Title: The Brown family
Post by: Helina on Wednesday 22 July 20 20:02 BST (UK)
George Henry Brown born 1869 Bristol Gloucestershire marries Annie Eliza Ridings in 1889. They had 5 children, on the 1911 census 1 child had died.

I have no information on the children after 1911 and I have a feeling they went to Canada, I have no access to the world wide on ancestry so hoping a rootschat member may have full subscription

Name of the children

George Henry born 1890
Reginald Percival born 1894
Cissy May born 1896
Percy Archibald born 1904

Any help would be appreciated

This should start you on your way...

Canada has the 1921 Census online and free here.

Hi,

I see from the 1911 census that the family are butchers.

Canadian WW1 records have a Reginald Percy Brown, born in Bristol on June 1 1894 ,mother Annie Brown and father G H Brown (who were living in England)....Reginald was living in Brampton Ontario, occupation butcher.  He signed up in Toronto, Ontario in 1916.  Here is his Attestation paper and military record (which you can download for free).

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=69955

It says he married Esther Caroline Gallop in Tiverton on Avon, Somerset in 1917.  Looks like he stayed in Britain after the war.

Reginald and Esther are in Somerset in 1939....I don't think I am allowed to post details, but the birthdate fits with the date in the Canadian military file.   Looks like they are with Esther Caroline's father.

Looking for children on the Free BMD - Brown, mother's maiden name Gallop in Somerset...

Frederick R G - 1918 in Bath
Joyce A - 1920 in Keynsham
N J*- 1927 in Bath  (*won't post full name - may be living.  You can see the full name on the FreeBMD site)

Familysearch has lots of free Canadian records....

There is a marriage for George Henry Brown to Elizabeth May Beament in Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario on Nov 4 1914.  The marriage was at St. George's Cathedral.  George says he is 25 and was born in Bristol.  His parents are George Henry Brown and Annie Richards.  One of the witnesses was Reginald P Brown.

You can see this record on familysearch.

I think I have found Cissie May....

She married Herbert Stanley Cowell in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire in 1916 (see FreeBMD).

Herbert Stanley Cowell died in WW1 - 27 May 1918.  Commonwealth War Graves Commission site says he is commemorated on the Soissons War Memorial in France

https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/725808/HERBERT%20STANLEY%20COWELL/

Cissie married again to Charles Leonard Hurd in Bath in 1922 (see FreeBMD)

Cissie and Charles Leonard Hurd had 3 children, in Headington Oxfordshire - (see FreeBMD - surname Hurd, mother's maiden name Brown)
Leonard Percy Hurd - 1923-1991
Phyllis Daphne Hurd - 1926-1998
G C Hurd - 1927

1939 - Cissie is a widow again - in Bath, Somerset.  Probably can't post details.

Looks like Charles Leonard Hurd died in Headington in 1927 (see Free BMD)

Cissie May Hurd died in Bath, Somerset in 1978. (FreeBMD)
