Extract from 1871 Census. 9 Gray St., Silvertown, ED 12A, W‘Ham
Michael Leonard 50 not at home b.UK; wife Ellen 48 b.Ireland; son John 19 b.CityofLondon; daughter Mary Ann 18 b.ditto; son Daniel 16 b.ditto.
Daniel Leonard, my ancestor, marries Maria Taylor next door at nr.8 and they have left an excellent record trail. On their Marriage Cert it states: “Father Michael Leonard, blacksmith”.
My instinct says that both parents are Irish but I cannot find any other record of Michael and Ellen Leonard or even their childrens’ births in English GRO index. Maria’s roots lay firmly in Cornwall but I would love to find some Irish ancestors. Some experienced help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for the replies. For days I just could not make any progress at all. I am gradually acquiring research skills but clearly I still have a long way to go.
