Hello all,
I wonder if any of you can help me please,
I have a May Alicia Brown born the 31st May 1894, born in India? The daughter of a William Henry
Brown Sergent major H. M. forces. ? In 1922 William H Brown is dead. William is my 2nd great uncle
born in 1868 Marylebone London.
How can I find out where in India May was born and who her mother might be, she grew up in
England and was never told who her mother was, which is so very strange. Just looking for ideas

Start with familysearch for possible baptism.
There there are overseas/ military bmds on FindMyPast.
How did she get to England?
Checked passenger lists etc?

Might also be worth a quick search on Families In British India Society?

We don't know how she came to England she was very small.
I am not on FindMyPast I am on ancestry but can't find him. There is a marriage in Brentford in 1890 but if he is a sergeant major I just imagine he married in India.

What was the source of such a precise date of birth?
Do you have her on any census in this country?

Where no actual evidence of an India connection seems to have been found?

I have may on the 1901 census with her grandmother and aunt, may is 7. it does say she was born in Marylebone but there is no birth for her. as I said she married in 1922. Her family are saying she was born in India this is why she went to live with her gran.
It was just to get ideas where I may find her
Thank you

My first thought on seeing her 1901 census entry was that she was quite possibly the illegitimate daughter of Alice Brown. That would explain some or all of the mystery surrounding her birth and her parentage.
