I am looking for any info re a "The China and Japan Office" in London, 1860's.
First and foremost, just looking for it's address. Plus any other info available.
It sounds like a government office to me.
It seems a very obscure item to track down, so would appreciate any suggestions on
where else I can obtain the info required. Any specialist libraries or archives to contact etc.
Thank you for any info/assistance offered,
Martin

Welcome to RootsChat.
It would help if you will say where you have got the term "China and Japan Office" from.

The British Library Collection Guide of the India Office Guide and Private Papers might be helpful. There is a section listed on China and another on Japan.

Hi Stan,
Thanks for your reply.
That's a good point. From the England & Wales Census 1861.

Hi Gibel,
Thanks for your suggestion. Good to know.
The BL may be the way to go. Once their London location is re-opened I will give them a visit in person.

1. Are there any directories or similar that I can search for "China and Japan Office, London",
circa 1860's?
2. How do I gain access to same?
3. Is there anyone who would be amenable to search any directories they may already have, for me?
Thanks for any help

From the England & Wales Census 1861.
Can you tell us what entry you are looking at in the 1861 census? My key word searches aren't finding "China and Japan Office".

If you give the name or other details such as the census reference we can see the census entry which may help.
