Title: Looking for Thomas Henry Lancelot LEWIS
Post by: Westby on Thursday 23 July 20 13:47 BST (UK)
I'm looking for Thomas Henry Lancelot LEWIS.  I have very little info and I'd appreciate anything anyone can offer.

Thomas Henry Lancelot LEWIS
B Abt 1870 (based on age at death)
D 4 August 1946, NSW
Lived in Kensington, NSW
M 1894 Letitia Stacia EVANS, Sydney, NSW
Children
Elsie Letitia LEWIS (1895-1975)
Sylvia Therese LEWIS (1897-1973)

I don't think he was born in Australia, but can't find an arrival that fits, and with such a common name, I can't identify a birth in the UK (possibly Wales).

Any suggestions for other avenues to search would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I can’t find them entering Australia - They arrived sometime between 1851 and 1859 - or the deaths of Benjamin and Jemima. In the 1889 article he is the ‘late Benjamin Whiffen’.

I think the great grandson was taking a guess at the year of the family's departure when he placed his  inquiry.

Thank you all for your wonderful detective work! A veritable goldmine of information that I have now entered into my tree, and managed to fill a few gaps.

Thanks so much for all the time and care you've given to this.  It is greatly appreciated.

If it's not pushing the friendship, could I ask again for your help to locate information about Edward Deacon WHIFFEN. He was a brother-in-law of the aforesaid Thomas Henry Lancelot LEWIS, and was  born in London (Middlesex) on 28 AUGUST 1835. I have him in the 1841 and 1851 census but can't find him after that.  I'm not sure if he came to Australia with the rest of the family in 1852. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Tks

Jamjar I have found Benjamin and Jemima. They arrived in Sydney on 24 December 1853, but sadly, Benjamin died of a stroke on 8 January 1853. Can you image being in Jemima's situation - in a strange land with 7 children! I don't know if they had any friends or family in Sydney, but I think the family went to Rockhampton. I'm not sure what might have attracted them to north Queensland or what they might have done there.

I've become quite fascinated by this family (no relation to me) so I'm still looking.

Hi Westby,

Reading through this thread with interest, and saw your question about Edward Deacon Whiffen b 1835, one of the 8 children of Jemima & Benjamin (as listed on the 1841/1851 Census).  This might be him - I note your Edward had a brother named George:

On 18 June 1894 Committed by Judge's Order of Alameda County Court  to Mendocino State Hospital
Edward Whiffen, age 58, single, native of England, Pile Driver.
Resident of California 43 years and prior to that, resident of England.
Committed by Judge's Order of Alexander County Court  to Mendocino State Hospital
Suffering Insomnia, Acute Mania
Never previously in an Asylum or has Insane relatives.
Classed as Destructive
Not classed as Sucidal, Homicidal, Incendiary, Filthy
Does not have Head Injury or Epilepsy
Moderate Alcohol, but no Narcotics
History:
Evidence of the presence of insanity. Waeks (sic) and talks most of the night. Thinks he hears and sees spirits.  Carries a pistol for self protection.  Chases people and threatens to kill them. Thinks he was born before Christ and that he will live to be one hundred and ninety years old.
Address: George Whiffen, Australia
             Condition on Admission
Died: 30 Dec 1897

I can't find any US Census record though....

Cheers

Wow, this is an amazing find Ambly. I don't have any access to US records on Ancestry or elsewhere, so I can't check any further, but it certainly looks like our man.  Any chance you could check immigration records for around 1851 to see if he appears?  I wonder why he was going to the US. Goldrush perhaps?

Thanks
