3, Whitehaven
James Hallett, Son, 1, Whitehaven

Thanks for your efforts.
I have been tempted by the entries in the 1881 census with data below but there is no mention of a John Hallett. Maybe he was deceased this early? If this were correct it seems to show his mothers family as well????

Opps. I said 15 years older in previous msg, but the head of household shown as Alfred was only 5 years older than Walter. Sorry.

Theres something wrong there I think, I wonder if it should say brother? It does show a couple of errors, theres two related families there with different surnames (holdsworth)???
The following census finds Alfred in Newcastle, seemed to move about a bit
I have seen the bapt'm record for Robert, at St Nicholas's church, 1888 Feb 19th, to parents Walter and Sarah Jane Hallett, of 7 Mossops Buildings, High Church St, Walters Occupation: Engine Builder
Record Ref JAC383, P/R 107/19
I can't YET find any ref other than the wedding records of Walter (which I have got a copy of) - to this John.
I'll have another go on Friday.

Hi,
Continuing Thanks. :)
Brother, Cousin, even Uncle could fit.
Maybe Harriet Houldsworth is Walter's mother? She shows up as a servant in the Gate Fulford 1871 census. Wonder why the younger Houldsworth gal is called a sister?
I just sent off for the birth cert. for what I hope is the correct Walter. I had a copy of his marriage cert. (Actually I gave it to my cousin whose mother is the Hallett in out family.)
I am going line by line through all the Gate Fulford census pages.

to make it a bit easier where all your family Anglican, it means a lot less records to go through
Andrew
-
I don't think any of their immedate family will recall if that is so, BUT I know that when Aunt Violet (Walter's grand daughter) married she was Catholic. On their marrriage listing, it said that Walter and Sarah Jane were married at the Church of St. Nicholas of the Established Church. On Robert's baptism record, St Nicholas is the site. That is all I have on that.
I got the downloads of these records. Thank You.

Hi
I don't know if your offer still stands?
I need to find birth details of Frances Lawson Hinds Born Maryport 1856 ish! I know her mother was called Frances born liverpool 1818 dressmaker and I know that her father was either a captain or master seaman (if there is any difference) He is not on the 51 or 61 census and then he died before the next one.
Do you have acces to the 41 census or brith details.
Many thanks
Kerrie

Decco
quick question, do you know the religion, its not important just makes things easier
and to be a captain you need to have a masters certificate and you should be able to trace details of these
Andrew
-
Hello,
How about this family? Some of the data looks okay?? This is from 1851 census before francis Lawson was born.

Hi
I have found that one relative was buried at Christchurh allonby - I don't have a clue on this but guess its Anglican.
The family details you found all tie in but on the 51 census before Francis was born her father was at sea this is the bit I'm really stuck on.
Thanks

Hello, I finally got a copy of Walter Hallett's birth cert. to add to his wedding cert. His father was John and his mother was Harriett. Neither document gives her maiden name. I am tending to think Harriett Houldsworth noted above is his mother. The 1881 Whitehaven, Cumberland census shows a Harriett Houldsworth, born 1840, with a son Walter, born 1864, and a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Houldsworth?, born 1868, all living in household of Alfred Hallett, born 1859, and Agness, born 1859, and their daughter Mary H., born 1881. The 1861 census for Gate Fulford shows the household of a Robert, born 1794, and Ann, born 1790, Hallett with a daughter {maybe in-law} Harriett, born 1840, with her daughter Matilda, born 1854, and son Alfred, born 1860.
I found the above Robert as a widow in 1871 Yorkshire census but I have not found Harriett in 1871 - yet. I am tending to think these are the correct people - or is that wishfull thinking at this point??

Hi Andrew R,
Are you still doing look ups in Whitehaven Archive? If so would you be willing to do something for me please?
Edward CLARKE was the innkeeper at the Stanley Arms, Calder Bridge/ Ponsonby. He died in November 1847 and his wife, Bridget died in 1856. Can you look in the burial register for Ponsonby please to see if they were buried there? I now know they weren't taken back to Bootle to be buried.
According to the IGI they christened 3 children at Ponsonby. Lucy Oct 1841, Edward Sep 1843 and Isaac Jan 1846. I believe the baby died the following September.
I'd be ever so grateful if you can do this but if not then please don't worry.
Thank you in advance.

hello andrew
i am trying to find the burial place of my gg grandfather JOSEPH GILL
he died 21mar1877 and was living at parkgate, frizington
would that be in the area of whitehaven, he was born 1854 and died aged 22.
i visited frizington 3 years ago but couldnt find a graveyard to see if his grave still existed.
kindest regards
michael

Although St. Paul's CofE is apparently used for things other than services (there's a cafe there for one thing), the graveyard is still in use. It's where I found the grave of my ggg grandfather.
The church is towards the bottom of the village, with the main entrance off Church St, though there is another way into the graveyard from Frizington Rd.

Andrew,
If you are still available to do look-ups in Whitehaven, would it be possible for you to check on the following person for me?
I'm looking for a Thomas Calder, born about 1795 in Whitehaven. He moved to Maine and New Brunswick, Canada at some point. He married Mary Pendleton on 22 February 1821 but I think that was in Canada. He was a boatbuilder in New Brunswick.
I don't know his parents' names, unfortunately. He was Protestant, I'm guessing probably Church of England back then.
Thanks so much!
Josephine

Andrew,
If you are still available for lookups, I was wondering if you could get any more marriage information on this Nesbitt line for me. Thank you!
Candice

It's a pity you didn't make this request a couple of weeks ago ... I was in Whitehaven last week and looked up the marriage of a Robert NESBITT at Whitehaven Holy Trinity in March 1833!
On my visit to Whitehaven last year, I met (quite by chance!) an internet contact from the US who was connected to the NESBITT family you are researching (John NESBITT born c1843 who married Agnes BELL - she was sister to an ancestor of mine). I expect she will have looked at the marriage.
I have sent a PM with contact details.
-
Geoff,
Thanks for the reply! I met you in Whitehaven when I was with my Mom (Pat). At the time we were not sure that this was our line, but since figured it out. We did have the date but didn't get a copy of it to see if there would be any more information on it.
I live in Southern UK now but won't be able to get up to Whitehaven right now to get it.
How are you doing on your/our Bell line?
Thanks,
Candice

Candice
I've PM'd my e-mail address to you. You can access your messages via a link at the top of the Cumberland Forum.

Andrew.
Can I take advantage of your offer---if it still stands--please?
Do you have access to Parish Registers for Whithaven? If so, would you mind looking for a Francis Woosnam b about 1808 to Richard and Ann. I have spent the last 3 years looking for him in Montgomeryshire and have come up with nowt! Someone has now suggested that his father might have been in Cumbria in the Army and he might have been registered or baptised there.
Thank you in advance---I am at my wits end now, and am clutching at straws.
Yours.
Ann.

I am researching the Cannell family from White haven. Joanna Cannell born 1857 approx her father was William Cannell a Saddler. If you have any info on this family I would be very pleased

I expect your one off offer has long since expired, but if you ever do get a chance, I'm looking for a marriage between James Wood and Mary Ramsey of Whitehaven around 1820. There is nothing on the IGI, but I think there are some gaps in the records there. He was a mariner. They subsequently moved to Liverpool, but their first 2 daughters were born in Whitehaven, Jane & Elizabeth. All her sisters seem to have been married in Whitehaven, sister Jane married Matthias Spedding and Sister Rebecca married wilson Pearons, but no sign of Mary's marriage.
-
:) Hi
Well if your offer still stands and you ever get the time, I would really appreciate a look-up for my grandad and his family. Grandad is William Moreland, born 1873, Whitehaven.
I would really like to know his dob/address/anything else! The family came from Ireland (don't know what part). William's father was called John, his mother Mary and I think he had an older brother called John.
I would be extremely chuffed if you can find out anything.

Hi Anne
I found a Wm Moreland living at 13 Todhunters Building in Whitehaven on the 1881 census.
Joseph Moreland b 1851 Ireland Labourer at Iron Works
Mary Moreland b 1854 Ireland
Wm Moreland b 1873 Ireland
Joseph Moreland b 1874 Ireland
Mary Amy Moreland b 1876 Whitehaven
Wm McKee b 1831 Ireland Iron Furness Labourer (Father-in-law)
I haven't looked at the other years yet, but does this seem like your family?
Rosemary

Hi Subaru,
Sorry for butting in Anne :( , but I couldn't pass up the chance to ask Subaru for a lookup if possible.
If you get the time, do you have anything in the Whitehaven OPR's or 1841 Census for Joseph Benjamin Hankinson, b 1816 Macclesfield, Cheshire, or his eldest child Martha was born in Whitehaven, Sep Qtr 1844?
On 1851 he is listed as an Inland Revenue Officer in Shropshire, having worked his way from Cheshire to W'haven, then Caputh, Perth in Scotland.
Do you know whether there would have been a need for Revenue or Customs Officers in Whitehaven at that time?
I would be very grateful for any info you can provide, as these rellies are quite unusual amongst my ancestors, most of whom stayed where they were born!
Many thanks,
Pixie

JBH seems to have married in Manchester in 1840 - 17 May to Ann BURTON ... the son's middle name in 1851 suggests this was correct.
Perhaps this was him in 1841
Salford
Joseph HANKINSON 25 Tobbacconist (NOT Lancs
Ann 20 (NOT Lancs
Elizabeth 60 (NOT Lancs
(I realise his mother ought to have been called Martha)
-
Hi Pixie
Geoff beat me to it. Although could Martha have been his wife's mother's name maybe? Maybe he was employed to work on the harbour as customs officer. There were plenty of ships around in those days that they may have had customs officers. Our Inland Revenue office is actually on the harbour, having moved from it's previous building (also on the harbour).
Good luck with your search. I'll have another look tomorrow, I've just come back from our Maritime celebrations on the harbour, so I'm very tired - fireworks etc.
Regards
Rosemary
-
I told you I was tired, I just noticed Elizabeth was a 'Hankinson' so it would definitely have been Joseph's mother, or maybe an aunt, you never know!!
-
Hi Rosemary,
Many thanks for your reply, and what a coincidence, you attending the harbour celebrations tonight!! I hope you enjoyed yourself!!And interesting that the Revenue buildings are situated there, in view of JBH's profession.
Joseph's mother was Martha Clark Hankinson and his father, another Joseph, both born in Bowdon,Cheshire. I have the 1841 entry you mentioned, but no-one is any the wiser as to Elizabeth's relationship to Joseph jnr, as I can't identify his father's siblings or parents.
If you come up with anything else on the family, or any info on harbour activities, Customs, smuggling!! etc., I'd be very grateful!!
Once again, many thanks,
Pixie

Hi Rosemary :)
Thank you for your help and efforts, but the Moreland family above is not mine. What a coincidence though that there is a William born the same year as mine. His brother John was a few years older than William, born about 1871, I guess. I think John was also born in Whitehaven His mother's maiden name is Mary Cunningham, and his father's first name is John.
I'd appreciate your help with any other findings on my family.
Many thanks
Anne

Hi Anne
Sorry I couldn't be more help. I had another look tonight - without success. I can't find a marriage for John and Mary either, do you have their marriage certificate? Do you know if they stayed in Whitehaven, or moved on somewhere? I looked on the general search on ancestry, and couldn't find any Williams born in Whitehaven.
If there's anything else you can tell me about them, I'll look again for you

Try www.rumstory.co.uk for whitehavens murky past. At that time it was the biggest port in Britain and only overtaken by Liverpool when the slavetrade stopped.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for that link - I never realised that Whitehaven had such an interesting past!!
I'll have to go Googling to find out about the Customs aspect, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Rosemary
Thanks again for your efforts. I don't have a marriage certificate for John Moreland and Mary (nee Cunningham) but I do have John's death certificate which states: 'married to Mary Cunningham'
I also have an 1891 Census with the family living in New Monklands (Scotland). The 1891 Census has:
Where Born
John Moreland head Gen Labourer Ireland
Mary Do wife Do
John Do son (20)Brick Moulder England
William Do son (18) Do Do
James Do son (12) Scholar Lanark. N Monk
William was killed in WW1. I found out about William being born in Whitehaven when on a visit to his Regimental Museum in Glasgow. The Roll of Honour of the HLI had his place of birth as Whitehaven. I visited Whitehaven's Records office spending two days there, but found nothing as I only had his 'name' and 'Whitehaven' to go on. At that time I did not even know his parents name.
A few month's ago I visited Kew and found his pre-WW1 service record, which again states his place of birth and town as Whitehaven, but sadly no actual address there. I also found out from the same service record that he was a Roman Catholic. So I don't know if this latter information might be a new lead for me, but I don't have an address to know which parish the family resided at.
Hope this fresh information can be of some use to you Rosemary. Again, I much appreciate your help.
Anne :)
-
That is a curiosity as frebmd have no record of him either yet claim to have a 100% transcription for several years around the time of his birth. In fact the only Moreland listed for Whitehaven around that time is a Mary in 1873.
As they used to say on that program with Goldie Hawn "Verrry interesting"
bob
-
Hi Bob
Thanks for that check, even if it proved fruitless. It sure is a mystery if the freeBMD are claiming to hold 100% of the records.
Perhaps the parish registers will divulge something !!!
Still hopefull
Anne :(
-
It was still compulsary (compulsory? - sorry my spullchuck isn't working) to register the birth so should be there. I also checked for the whole of "Cumberland" as it was then but still nothing.
bob
-
Thanks Bob
I wonder where he is hiding eh! I'm sure he was proud of being a Cumbrian as his daughter often said her Dad was from Cumberland (but she never mentioned Whitehaven).
I used to imagine that he was from Moreland or West Moreland with his surname, only to find out otherwise of his Whitehaven birth in more recent times. ::)
So do you think the Whitehaven Records Office would have some info on him Bob?
-
I would doubt that the records office have more than the official records. If his dad came from Ireland have you tried the official Irish records website. I know there is a problem there as there was a huge fire at the official records office and loads were lost - bit like lots of WW! records being lost when Kew was hit during WW2.
St.Bergs is about the only catholic church I know in Whitehaven itself but St. Benedicts is in Moresby next door - Pixie may Know better.
If you put "whitehaven catholic churches" without the " in your search bar then a post comes up for the irish diaspora which might be of interest. Just south of whitehaven are cleator and cleator moor which were well known enclaves.
Happy hunting
bob
-
Hi Anne
Bob is right about St Beghs church being the catholic church in Whitehaven. St Benedicts is in Mirehouse, but wasn't there in those days. There is also St Marys on Kells, above Whitehaven, also wasn't there then. St Beghs is your best bet, but if you don't have a birth certificate to go on, and no definite date, it will be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
St Marys at Cleator is about ten minutes away, but it depends if he actually lived in Cleator or Egremont.
St Beghs only have a few records in the record office, their books haven't been transcribed yet.
I hope you find something. William sounds like my grandfather - very elusive - I haven't found anything about him, and I've been looking for 15 years!!!
Good luck
Rosemary
-
Thanks to you both Rosemary and Bob for your help :)
I have emailed St Beghs hoping they can help, so will get back to you and keep you informed if I hear anything from them.
At the guest house we stayed in at Whitehaven, the lady told us about Cleator Moor being of mainly Irish stock. We had a wander about the cemetery there and found no signs of relatives, also visited the main cemetery in Whitehaven and found nothing, so I guess they all moved to Scotland.
Like you Rosemary, I wonder if the elusive details of his birth will ever come to the fore!
Anne
-
Hi Anne
St Marys at Cleator don't have many old graves left. I was up there a few months ago with my mother-in-law, who could remember visiting her grandmother's grave just by the church, but it wasn't there. We visited the priest's house, who told us the map/plan of the graveyard had been destroyed in a fire a few years earlier, so they have no record of who is buried there, and whereabouts. He also said that some of the graves are under the wide tarmac path that goes around the side of it. There is also a newish porch on the side of the church. I wouldn't be surprised if there are also graves underneath there.
So your relations could be there, under the path, like ours. Also if they didn't have much money at the time, they may just have had a wooden cross, which could have rotted away with time. I was really upset that they were allowed to do that with the path, how dare they?
Good luck with St Beghs.
Best wishes
Rosemary

Hi Andrew
Good luck mate :)

It is good to see that the topics on this site stay open. I wish I had some new information to report back to you on my grandfather William Moreland, born Whitehaven in 1873. and killed at the Battle of Loos, serving with the 12th (Service Battalion) HLI, on 25th September, 1915. :o
I did email St Beghs church, supplying them with the information I knew, but I never even received an acknowledgement from them. So much for courtesy! ::)

Following the discussion Re: St Beghs with interest, I have in the past been in touch
with a lovely lady there that was so helpful, but I expect she is inundated with requests
of look-ups which she does in her own free time.
I would like to know if there are any plans to transcribe the records for this church?
I would gladly offer my services if I were not 100's of miles away, so totally reliant on
these records becomming available on-line.

... but the marriage is Mary S ... :-\ Are they the same person?
As we may be talking about someone who is alive, we need to be careful what we post.
Jumping back to the birth and ignoring the marriage is not the way I would do things.
-
No I wouldnt either Geoff,I would be buying her birth certificate after first researching the details from her marriage,if it was my own family research,so Alyson if you have any details you wish to share and the persons are deceased ,
-
Hi. Thank you.
That is what I have done. The only certificate i can find is the marriage which i have ordered so i can find the mother and then the birth.
Thank you-will start a new post as suggested.
-
Good luck with your certificate ,I hope it opens a whole new generation for you,and helps you knock down your brick wall,
-
Hi Thank you for your good wishes. Yes we will see what the certificate brings and work from that.
This is a new tree for me as I have been working on my other for 15 years now so one gets to know the territory,so this is unfamilar at the moment but very interesting.I am geting to know all about Whitehaven and all the terrible pit disasters too.
Thank you once again.

Hi there,
I am trying to do some research on the Pattinson family from Whitehaven. I have information that takes me back to 1801 John Pattinson who married Mary Lowthian. Are you able to find any information prior to this time? John and Mary went on to have children named John 1835-1903, Mary 1831, Elizabeth 1837 and Wilson 1841 - 1967. Hope this is helpful.
Thanks
