Hi,

My 4x great grandfather William Bell was a Copperas Maker. I can not find any good explanations of the role online. Can anybody help me to find out what they did?

Copperas is/was a pigment used in dyeing, tanning, and making ink. See

Copperas: A green, crystalline heptahydrate mineral of ferrous sulphate used in the manufacture of other iron salts for industrial purposes. Also known as green vitriol. Some Tin Plate Works had a plant to recover spent pickling acid and manufacture sulphuric acid by recycling the spent acid, with iron sulphate as a by-product.
