Title: Leonard J PEARCE Reading Electoral Roll
Post by: Petros on Friday 26 June 20 09:04 BST (UK)
My grandfather lived in Reading after WWII but appears to only be listed in the 1965 Electoral Register.

Would SKS look up the address for me and whether he was living alone.

Many thanks

Hi
What address did you get when you looked him up?
7 Curling Way, Newbury?

Suspect the "J" maybe for Juror.

A middle initial of "C" suggests "Charles".
Would you confirm his death reference?

His death was registered at Reading Q3 1965 6a 92, registered as both James Leonard (as per birth certificate) and Leonard James

There are no electoral registers that actually give someone that matches that description as living in Reading itself but there are a couple that are in places covered by the Reading area.  Who are you expecting to find living with him.

As Ray has also mentioned Ancestry frequently add a 'J' as a middle name on their electoral register indexes and when you look at the original it is actually a J for Juror ie can be called for Jury service.

Have you looked at your local library web page as most are offering free access to Ancestry during this 'lockdown'

Rosie

The local library doesn't have a webpage.

My grandfather would have been too old for jury service, 82 in 1965. A second cousin recollected visiting him at a house someway out of Reading. And I have no idea who, if anyone, he was living with. The 1965 entry is the only possible entry that shows on Ancestry's index

Sorry I meant County Library or are you out of the UK.

Hi
Please confirm/deny the address quoted by me, or the one in your possession?

The lady living there appears still to be living in the same area NOW.

Who were his parents?
When did he marry?
Any known children?

Saves duplication of research by those willing to help . . . . .

Thanks Rosie. I was unaware of that.

Looking at the record, which Ray had identified, it is unlikely to be my grandfather. I have no evidence for a second marriage or of a connection to a Newbury address

You probably need the death certificate to confirm his address unless he died in hospital which may not help you much.

Hi
"unlikely to be my grandfather"        ?

You have info that would go some way for help us to help you.
eg "James Leonard" / "Leonard James"
eg  birth/death dates
What else?.
You have not been able to identify him/family.

Still willing to help should you take that step towards us.

Quite a lot of info re 1x family is available . . . . . . . .

There's another Leonard J. Pearce (not J for Juror) that comes up for 1965, but this address is also in Newbury.  Kingsley Close, with a female Pearce at the same address.

There are a number of places that might be referred to as "some way out of Reading", eg Earley, Shinfield, Spencers Wood, but nobody would describe Newbury in those terms.

I've found a possibility in the 1964 telephone directory.

L.J. Pearce, 213 Peppard Road, Emmer Green.

Just a couple of miles north of Reading.

I've found the address by browsing the 1965 electoral roll now, in Thames Ward 2.
Leonard James Pearce and Hilda Mary Pearce.  Nobody else shown at that address.

Thanks Sloegin, that Telephone Directory entry sounds most interesting now I shall have to wait and see what the death certificate reveals with respect to address and informant.

The burial noted by Rosie is his, he is buried in a family plot at Henley Road cemetery.

It does seem to tick all the boxes.
Does the other name fit in with what you know?

I've just checked Leonard's entry in the Berkshire Burial Index, and it says "Prospect Park Hospital", but perhaps the informant's details in the DC may be more helpful.

So @Petros , did you get the death certificate and did it confirm what we found?

I'm still waiting for it. Certificate delivery is rather slow at present
