Title: DVLA driving licence renewals for oldies
Post by: Gadget on Monday 20 July 20 08:40 BST (UK)
Is it true that there are major delays in the issuing of driving licences by DVLA. I've picked up a headline from the Mail  in a  newspaper review. I'm always  sceptical about their reporting  :-X
Husband's is due for renewal next month. Mine's due in February.

Thanks BB. Another of the Mail's little stories then.

I got mine back within a very few days. It was my first post 70 renewal, and I nearly missed it. I would have expected some sort of reminder?

This, from DVLA website:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/dvla-coronavirus-covid-19-update

The webpage says no online delays, but says this:-

"If you have sent in a paper application you do not need to contact us, but you will have to wait longer for a reply. There will be delays dealing with paper applications that are sent to our office in Swansea, and therefore need to be dealt with in person. This is because we have a reduced number of staff in our building to comply with social distancing requirements and to ensure staff safety. Thank you for your patience during this time."

I've been waiting almost 5 months for a record held by another Government Department database.

Unfortunately, it is not something already sent out.

They do when you are approaching 70 " The DVLA will send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday."  It isn't clear after that, perhaps that is one of the tests to see if you are still fit to drive! Mind you I think a lot of people under 70 don't realise that if you have a photocard licence it needs to be renewed every 10 years.

As someone who has gone through both the 70 and 73 barriers ( ;D) ~

I had a letter before my 70th birthday asking me to apply and a letter before the licence expired at 73.  I assume that I will have a letter early next year for the next one, otherwise I'll just complete the online form as before  :)

Add - I'm sure that they tell you that once you've applied online you are OK unless you have a medical prob.

OH has just turned 73 and did not get a reminder so don't bank on getting one.

They aren't sending reminders at the moment. Make sure you apply online before your licence actually runs out. If it has expired you can't use the online process, and will be well and truly stuck because of the huge backlog of post they have. I don't know if they are actually working through that yet.

I looked out OH's driving licence info this am when I realised he'd not had a letter. I was wondering what to get as a b-day pressie   ;D ;D ;D

I am nowhere near 70 but my photo-card licence was due to run out in August - I was a bit worried last month that it could take a while so I renewed it online and was prepared to wait - the new one arrived in just over 24 hours  :o

Apparently it had to be renewed to update the photo - the new photo is the one that is held by the passport office - it looks less like me than the old one did!

I wish driving licences didn't carry one's address - nothing else does. I don't carry mine with me for that reason. If, as happened to me once, a handbag is stolen, they have your address and your keys. I lost it on Victoria station, and for some reason I thought I might have had the licence with, so I was worried. (I realise opportunist thieves are really only after what is in the bag.)
They were great at the station - I was taken into an office and presented with a card with all the bank phone numbers on it!

He might object to that as it's free.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Address unchanged since last licence issued?

My OH was 70 in May, he received a renewal notice and sent off the completed form complete with a photo (neither of us have previously had a photocard), it is now 3 months and he is still waiting for his new licence and the return of documentation to prove who he is.

I'm 70 next month and haven't received a renewal notice, Last month I got an application form from the post office, sent it off with a photo, maybe by christmas I might have a new licence.

Managed on one occasion to get though to DVLA on the phone and was told that if your application isn't being processed by you birth date then you cannot continue to drive.

I seem to remember the DVLA stating that they will send a reminder where possible but

the onus is still on you to renew your documents.   So never wait for a reminder. They have

   got, a get out clause ;D ;D ;D

I think if you do it online you receive an immediate confirmation  that  they have received it and so you can continue to drive.

Our licences were the old pink paper ones so we had to supply a photo which you can't do online. I do know that our applications have reached Swansea as I paid for 1st class tracked and signed for postage

My OH's spplication had to done by post as well as he needed a photo and didn't have a passport.   His licence arrived after about a month and my online app arrived at the same time after a few days.   Neither of us had a reminder

He won't necessarily get one at 73.  It depends how soon after he had to renew it at 70, it would normally have needed renewing.  In my case, I only had 1 year to run when I had to renew at 70, so I then had to renew again another year later, talk about a way of getting money for the government!

Modified - I see from the DVLA website that renewals over 70 are free, but I'm sure I had to pay when I turned 70 and then again the following year when my driving licence would normally have run out.  Then again that was nearly 10 years ago, so maybe things have changed.

I have renewed my licence on line, and sent back my old one.  This was before this latest fiasco, so the new licence arrived very quickly.  However, I thought so long as you had applied for a new one (and had proof) you could carry on driving.

His paper licence was replaced by a photo licence when he reached 70 (no charge).  The new licence lasts for 3 years which ran out this month, he did not get a reminder for that one.

I already had a photo licence, had one for years.  If you move house and have to notify them of a new address you had to surrender your paper licence for a photo licence.  But I still had to renew it at 70.  I have no idea why.  Then I had to renew it again at 71 when it would have been due.

It's odd that driving licence renewals are not being sent out, both my son and I both got reminders about car tax last month.

The computer is probably on lockdown and not allowed to work from home. Seriously though there is no reason why the computer cannot send out reminders, my licence is due renewal next month and I have not had a reminder. At least I now know it will be automatically renewed for a further 7 months.

DVLA is currently receiving 250,000 paper applications a week but there are delays due to social distancing, their online service is working as normal and has processed 18 million online transactions since March according to a BBC Wales article.
