Title: Why register a birth in Canada?
Post by: Mancunian194 on Thursday 16 July 20 11:00 BST (UK)
Hi,

I have someone born in Leith, Scotland (supported by a birth registration) who subsequently moved to Canada, where the birth was registered, stating the birth was in Leith.

Why would you do that?

Regards

What year are we talking about?  It may have been done for school purposes or the parents were required to register the child for said child to be accepted by the Canadian authorities.

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything regarding that.

This is some of the requirements for modern schooling in Canada

Proof of age, usually in the form of a passport or birth certificate
Proof of your current address. This can include bank statements, utility bills, or housing agreements
Proof of legal guardianship, if the child is under the age of 18 and you are not their parent
Proof of immigration status, including a passport, birth certificate, permanent residence card, Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292), or Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
Their up-to-date immunization record.

You don't say how old the person is in your post so this is guesswork.

Sorry, I was a bit vague with the details!

Birth & registration in Leith - February 1894,

Registration in Newcastle, New Brunswick - May, 1895

Do you have any details of the New Brunswick registration?  Have you seen an image or just a record?

Are you willing to give us a name so that we can have a look?

The person in question was only 14 months old and presumably the parents had the Scottish certificate with them?

Can't attached image; must be too big.

The document is for a registration of births for 'Registration Division of Northumberland County', number 002407.
Child name: Isabella Jane (Dob: February 6th 1894)
Father: Thomas Dennis
Mother: Euphemia Taylor

No idea what documents they had with them!

There does not appear to be any birth registered according to Scotland's People website either as Dennis or Denis.  This may be why they were required to register her birth when they got to Canada.

Do you know when they went to Canada?  It may be that they left shortly after she was born and didn't get round to registering her birth in Leith.

The image is showing the Canadian birth registration details.

Hi,

Ancestry has the Scottish birth for Isabella
Dennis, Isabella Jane b. 6 Feb. 1894 Leith, parents Thomas Dennis and Euphemia Taylor

Hmm...not sure why Isabella's birth would have been registered in Canada.

I see sister Margaret was registered the same day. Many births in that time frame went unregistered, so perhaps it was just an over enthusiastic minister to bump up his registrations.

Whilst Ancestry says she was born Isabella Jane Dennis, there is no document to support this.
I have an image of Isabella's birth registration (Scotland's People 1894 Taylor, Isabella Jane 692/2 201, page 67 of 515) and it does not mention Dennis.

The background to this is complicated, to say the least.

Euphemia Taylor married John Waters in 1890. When Isabella was born, there was no father registered, just a comment that he had not made contact for 3 years, so Isabella was illegitimate. Isabella's surname was given as 'Taylor or Waters'.

There is no mention of Thomas Dennis at this point; he crops up in the Canadian registration. He may or may not be the father. I can't find any BMD reference to Thomas Dennis nor can I find out what happened to John Waters; you'd think he must have died before Isabella was born, or at least before Isabella was registered in Canada, unless Euphemia and Thomas were pretending to be married.

I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could unearth anything!

And back to my original question; why the registration in Canada?

I wonder if Isabella was registered in NB to give her the Dennis surname? As you mentioned, Thomas Dennis may or may not be her father but may have informally adopted her? I can't offhand think of anything else.
