Title: Baptismal Query, Redford of Banbury.
Post by: Degsy on Wednesday 08 July 20 10:44 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,
I have a query, whilst re checking information I have I have come across a note on my records regarding my great grandfather and his siblings. My Great grandfather, Alfred Harry Redford was born in 1860 in Banbury and I gave a baptism record for hi  from 1 Sep 1860 St. MARY Banbury. His sister, Harriot Emna was born 1862 and I have a note next to her that she was baptised in 1870 together with her 5 siblings at Christ Church, Banbury. The parents names were William and Mary Redford (new Gibbs) , the other siblings were William b 1865, Ellen Elizabeth b1867, Alice b 1868 and Ann b 1869.
Is anyone able to confirm this for me as I cant seem to find Christ Church PR online.
Many thanks in advance for any info.

One of the children had Birmingham as a birth place on census - was that an error or could the baptisms have been there  :-\

Ellen E age 4 in 1871

I wonder if Ellen Elizabeth is an illegitimate child of one William & Mary's daughters

Thanks again for your reply, again I have that on my records, doubt that she could be child of one of William and Mary's daughters, Harriet was eldest daughter she would only have been 5 when Ellen was born, cant explain the Aston birth as all the others are in Banbury, it's the baptisms I am looking for.

It could be a child of Williams sister that they have 'adopted'.  There is an 18 year old Elizabeth Redford in Aston in 1871 - RG10/3157 f168 p35

Anyway as you mentioned it is the baptisms you are after.  I can't see Christ Church online but hopefully someone can find them for you

All six of the children are listed in the parish register, all baptised on same day.

Christ Church, South Banbury
22 April 1870

Alfred Harry (born 1860)
Harriet Emma (born 1862)
William (born 1864)
Ellen Elizabeth (born 1866)
Alice (born 1868)
Annie (born 1869)

Parents: William and Mary Redford; Pepper Alley; labourer

Register on Anc. and likely in the Oxfordshire FHS transcripts too.

Thank you very much, these are exactly the ancestors I have been looking for, what a result.
Wonder why Alfred Harry was baptised twice though as he was baptised at St. Mary, Banbury, 1 Sep 1860.
Once again thank you and thanks to everyone who has responded.

The children are indexed under the name Bedford, which might why you couldn't find them. It sometimes pays to simply browse the parish register images.

It might be that Alfred Henry was baptised very soon after birth in a private ceremony as he was considered at risk survival wise and was baptised again with his siblings when there could be a congregation to celebrate the baptisms.

Another alternative that I have come across in my ancestry is that the parents either had a falling out with the priest at the time or simply didn't like him so had the children 'done' when a new priest took over the parish.  In my ancestor's case the entry in the PRs for their eldest child was accompanied by a derogatory remark about the parents clearly showing issues.

Thanks for your input, I dont have Alfred Harry's birth certificate but on the 1861 Census taken 7 April he was said to be 8 months old do must have been baptised very soon after his birth.
On the other hand the couple had 6 siblings baptised together ranging from 8 years to less than a year old so who knows the true reasons.
