Hi all,
Trying to figure out what the cause of death was for my great grandfather's first wife Mary. I know she died in childbirth (sadly, so did the baby) but what does the cause of death say? 'Probably haemorrhage after .... confinent??' I can't make out the last word.

Sound like a post-partum haemorrhage. My daughter had one after the birth of her first child. She lost 3 pints of blood.

Oh, yes I understand that part. It's the word that looks like 'confinent' that I'm struggling with.

'Confinement' was the term for labour/ the process of giving birth.

There wa also no Mrdical attendant, now whether that was at the birth or at her death,not quite sure.
It is sadly possible she bled to death ,which would indicate all the afterbirth- placenta ,did not come away so all the blood vessels would not close off .
Birth is really a magical thing ,the baby becomes air breathing and the blood system changes ,and the mother’s body ejects- or should do -the placenta and the major blood vessels that have nourished the baby close off.
Occasionally that does not happen, there are seven things a midwife or Doctor must check for, any missing and there is still some placenta retained.
So action must be taken.But no medical attendant —— . Very sad.
