Hello,
I was hoping someone maybe able to help me with finding out more information about my 3X Great Grandfather :)
I am looking for information on Hugh Burns (B: ab 1845 Ireland). From the information I know so far, Hugh was born around 1845 in Ireland. At some point he travelled to Durham, UK and married a Catherine Connor (B: ab 1852 Durham). They had a son, Thomas Burns (B: 1880 Chester le Street and he married a Margaret Harrison). They then went on to have a son too called Hugh Burns (B: 1908 Lanchester and he married a Margaret Haggon). They then had a daughter, Rosaline Burns (B: 1945 lanchester and married a David Young). They then had a daughter called Clare Young who went on to have me and my younger brother.
I am guessing Hugh Burns is a common name in Ireland, but I am really struggling to find any further information about him and his family (his parents, siblings etc) and I was hoping some of you maybe able to help me??
Any information would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance :)

Marriage September 1871 Gateshead has Hugh Burns and Catherine Connor are on the same page. If that is your man, his father’s name would be on the marriage certificate.
Is this your family in 1881 - children born before the ones you mention and born Ireland :-\

Thanks everyone :)
As it happens the marriage certificate I ordered for Hugh and Catherine 3 months ago has just arrived this morning (very weird). The certificate states that Hugh's farther is called William Burns and I'm guessing he will most likely be from Ireland too??
On the census I have found, it states Hugh was born in Ireland, but as Hugh is a common name I am struggling to pin point exactly where in Ireland he and his family come from?
-
Well, that’s a start :)
-
Do the witness names help at all?P - or addresses?
Have you found the witnesses in 1871?
Was Hugh a Coal Miner when he married?

1891 Census in Wardley, Co. Durham has more children: Mary, Catherine, Jane, Thomas, William, Hugh, John, Samuel, Matthew, ranging in age from 16 to 11 months. All born in Heworth except John born in Newcastle. One more child added for the 1901 census -- Ellen, aged 9, along with a granddaughter, Cecilia Varkess, aged 3.
-
In the 1911 census, Samuel & Matthew are noted as nephews in the home of Peter Murray of Chester Le Street, who was born in Co. Armagh, aged 70. His wife is named Mary born Co. Durham, aged 70. The Murray connection may be worth following.

Good finds :)
1881 5101/127/32
New Eltringham, Northumberland
Peter Murray b 1841 Ireland
Mary A b 1852 Windy Nook, Durham
with several children
GRO has their mother as Burns. :-\

Maybe the family moved from Ireland to Co. Durham between Hugh's birth and Mary's (ie, 1845 - 1852) which would explain the difference in the place of birth.
Found this family in the 1851 English Census on Chester Le Street:
William Burns Head Male 40 Ireland County Down
Ann Burns Wife Female 40 Ireland County Down
Barnard Burns Son Male 17 Ireland County Down
Peter Burns Son Male 9 Ireland County Down
Mary Burns Daughter Female 12 Ireland County Down
Hugh Burns Son Male 7 Ireland County Down
Cathrine Burns Daughter Female 5 Ireland County Down

Looking good :)

There are these children baptised in Drumgooland Upper Parish
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0449
Mary 5th June 1839
Peter 12 July 1841
Hugh 7th July 1844
Catherine 21st September 1847
With parents William Burns and Ann/e Lavery - possibility?
-
You're one step ahead of me -- just found Hugh's baptism with Lavery as Ann's maiden name. Names all fit. Barnard may have a different mother, given the age gap.
-
Yes I thought so too.
I can’t find a Murray/Burns marriage though which might help
Perhaps the Burns/Connor marriage witnesses will be family :)
-
There is a possibility here
1871 Newcastle March quarter
Peter Murray and Mary Ann Byrne are on the same page.
-
William (Guillermas) Burns & Anne Lavery were married on August 19, 1827 in Drumgooland Parish; witnesses were Peter Lavery, Hugh Burns and Maria McMullan.

Bernard baptised October 8, 1831; another son Jacobus (likely James) baptised February 5, 1829. One of the sponsors for Jacobus was an Elizabeth Lavery (can't read the other one). Sponsors for Bernard were Hugh Burns and Maria Smith.

William baptised 17th August 1834
Sponsors John Burns and Catherine Lavery

Drumgooland Civil Parish

Sometimes, the townland is shown in baptism records, but I can’t see that he has done in the ones I have looked at.
As you can see from the John Gresham site, Burns is a popular name in the civil parish.
-
Married in Leitrim Catholic Church in 1827, so that should narrow down the townlands.

Leitrim townland
https://www.townlands.ie/down/iveagh-upper-lower-half/drumgooland/leitrim/
Marriages would usually take place in the bride’s parish church
The Tithe Applotments Books only start at M for Leitrim Townland (maybe earlier pages lost/destroyed)

There is a Hugh Burns in a neighbouring townland - Backaderry :-\

I know it is a bit late, but I have just read this and it is brilliant and given me a lot of information.
Thank you everyone....it means a lot :)
