Hi All,
Eliza Hitchcock was baptised 7 March 1841 somewhere in Essex to Henry Hitchcock and Martha Lawrence; familysearch has this indexed as Eliza Hicthcock while Ancestry has it indexed as Eliza Hidneack but neither shows the actual place in Essex.
Firstly, I would like to know where this baptism took place as I am trying to link this Eliza Hitchcock to the one who married Joseph Gillam at St Pancras 22 Dec 1867 giving her father as Henry deceased. She gives her place of birth in subsequent census as Braintree Essex. And she is buried 5 March 1906 at the age of 65.
And secondly, I would like to know anything that can be found about Henry and Martha as this is the only reference to them that I can find at present anywhere.
Many thanks, Mirl

GRO Index has the birth of Elizabeth Hitchcock registered in Braintree in Dec Q 1840, mmn Claydon.
That's the closest match I can find for Eliza Hitchcock in Essex in 1840-41.
From 1841. Possibly the daughter of John and Sarah of Great Saling, Braintree, so not yours

I have that too, but the parents there are John Hitchcock and Sarah Claydon.

Baptism was at Coggeshall, St Peter ad Vincula

Image says base born Eliza daughter of Henry Hitchcock and Martha Lawrence, Henry was a sawyer.

That is very helpful, thank you Jonw65. I will look at getting a download.
Coggeshall is in Braintree registration district; but then Great Coggeshall and Little Coggeshall are in Witham registration district.
Also very helpful, Kay99. I had a feeling the birth would be under Lawrence in either district so this 1841 census may just be the one.
GRO gives Eliza Elizabeth Lawrence 3/1841 Witham V12 p284 no mmn; so now a certificate to get.
Thanks to Amondg for the further info, this will help going forward and back.
And finally, good on Henry for acknowledging paternity so we could track him down.

I have spent the last four days on and off looking for Martha Lawrence, Henry Hitchcock and Eliza Lawrence/Hitchcock in 1851 and 1861 and cannot locate them.
I have also looked for possible marriages and the closest I can get is a Martha Lawrence marrying Henry Pickering in Witham 1842 and moving to Coventry, but there is no Eliza with them in 1851.
Happy to look at anything anyone can suggest.

The marriage in Witham in 1842 is to Henry Pickering but the couple in 1851 have the husband listed as George Pickering :-\ https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGZ2-ZKC
The couple who married in 1842 had one child that I can see but I can't see him post the birth reg :-\

George Pickering b 1843 wasn't with his parents in 1851 but this looks like a possible burial - so could he have been elsewhere with sister Eliza in 1851??

Hi Kay,
Yes, that is about as far as I got too, except that I think young George died in 1849 aged 6.
-
Oh dear :-\
You will probably already have have discounted this but in the 1851 ceneus I keep coming back to an Eliza Hitchcock age 9 b Rayne Essex who was living in the Braintree Workhouse with a Charlotte Hitchcock 49 also born Rayne
Kay
-
I have seen that before and discounted it but will need to have another look I think
-
Hopefully not relevant but there's a burial for:
Eliza Lawrence at Gt Coggeshall, age 1 - "brought from the Union"

Was that on 1 Apr 1842?

There are four Eliza Lawrence births registered in Witham between 1840 and 1843, namely; Eliza 9/1840, Eliza 3/1841, Eliza Elizabeth 6/1841 and Eliza Lavinia 6/1843
Three of them die in the same period Eliza 6/1841 age 0, Eliza 3/1842 age 1, Eliza Lavinia 12/1843 age 0. By my calculation they die in their order of birth, except for Eliza Elizabeth which is the one I think is my Eliza Hitchcock.
Apart from the baptism of Eliza Hitchcock with father Henry and mother Martha Lawrence in March 1841 and the marriage of Eliza Hitchcock with father Henry in December 1867 there doesn't appear to be anything else to connect father, mother and daughter.
-
I have spent a fair bit of time looking at this and am ready to accept that the Elizabeth Hitchcock born 25 Oct 1841 and baptised 13 Jan 1843 to Charlotte Hitchcock in Braintree is the right one.
The 1851 Census reference of them being in Braintree Workhouse is therefore correct.
I have a possible reference in 1861 Census at 6 Bowman Place Islington for an 18yo female born Braintree Essex. On ancestry it is indexed as Erian Hitchcock 1843 Bamtree Essex servant.
If some-one could look at that and give me their impression of the forename please.

It might well be Eliza :) It isn't well written

I think so too but I think I might browse through a few more pages of this person's handwriting to see how they write their "z" elsewhere.
