Title: Emma Smith born 1860 Bury St Edmunds
Post by: BernardOC on Sunday 21 June 20 21:50 BST (UK)
Emma Smith born in BSE, Suffolk 1860 per 1861 Census. Her father James Smith and mother Charlotte Smith. and still with her father 1871
In 1881 Census I believe Emma may have been working as a Servant in Helmswell, Suffolk.
Can this be checked please.
Also after 1881 I've lost any traces.
Would appreciate any assistance in tracking Emma after 1881

www.freebmd.org.uk to search for a marriage after 1881  but there are an awful lot of entries for that name just in Suffolk

The 1881 census and later ones are free to search on www.familysearch.org.  What kind of check are you asking for?

There is an Emma Smith b 1859 BSE working as a servant in Herringswell and an Emma E Smith b 1860 BSE  visiting relatives in Manchester

No way of knowing for sure if the Herringswell one is your Emma

Hi Carole,

With the surname Smith, it's like looking for hens teeth.
On Emma in Herringswell in 1881,I admit is just a long shot, no real evidence.
I've searched FreeBMD, Family Search and Find My Past with no luck. As you say there are many Emma Smiths.
I have posted this as Emma is the only one of James/Charlottes children I've drawn a blank on,  hence my putting on Rootschat.

It's a brave person researches the Smith name ;D

Thought I might look at it from another angle but it assumes she married & continued to live in Suffolk.  It also assumes she had no middle name.

The 1891 census has 11 entries for a married Emma b Bury St Edmunds 1860 +- 1yr

You could check freebmd for a marriage for Emma Smith to somebody of the married name from the census

I've checked 3 for you and no match -- Bayes, Rosier & Allen

Hi Carole.

Much crosschecking but have hit a brickwall.
FreeBMD has only one Emma Smith married in BSE between 1885-1901. (assuming Emma married in BSE.)
Unfortunately this Emma married John Gooch, confirmed in 1901 census, where she gives Badwell Ash as her birth place. Badwell Ash is within the BSE registration area. Also Family Search has a tree for John Gooch which rules my search Emma out.
It seems as Emma disappears after 1881 Herringswell.
Didn't find any connection for Emma Smith death in Suffolk between 1881-1911 in FreeBMD/Family Search.
Will have to put Emma on hold for now and look up other missing ancestors. Fortunately working back from my Mother (Margaret Smith), over the years I've succeeded in identifying many ancestors.
Now concentrating on other missing Smith links.

I can almost hear the enumerator being told Helmswell,
putting an 'H' where it is not needed  :D

Elmswell is in the Blackbourn Hundred and Deanery.
