Title: A 'MISSING' BOARD
Post by: zetlander on Monday 15 June 20 13:01 BST (UK)
I wonder if we could do with a board where we could list those who seem to have disappeared with out trace.

We would put brief details  --  their name - possible place/date of birth and the last sighting.

e.g.  JOHN DORRINGTON - Whittlesey - b.1852 - 1891 census.

What is wrong with just posting on the normal general boards, too many different boards just add to confusion

If you are looking for John Dorrington after 1891 isn't he in Yorkshire in 1901 or is that another John

Piece 4196  Folio 66 Page 35
John Dorrington   49 bn Whittlesea
Amy Dorrington   36
May Dorrington   11
Andalusia Dorrington   10
Clifford Dorrington   6
Magery Dorrington   4
Thomas P Dorrington   4

Hi,
Is that....Whittlesey Cambridgeshire also Whitteslea?
He was married to Amy and in 1901 he was still in Hunslet, Yorkshire.

I totally agree.  This is what many of the threads are concerned with, so why another board  ::)

Probably best not to carry on with this search as zetlander already has other topics on John Dorrington.  ;D

I think a review of which boards we have and which we don't might be useful. It amazes me that India, Ceylon, the West Indies and South American are clumped together with with the rest of the world under "Other Countries, but "Family Bibles" get a board all of its own.

The other thing is deciding just which board is best for a query. For sake of argument - A prominent known man, leaves a known large employer in the UK. Boards (with his wife and family) a known ship in a known port and sails to a known port in the US. He travels to Canada and settles in Ontario where he produces more children and grandchildren and dies 60 years later. If placed in Ontario, Canada, then the people who frequent the board dealing with his birth town will not see it.

Or should everything be posted in the common room and be left to the Mods to sort out?

Regards

Chas

But it will get picked up on Google  :)

You could have a 1939 Register board as well, but it would just create more boards to confuse people as this site is a big site.

Seems John Dorrington is found in 1901, so 10 years on from 1891 he is accounted for.

I think these  cross-board/unknown ones are usually placed in The Common Room.  If they later get identified with one county/area, the Mods tend to move them.

People post messages asking for help with tracing a family member and usually someone comes up with the answer.
With other queries no progress is made and those queries get lost.

If there was a MISSING BOARD then names followed by very brief details could be noted and anyone willing to have ago at finding the missing information could do so.
These missing people would not be abandoned.

There is no need for any extra boards as all subjects are covered for location and subject etc. If a query is not answered the poster can simply reply with an update and the topic comes to the top again. ;)

In which case the originator of the thread can make a renewed request more help if they wish.

Edit: sorry Sarah we must have posted virtually simultaneously as I didn't get a red notice  :-[

I there are "Scavenger Hunts" for everyone  to join in and help to find people....or just put it up with the "Brickwall" heading and the elusive relative's name.

"There is no need for any extra boards as all subjects are covered for location and subject etc."

But  please, please alphabetize the 'US Resources and Offers' board.  There is very helpful information in there but it's a hassle to find it.  It needs to be alphabetized by state so if you're looking for help with Delaware, you run just down the list of posts and all the Delaware resources are together.
