Title: Britol General Hospital - Guinea Road
Post by: PaulJC on Sunday 05 July 20 17:15 BST (UK)
Hi All,

The 1911 census indicates that a Dora Lund was working as a nurse at the Bristol General Hospital. Would anyone have any further information about this person. She would have been about 23 then and I wonder if she trained there and how long she stayed.

I guess there are records held locally?

Comberton,

Many thanks,. I already had that information.

I would like to try and find out something about here time in England before the trip to China. There is a suggestion of an MBE but I cannot trace any record. Also a story that she was a matron at Guys Hospital in London in the late 1920's. If that's correct she must have returned from China but again, I cannot find any evidence.

Girl Guide......thanks.

I was aware of this BUT................I would like to find the London Gazette or some other official record of the MBE and, as yet, cannot find any.

I found her name here

LUND, Dora, Nursing Sister, QARNNSR, RRC [31099]

from https://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyBritishLG-Royal_Navy_Medals-Index2.htm

About a couple of inches down from the top of the page in a long list of names in alphabetical order

I can't see when she received it.  The MBE medal was dated 1917 so she may have received it then.

Link to her name mentioned in the London Gazette but not for the MBE

Bottom right hand side.

Still trying to find the MBE one.

The link in reply 10 is for the same award as shown in reply 11. Hope that makes sense.
31099 after her name leads to the edition of the Gazette with the Royal Red Cross award.

Thanks,

I have seen the entries for the ARRC award.
The MBE is eluding me. Assuming the auction house read the hallmark correctly as 1917 that would generally mean the award was given no more than a few years on from that date. I have checked the Handbook of the British Empire with all entries until 1921 and there is no sign. The LG database is not 100% correct but this is my first failure to locate.

I am baffled by the fact that I keep seeing the Red Cross award but can't see her listed under the heading of an MBE award.

Was the Red Cross one her MBE?  Not well up on how these awards are done when it comes to military and nursing.

As the medal was dated 1917 I assumed she had received it either on or after that date.

If she got an MBE it would have been in the London Gazette. They posted civil and military.
We only have the families recollection for this and stories get blurred Perhaps they knew she got an award but mixed it up with the ARRC. But where does the MBE that sold come into all of this? Its of the right era as she was nursing in WW1 and afterwards. It was unlikely just to be found in the house.

Its an interesting one with a number of different possibilities.

You could consider contacting the auction house and ask them if it was a family member who put the medal up for auction.  I was trying to find out when she died but wasn't getting anywhere.

I have emailed the auction house and, as I expected, they will not release any details. Thats standard practice but it was a family member who sold the MBE.

I also tried to find a death record. Of course, she could have married and be there under a different name but I have a feeling she didn't. She left England in 1919 for Hong Kong and perhaps never returned but that means the bit about Guys Hospital in the late 1920s is also wrong........

Thought about trying staff records for Guy's?

Link to the Nat. Arch. which shows you where they can be found.

Thanks,

That's my next move. I understand that there are RCN records as well. Might answer the question about where she was in the 1920s.

Still not sure about the MBE. I have researched quite a few honours winners and always found the official entry. If not the London Gazette, then some other notice.

The person lives in Utah and you can send a message if you click on the name.  Updated in June 2020.

Firstly my interest. Dora Lund was married to John Muir Bathgate, he was a brother to Richard Ged Muir Bathgate. RGMB is my maternal Grandfather. Dorothy/Dora was born on the 20th April 1887 at Holme, Westmoreland, married JMB on the 7th June 1920 in Hongkong, she died on the 23rd May 1956 at Gullane, East Lothian. They had no children. Have yet to find the death date for JMB but it was after DB. The announcement from The Straits Times 7 June 1920 "The marriage is announced in Hongkong of Mr. John Muir Bathgate, planter, of Batu Tiga, Selangor, and Miss Dora Lund nursing sister in the Government Civil Hospital, Hongkong." Interestingly or strangely on DB's death cert JMB's middle name has changed to McNeil, why?

For what it is worth someone on a family search tree has a death year of about 1960 for John.  There is a death registered:-

Deaths Sep 1960
BATHGATE    John    80    Southampton    6b   553

This gives a birth year of 1880 so near enough.

There is a probate record for a John Bathgate:-

BATHGATE John of 18 Hawkeswood Road Bitterne Manor Southampton died 9 August 1960 at Royal South Hants Hospital Southampton.  Probate Winchester 20 September to William Kenneth Bathgate wholesale buyer.  Effects £2653 10s 11d.

Does the name Willliam mean anything to you?

Thanks for the replies. I had forgotten about this thread.

Over the past 12 months I had unearthed the marriage in Hong Kong and the death in Scotland. Funnily enough, one or two of the questions that prompted me to post still have not been resolved, namely:
1. The elusive MBE record. I now believe that Dora did not receive such an award and that it became part of a family tale. There is just nothing to substantiate this claim.
2. The story that she nursed the King at Guys Hospital in the 1930s. Again, there is no evidence to support this but I will continue to delve now that things are opening up again.
