Hello everyone
So looking at DNA matches yesterday and come across someone who matched me 4th-6th cousin 48cm across 5 segments
couldnt figure where we were connected till i went through his people list and there i saw the heart stopper my mothers first husband ... now im blown away does this mean hes my father and not the man that brought me up
I then looked into his family tree and seen the whole said family name of Mums first husband ... im now at a loss of my next move
-
Your father ought to match with more than 48cm.
-
this person with DNA match said that his Grandmother and said fathers Mother were sisters
-
Have you double checked his tree?
-
Ive looked into this tree and all the research is correct , the only thing he dosent have is my mums details and the marriage between the said person and my mum , but have all of the said persons family , which i have emailed and awaiting return of email

Modified * may have misunderstood the question
The cm match sounds much further back ..
Maybe they or you missed a generation in their tree
My 37cm- 56 cm matches are 4th cousins or 3rd cousins once removed or second cousins twice removed
*Modified
Have you checked
shared matches of this shared match .?
Do they match other people on your mother's side ?

I have a DNA match at the same level which is 133cMs across 11 segments.

Can you link with dna results that have trees that include ancestors of the man you have always believed to be your father?
-
Hi,
I have a DNA match of the same cm, and it is connect to a sibling of my great-grandmother. So maybe go through your set of great-grandmothers siblings, and follow back down their marriages, and children they had down to the time this match was born.
Good luck !!

This is the first time Ive seen the mans name on ancestry other than on my try as first husband , never had hot matches for him either

I was referring to your Father, not your Mother’s first husband but the man that you always believed was your Father. Have you worked out who your highest dna matches belong to? If it’s to your Mother and your Father then logic says you are not the daughter of your mother’s first husband and the connection is further up your tree. If your parents and your mothers’s first husband were all from a small village or town than this would seem highly possible.

I really dont understand this DNA stuff , im sorry if im coming across dim . This out of all the people i have made contact with is the first person that i have found a name that i know . Yes they my Mum and first husband came from the same town , previous to my mum born my Grandparents came from Newcastle .
Im struggling terribly to understand anything at the moment as you can imagine this is abit of a shock that my DNA has turned up with first husband in the frame
-
It’s hard to get your head around and what you have found has obviously given you a big shock. However I think you need to look at your matches carefully before you jump to conclusions.
Have you built a tree?
What are the cM numbers for your top 6 matches and do they have associated trees?
Have you tested through ancestry?

I have a tree yes for both my mother and the person i know as my dad
the largest cm i have as a match is 220 he has no tree so frustrating
the others are 114 , 112 , 105 , 92 , 3 have no trees , ones unlinked and i have messaged the other 2 but no reply
yes my test was an ancestry one
-
That’s very frustrating. I would try messaging them all again and explain that you are a match and would it be possible to have the names of their grandparents or great grandparents if they know them so you can try and work out the relationship, you could also ask if they have a tree online somewhere else that you can view. You could also try uploading your DNA to myheritage and gedmatch and see if you get some hits that way.
Have you been able to establish the connection with any of your matches at all? If you have you could start grouping. Take the match you have worked out and label it say ‘descended from joe and Mary bloggs’ then put all the matches that are shared with this person into this group.
Are you using thrulines? This should be able to at least pull some of your Mums matches away and make things a bit clearer. I think it would be a good option for you as you are struggling with understanding how DNA works. If someone has a private tree thrulines will still pull the match from it.
-
There is no physical way i can contact this man the contact button is highlighted , it says he has no searchable tree .
i use myheritage and gedmatch ( i have 2 hits on gedmatch ) but again no contact
I didnt relise what grouping is but now you have explained it ill make a start on doing that , it will certainly help
Thankyou for being patient Meelystar

Something I learned recently that if you click on a profit with unlinked tree they will often have a public tree however small and you can see a few names . The tree is not linked to the DNA of person tested but is probably same family
Probably a lot for you to take in in one go .
Have you got anyone who can look at it with you and talk the results thru .
Those bigger matches are more important .!
-
No
-
Just ask when you need more help understanding something .
It's hard to get your head round at first . But you.ll get great advice on this forum.
If your tree is open other relatives can find you .
-
Chelle, hope you are ok.
I would start gradually picking your way through the DNA.
Have you done a surname search? Have a look at your Father’s surname and see what comes up when you type it in, also do the same with your Mother’s maiden name.
If you have any unusual surnames you could then look at plugging them in and seeing if you can work out the connections.
I wouldn’t assume anything yet, just keep calm and take your time with it.

Just to let you all know chelle has been following suggestions and grouping matches as suggested between her night shifts
We have exchanged pms
She sent this message which i.think she meant to post on the topic
" so sorry i have not replied sooner Im a night shift worker :
Thankyou to all that has given input to this post , a little bit of a shock for me , but you have given me some helpful guidence in how to look into my DNA and i really appreciate it "
