Title: GRO During Lockdown - Delay
Post by: Tsu on Monday 06 July 20 10:12 BST (UK)
Sorry if this has been asked recently.

I ordered three full certificates on June 25th.  One birth, one marriage and one death.
The estimated despatch date for all three was July 1st.  The marriage certificate was despatched on July 1st and I have received it.  The birth and the death are still showing as 'in progress - despatch estimate July 1st'

I appreciate that there might be a delay during the lockdown but how long should I leave it before I contact them?

Has anyone else experience a week's delay?  Is is odd that the marriage came on time and the others (ordered at the same time) didn't?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Ah, sorry.  I couldn't work out how to sort the search results by most recent.  Many thanks.

The GRO website does advise that there could be a delay

Due to Covid-19, certificate orders will not be completed within the published timescales

Yes, I know but what threw me was three orders at the same time, the middle one sent right on the nose and the other two still processing a full week later.
If they had all been delayed, I probably wouldn't have wondered.

They would all be dealt with by different 'departments.'  I suppose it depends on what demand each has for certificates with its limited staff.

It is a bit strange, I ordered 3 marriage certificates, one arrived about a month ago, others still not arrived.

Much the same experience by me.
3 certificates ordered on June 7th and nothing through my letterbox so far.
The usual non committal "we're buy" replies to my emails.

Hopefully, things should start moving once they get people off furlough and back to work.

I am having the same experience, ordered marriage, birth and death certificates on 29 June, so far only marriage and 1 death certificate (out of 5 ordered) delivered, obviously different departments, but I have noticed that previously when ordering certificates, marriage ones are delivered first. Time will tell when we receive our orders!

Hurray my certificate has arrived  :D

This is just for info for, NOT a criticism of the GRO, just to give those still waiting a time check.

Most of my research has been in Scotland so not used the GRO much, I was anxious I had not completed the request correctly.

I ordered a 1930s marriage certificate on the 14th May and it came today 18th July, 9 weeks.

Hang on in there if you are still waiting, they are doing their best.

I ordered a PDF death cert (1875) on 7th July and it arrived on 16th July so perhaps things are slowly getting back to the usual level of service.

I have had a similar experience. I ordered two death certificates and one marriage. The marriage certificate arrived about one week after I ordered the three certificates on 20 June. The death certificates have not arrived, but, as previously mentioned, there will be different departments.....
I guess the department that manages deaths is much more busy!!

I ordered three (one of each) on June 25. The marriage arrived July 3. The birth and death haven't been despatched yet.

Is there a difference in time between PDF birth and death certs and the paper ones?
OH has only ordered PDF death ones since lockdown. First two ordered just as lockdown started took around a week. Four received on 7th July took about two weeks. Have ordered another batch on 7th July, not arrived yet, but wouldn't have expected them until middle of next week at the earliest.

The first two may have already been scanned for another customer. An online tree by a distant cousin has death details for the individuals so I expect she sent for the same certificates some time ago. The four we received on the 7th were much more specific for OH's branch of his tree. With the paucity of descendants on that line, only two other people would be likely to have an interest in the same certificates.
Does anyone know if a specific cert has been previously scanned for a customer, other customers ordering the same one would get their pdf quicker?

I always order PDF copies now, for family history they don't need to be certified copies.  They arrived as quickly as usual.

I think there is a problem with GRO anyway, apparently there are 1000s of births that haven't been registered since lockdown.  The registrar offices closed and are only just opening but appts. have to be made and they are starting to register the babies born last March.  So my g.grandson born late on Wednesday night, may not have his birth registered for some time.

The person who's tree I'm doing wants full certificates unfortunately.
The marriage certificate department us obviously less busy than the office that processes births and deaths. The marriage certificate arrived exactly on schedule on July 1st.

You would think that they would want a copy from the actual Marriage register with original signatures rather than a GRO copy be it paper or PDF.  :)

The one they sent did have the original signatures as I recall.

Actually, I think it's a written copy of an entry.

Do you have to apply to the local register office for a copy of the original?

You may be interested in this post about a marriage cert from the GRO which differs from the PR entry
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=835201.

It is probably best to check with the register office as sometimes the marriage copy is a transcription done by them.

Thank you, I'll have a look.

I'm just sweating on the mother's name as my man was illegitimate.

Just looked at the status of my order, apparently the remaining certificates were despatched 1 August!
Looks as though processing orders is catching up!

My outstanding birth and death were despatched on July 31. The death arrived yesterday, the birth hasn't yet.

Guess which one I'm sweating on?  ;D

Yes same for me.  2 death certificates ordered last Thursday 6th, one before the 4pm deadline and one after.

Both received at 9.30 am this morning Tuesday 11th and that's with the weekend in between.

Very good service.

I ordered a PDF death cert at 14:59 on Sunday 11th and it came at 9:50 this morning (Tuesday 13th). That's quicker than I've ever had one pre-lockdown. I was thinking I would be lucky to get it before Friday. Excellent service

Excellent service received by me too.

PDF death cert ordered Friday 9th Oct at 15.45 - email at 10.52 Monday 12th Oct telling me it was ready to view and download.

Bonus it was the man I expected and confirmed a little theory I'd been working on.

A very happy bunny!  ;D

Well I can beat that, I ordered a PDF birth for 1869 yesterday at 13.45 and I had a email today at 15.14 to tell me it is ready so that's just over 25  hours.

But I ordered mine on a Sunday afternoon, so wouldn't start being processed till Monday morning (say 9.00 am), so in terms of Working hours, I may just have nosed ahead  ;D

I’ll share it with you, Lizzie - either way just over 24 hours is pretty impressive. Estimated despatch for me was Friday, so it was 3 days early.

Ordered a death certificate mid afternoon 5 October 2020, despatched by GRO on 9 October received by me 10 October. Not bad for electronic order and snail mail delivery.

I haven't had any problems, PDFs delivered within a couple of days and even received a marriage certificate less than a week after I ordered it and that included New Years Day.
