Title: Mary Gordon Anderson missing in 1911
Post by: Liviani on Saturday 20 June 20 16:55 BST (UK)
Looking for some help in locating Mary Gordon Anderson in the 1911 census.
Also unsure if I have the right Mary in the 1901 census.

Here is what I have so far;

Mary Gordon Anderson is born 1871 in Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
Her parents are Francis Anderson and Ann Hutcheon.

Mary G. Anderson dies 1942 at Donview Road, Aberdeen. Usual residence, King Street, Aberdeen.
She never marries and is noted as being single on her DC.

I have her in the following census;

1881

50 Balmellie Street, Turriff.

Francis Anderson, widow, 51, Quarryman, born Gamrie, Banffshire
Francis Anderson, son, 20, Tailor, born Turriff
Robert Anderson, son, 14, Tinsmith, born Turriff
Barbara Anderson, daur, 18, born Turriff
Margaret Anderson, daur, 11, scholar, born Turriff
Mary G. Anderson, daur, 9, scholar, born Turriff
Isabella F. Anderson, daur, 5, born Turriff

1891

Queen Street, Woodside, Aberdeen

Head of household is a Robert Hall, 46, Chemist and Druggist with his family.
Mary Anderson, 19, domestic servant, born Turriff

1901

I think this is my Mary

3 Rubislaw Den North, Glenburnie Park, Aberdeen

Head of household is a William Mackinnon, stock broker, born Aberdeen
Mary (L?) Anderson, 30, cook domestic, born Turriff

She is indexed as Mary L Anderson here on SP. I don't think it is an "L" though. Will attach snip of census image. The "L" looks to be the same symbol as above for the "ditto"?

After this, I'm not sure where she would be in 1911.

Any help appreciated, although I know the name is quite common.

The 1911 census is only availably by purchasing credits from SP.  Nothing obvious using the free index

Checked some, most are married and/or born elsewhere.

She isn't;

In 1891/1901 she appears to a be a servant in households with a professional in it, rather than a more standard domestic servant on a farm. She possibly moved around to other households, but tracking her down with this name is difficult. I presumed she would've remained in the general area given she also died in Aberdeen City. Perhaps not and this may be another mystery.

This will be her as her U.R was noted as being 169 King Street, Aberdeen on her 1942 DC.

I checked the index and it has her marked as a "Mrs" however. Seems an error in the valuation roll though, as in the 1940 one she's a "Miss". Probably not worth looking for a possible marriage? Given informant on her 1942 D.C was her neice and had her as single.

ANDERSON
MARY G
MRS
Proprietor
HOUSE 169 KING STREET GREYFRIARS WARD

So, got some gaps between 1901 when she was last in Aberdeen and 1930 when she appears and remains at 169 King Street.

Thanks for this.

Forgot to add that her DC has her as "of independent means", probably earned enough throughout her domestic service life?

I think the Mary L Anderson you have in 1901 may be Mary Laing Anderson b. 1866, Turriff - it's actually quite difficult to see her age from the census return, but it could be 34 rather than 30.

Mary Laing Anderson also appears as a cook domestic in 1891, at 9 Rubislaw Terrace, Old Machar, in the household of David Littlejohn, Sheriff Clerk Advocate. Can't obviously see her in the 1911 index, but it looks like she may not have married either, and died in 1946 in Macduff.

That's absolutely brilliant Ruth. Thank you so much for finding all of this info.

I was working on the wrong Mary Anderson in 1901. You've cracked it.

Incidentally, none of Mary G Anderson's sisters appear to have married. Her sister, Isabella Fraser Anderson was unmarried on her death in 1957 and she was also a domestic servant. Working on the other sisters, but at present it looks fairly likey none of them married either.
