I am looking for information/death/descendants of Charles White b 1828 in Dartmouth NS, Canada. Son of Michael White [1790 Co Kilkenny, Ireland - 1847 Halifax NS] & Mary Drea/Dray [born ? - 1838-44]. Charles was a brother to my g g grandmother Joanna [Anne] Holland née White [1833 - ?]. Eventually I am hoping to gain information about their mother Mary Drea/Dray.
1850 US census in Black Rock, NY
A Charles White labourer aged 19 born NS is with a Thomas Dray aged 30 b Ireland & family on : 1850; Census Place: Black Rock, Erie, New York; Roll: 500; Page: 253A and I feel confident that this is 'my' Charles. Thomas & his wife Catherine Mooney had children Edward, Daniel, Catherine, Thomas, William, Margaret, Johanna, James - all similar name to Mary Dray's children. I wondered if Mary & this Thomas were siblings or cousins? Mary died between 1838 [on Halifax census] & 1844 [Michael White's remarriage]. It looks as though Charles went to live with maternal uncle/cousin Thomas after his mother died/father remarried. Thomas & Catherine were married 17 May 1846 in New Brunswick, their first child was born there but subsequent children in USA.
Charles White married a Mary J Colman, had Alpheus C in 1870 among other children. [as stated on 1900 census.
1900 census Census Place: Hempstead, Nassau, New York; Page: 14; Enumeration District: 0700 aged 70 [transcribed on ancestry as 30], Mary aged 68, Agustus C [=Alpheus] aged 30, married 45 yrs 4 children 3 alive.
also states b Jul 1829 NY? [which is not right but transcribed as Nova Scotia on ancestry] father born in Ireland, mother Connecticut**, Mary aged 68 b NY parents born Germany, Agustus [Alpheus] aged 30 b NY parents NY mech engineer, Charles & Mary married 45 yrs 4 children 3 alive; boarding with Payne family.
I don't have any other records for Charles, either censuses or marriage. I wondered if any of their descendants might see this post & have delved further back for Charles' parents.
**So could Mary Dray have been born in Connecticut???
Thanks for any help.

Wow, thank you very much. I think I will construct a tree for this family then I can follow the lines you have shown me; then social media ......

Is there some information that indicates the son of Charles & Mary is Alpheus instead of Agustus?
-
Marriage of Alpheus Ewer White in Everett, Massachusetts in 1894 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N471-XY8 states parents as Charles White & Mary J Colman but, you're right, no proof it is the same Charles & Mary.
I have so far been unable to find a baptism of Alpheus or Agustus [or any of the 4 children stated in 1900].
ADDED:
Have found 1880 census http://www.rootschat.com/links/01pop/, Everett
Chas C White Self Male 48 Nova Scotia [both parents born NS] clerk in grocery store
Mary J White Wife Female 45 Maine, United States
Alpheus White Son Male 12 Maine, United States
and 1870 http://www.rootschat.com/links/01poq/ Vassalboro
Charles White Male 43 New Brunswick farmer
Mary J White Female 36 Maine
Lizzie Small Female 8 Maine
Alpheus E White Male 2 Maine
Baby White Male 1/12 Maine
The New Brunswick birthplace is a bit of a barrier....it would be helpful to find this Charles & Mary's marriage to see if parents are named.

Thanks, that Charles carpenter is definitely another candidate that I have attempted to follow in the past. Somewhere I found an 1889 record of being a war dept carpenter in Buffalo [which is where Thomas Dray lived] will try to find it again. l also found a Charles White fisherman single drowned at sea in 1904.
-
Interesting that ALL the young men with Benjamin Choate in 1855 are carpenters born Nova Scotia....
I found the 1889 reference I mentioned. On Ancestry U.S., Register of Civil, Military, and Naval Service, 1863-1959 War Department; Engineer Dept at large; Charles White carpenter Born Nova Scotia appointed in New York employed in Buffalo NY.
I think this carpenter Charles White is more likely to be the one I am looking for rather than Charles, clerk, who married Mary J Colman - I probably have led people astray there sorry :-[. A marriage with parents named would help....Charles' father Michael was a labourer on the Shubenacadie Canal.
ADDED: What do you think of these?
1860 Census Place: Buffalo Ward 1, Erie, New York; Page: 58;

If you don't have this marriage, do you have other information aside from Alpheus' birth record that your Charles White married a Mary Colman?
Alpheus White seems to be with wife Catherine & daughter Muriel in Everett, Mass. in the 1900 census, so he's probably not the Agustus in the 1900 census above.
-
I agree shellyesq, there was no proof of a connection between the Charles in the 1850 census & the Charles that married Mary Colman. I have jumped to too many conclusions, sorry :-[.
I am following Charles the carpenter now, hoping to find his marriage with hopefully a named father. Still in the ''possible' category. We have him in 1860, 1875 & 1889 all in Buffalo. I do however feel that the 1850 census Charles is my man, just need to connect him with a Charles later in time.
