Title: Which Mrs Bower could this be, either Dumfries or Ayr
Post by: gingerbit on Friday 24 July 20 15:06 BST (UK)
If someone could put an approximate date on this photo it would help me decide whether this Mrs Bower is the Mother or Wife of Andrew Bower.
Photography by A McGregor of Kilmarnock.
Thanks.

I would suggest a date of 1920 give or take a year or two.

Odd - the photo is inscribed M McGregor and Sons   but the listing refers to Adam (snr and jnr) and James  :-\

PS - agree with Carol about the date.

It wasn't that unusual for old family businesses to keep the original name
particularly when it passes down the family.
Agree with the date.

It appears to me that the small c has faded, there is a small dot between the M & G.

I see that now - must have been the large gap that threw me.  :-[

Thank you for the help everyone. I should have asked for Mrs. B's age at the same time. Anyone got an idea ?  :) :)

Have I got the correct family in 1901, living at 8 Dunlop Street, Stewarton, Ayrshire?

If so, Andrew jnr's mother, Martha, was born circa 1853. Thus, this is probably Andrew's wife. However, Andrew's father is also and Andrew.

Andrew jnr is given as born circa 1887.

I'm now reconsidering!

If this was young Andrew's mother, she would be about 63. If she was young Andrew's wife, and she was about young Andrew's age, she would be about 34.

Add - Martha Bower, wife of Andrew Bower, snr, died in 1923 aged 70

Yes Gadget, You are exactly right. This is the family from Stewarton. How do you do that ? ?
Martha Bower,  wife of Andrew b.1853, died in 1923 so she would be in her late 60's or thereabouts when this photo was taken.
Andrew b. 1887 was not married at the time of his death at the end of WW1.
The photo confused me slightly as she looks so different from the earlier ones I have of the Bower family taken about 1890. Probably on this site somewhere for a tidy up.
 :) :)

I've just found Andrew, jnr's death record - Pte. 37084,  Scottish Rifles  9 Dec 1918. (CWGC gives Sophia)  The Cause of death is given as D.D.  Jim would know .

I used Census information and Scotland's People web site. I have Martha's death record, Scottish 1911 and the Scottish Rifles entry, if you'd like them, send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send them.

She looks a lot younger than late 60s.

It could be her- (add- eyes nose and mouth look similar but ears are lower)

(I've over enlarged the earlier 1890s one so it's a bit pixelated )

Faster on the draw than me, Gadget. I was hoping to see if there was any resemblance in the two faces. She does look good considering the tragedy of all her children gone before her.
Sending a pm, thanks for the offer.

Well no actually but he died in a CCS in Bulgaria post war so probably some form of dysentry.
