Title: BT email - anyone had to update settings?
Post by: Roobarb on Wednesday 17 June 20 17:32 BST (UK)
I've had BT email for many years, it originally used Yahoo then BT Yahoo. I've been receiving emails that said I would have to change my settings or I wouldn't be able to continue receiving emails. I didn't trust these so didn't follow the link provided but had a look separately. I didn't take any action because I was continuing to receive emails and am still doing so on my primary account but not on my secondary account. The info from BT provides 'simple' details as to how to make the necessary changes but I haven't a clue what it's on about (changing incoming and outgoing server details) and I can't find out by looking at the settings as it tells me to because the only settings within my email are for themes and other things related to the appearance of the page.

Does anyone have any experience of this before I have to resort to ringing BT?

I see they are busy advertising all singing all dancing auto connection between your pc, laptop, tablet, phablet and mobile phone for txting, email, phone calls, video calls and social media.  That's a major change of operation so I presume they need to dump their previous contractors.  Glad I left them yonks ago, good luck though, cheers, Ian

I've jus logged in to my hardly used account and there were no messages about updating settings. Also, OH uses them occasionally and he's not said anything and I'm sure that he would.

I think it could be dodgy, Roobarb.  Take care.

I'm with BT email - for yonks and haven't had to do anything yet. It's been a bit unreliable accessing it on the laptop logging in, but I also get them sent to my old iPad and that's been fine so far.

Thanks Gadget, I've had a good trawl around BT's own website, I don't think it's dodgy and the emails on my secondary account are not updating, just as they said.  :(

From what I've read they're rolling it out so eventually I won't be able to get emails on my primary account. I've used a different app on my phone since I got the phone, on my tablet I'm still using the old app, downloaded the new one tried signing in on that for my primary account but it said I couldn't use it yet. That would fit in with what they said about the rollout.

It sounds like a scam email to me, does it ask you to click a link it, if so hover over that link and my guess would be if you look at the address it wouldn't go to a BT website but somewhere else.

Yes it does but as I've said, I haven't clicked on it but looked separately at BT's website that gives details. There are also a number of emails on BT's forum asking if this is spam, there are plenty of replies to convince me it's not. And if it is spam, why then have I stopped receiving emails? I'm very careful and am pretty sure it's not spam, I was just looking for some help in finding the server settings.

BT have taken their email service back from Yahoo, this is the help page link they sent in their advice email to me: www.bt.com/emailchanges

Michael.

Added, if you are uneasy at clicking links you can type the address instead.

Thanks Michael but where do I find that? This is the problem I've been having, I've been going round in circles on their 'help' pages.

What program do you use to access your emails? I use the MS Outlook included in Office 2010 & the snip was from their account settings page.

On my laptop it's BT Yahoo, which is what I understand they won't let me use any more. It gives me access to my primary email (where I am still receiving messages) and my secondary email (where I'm not receiving any) from the same page. On my tablet it's the BT Yahoo app and on my phone it's the email app that belongs to the phone.

Do you use this page?  If so, you can just enter your other e-mail address.

Yes I do, I log in with my primary email address and the page then shows that and the secondary one. The emails are all there for the secondary one but they're not updating.

Re your secondary address (from the BT help page link)

Not everybody will see the changes at the same time and it will take a few months before all email users enjoy the same experience. And we may not update all your email addresses at the same time so some customers will temporarily lose the ability to switch between their email accounts when using webmail. This will be possible once all of your email addresses are updated. Once we've updated your email, you won't be able to go back to the old layout.

What you need to change
Firstly, you'll need to make sure you're using one of the following web browsers: Internet Explorer 11, Edge, Chrome 60+, Firefox 52+ or Safari 10+. If you're using an older browser, you'll need to update it.

Update your settings
You'll no longer be able to use login.yahoo.com to access your emails - so if you used this, we'll have asked you to change this in advance of updating your email.

Thanks Michael, I found that bit, my browser is up to date. This is going to sound crazy and it is - I access my emails by signing it to the page Gadget showed which has a bt.com/login address (not yahoo). When I've logged in the page heading is BT Yahoo! mail. I can access both the primary and secondary accounts from that page. I don't know if I can access the secondary account by logging in separately, I can't remember my password and I don't want to screw up my access to the main account. I wish they'd leave things alone, if it aint broke don't fix it!

I think the changes are more due to BT parting ways with Yahoo, so you should be seeing the new sign in email page:

Added: I use the same sign in page Gadget showed & you use - but once signed in I'm taken to the page shown.

New BT email sign in url:

I'm using that exact address but it still takes me to the page with the BT Yahoo mail heading. I suppose that's because the primary account (which is what I'm signing into) hasn't yet been changed. I've been thinking about it and it looks like the only alternative is to sign into the secondary account separately. I forgot the password when they gave me access to both accounts on the same page. If I can't remember the password I'll just have to risk going through the reset steps and hope it doesn't muck up the primary account. I just don't understand why they tell me in the help instructions that I'll have to change the incoming and outgoing server details and all this stuff about POP3. Sorry, I'm ranting now. Thank you for all your help.  :)

They stopped this half way through the migration and left some customers on the Yahoo administered platform.   Have they restarted this migration? I understood they'd abandoned it.

My wife and I were migrated right at the very beginning (around 2014) but my daughter and son in law are still on Yahoo.   I'll warn them to expect this.

I was migrated last week, out of the blue & much to my surprise, but I was fed-up with the intrusive ads Yahoo kept inserting so mainly use Office Outlook.

I got the emails about the migration back when it was originally started (2014 sounds right) but then nothing until like Michael J I was migrated last week with absolutely no prior notification.

One of my old Talk21 addresses is still on the Yahoo system though.

We were migrated a few weeks ago. The email address was shared by OH and me, and used primarily for emails to and from a society we are both on committee of. OH had it set up to forward a copy of all messages to his personal non BT email address. It now seems impossible to set it up to autoforward any more - but I suppose that's progress.

Auto forwarding is still supported.

1) Open auto-forward settings (Settings* > Mail > Auto-forward)
2) Enable auto-forward and enter forwarding email address(es) in the destination box
3) Click Save

* The main Settings option is on the menu by your email address, top right.

I just don't understand why they tell me in the help instructions that I'll have to change the incoming and outgoing server details and all this stuff about POP3.

Anyone using a desktop application or phone app (ie not BT's website) to read and manage their emails may have the old SMTP settings stored in the application. As the SMTP server addresses have changed these people will need to change the settings or their application will no longer be able to send or receive emails.

BT's emails are generic and contain information that any of their users may need, so not all of it may apply to you. If you only use BT's website you won't need to change any settings.

Thank you very much. I would never have realised that unobtrusive little arrow meant settings. How clever of BT to use their own symbol and not the little cog wheel type thing that most other websites use.

Thanks for clarification cuffie81. I use the BT website on my laptop so am relieved to hear I don't have to mess about with the POP3 etc.
I still haven't managed to sign in to the secondary email, have tried several passwords that I thought might be the right ones but unfortunately none of them were. There is a Forgotten your login details? option but I have to access that via the MY BT section which is accessed via the primary account. I'm cautious about doing anything with that in case it mucks up my primary email.

Roobarb,

If you log in to My BT and go to Your Products > Email > Manage you'll see a list of your email accounts. Against each email address there should be a marker indicating whether it's Active, Suspended or some other status. There should also be options per email address. With a bit luck you'll have the option of resetting the password or re-activating it the account (if BT has suspended it).

I think this is the route I had to take recently to help my Mum re-activate one of her sub accounts. BT had suspended it for some unspecified 'security' reason.

The following links may be of some help.

Thank you again cuffie81. I got to the email addresses (a very convoluted route they send you on!) and it showed the one in question as being locked due to incorrect sign in attempts, or words to that effect. I was able to unlock it and was then given the option of changing my password but when I clicked on it it said it wasn't recognised! Aaarghh, I hate BT!!!

There was something about a 'favourite' account which I assume is the primary email but when I clicked on the help question of What is a favourite account? it just took me to the help page heading and when I entered that it the search box it didn't find anything! I've looked at the help pages you kindly supplied but haven't been able so far to find what I want.

I'm going to go and do something else now and hopefully calm down enough to look at it logically. Many thanks for your help.  :)

Has anyone had problems with distribution lists since the migration?

OH is a secretary of a local club and sends out newsletters to members from time to time. He has a group distribution list set up. BT has managed to delete a couple of members from the distribution list but not from his list of contacts fortunately, so he can restore them easily. Annoyingly anyone with AOL email address has their name replaced by "AOL", so if their actual email address does not contain their name, he cannot easily check it is going to the correct person.
But, more worryingly it has added one person to the distribution list whose email he did not recognise and is certainly not / never has been a club member. He googled this email address and found it belonged to a commercial organisation, which he may have had some kind of advertising email from in the past but certainly has never done business with. He always sends out the newsletters as blind copies for privacy and comply with GDPR, but is there a way someone can get around this and reveal all the recipient email addresses?
