Title: Church records for Kildare
Post by: adamjack on Thursday 11 June 20 08:15 BST (UK)
Is it correct that the Irish Genealogy site only has church records for Dublin City, County Cork, County Kerry and County Carlow? If I want to search church records for County Kildare do I need to search on rootsireland.ie or, if I know which parish I want to search, on nli.ie/registers?
Many thanks.

Yes you are right.

Ancestry and Find My Past have indexes to Catholic records so you can try a search that way.

Thank you very much heywood. I have an Ancestry subscription and a free trial with findmypast at the moment but have not found what I am searching for on those sites, so I think I will pay for a day's subscription on rootsireland.ie in case it has church records that the other sites do not.

I can't get RootsIreland to open at the moment to post a link to the page but you can check what they have before you pay and than compare with NLI site or use Irish Ancestors.
Do you know which parish you need or are you doing an all over search of Kildare?

Hi Sinann, thank you for your message. My ancestor is supposed to have been born circa 1839-1843 in Rathangan, which I was told was part of Kildare parish before 1880. I have found a possible baptism for her in 1839 in Kildare parish with the parents address listed as Rathangan, so I was going to search for the parents marriage, which I could not find anywhere in County Kildare on Findmypast. Unfortunately there is no marriage record for my ancestor, and her death certificate does not list her parents names, and the only reason I know she is supposed to have been born in Rathangan is from her children's birth certificates. So I was going to do a county wide search for her possible parents marriage on RootsIreland. I haven't looked at Irish Ancestors before, does it have extensive church records for Kildare?

Sinann, by Irish Ancestors do you mean the site johngrenham.com? It looks like that takes you to findmypast.ie to view transcripts of baptisms etc. Does findmypast.ie have more Irish church records than findmypast.co.uk?

Yes, it tell you all available records for each parish and where they can be found.

1830s is early for Irish records.
I think you need to establish that the girl in the baptism you found didn't marry someone else to ensure she is yours.
Look for older siblings, if they exist it gives a better idea of when parents married.
Don't be surprised if there is no records of the marriage.

Thank you Sinann. I couldn't find any siblings for her on Findmypast.co.uk so it is proving rather difficult. I will keep trying.

Finally got RootsIreland to work
Using this page https://rootsireland.ie/kildare/online-sources.php
And comparing each parish with NLI site you can see if they have any records not available elsewhere.

Hi Sinann, thank you very much for that. It looks like the NLI and Rootsireland have the same coverage for Kildare and Rathangan parish, obviously it's just a lot quicker to search for transcribed records on Rootsireland than search through images of parish registers on the NLI site, but then there's the slight risk I suppose that a record may have been missed in the transcriptions on Rootsireland. And obviously the cost factor too with NLI being free. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated  :D
