Title: Which William Puttock
Post by: MattD30 on Tuesday 28 July 20 13:36 BST (UK)
I am hoping someone here might be able to help me resolve a puzzle which I have been trying to unravel for several years regarding my ancestor William Puttock of Billingshurst, Sussex.

William died in January 1785 and was buried there on 26 January 1785. He had married a woman named Mary Greenfield in August 1756 in Billingshurst and she later died in 1773.

I had originally suspected that William was born c1732 in Billingshurst but this was only based on [1] info sent to me by another researcher, and [2] an online tree I was directed to which I can no longer find [I have an online tree myself which I now think is incorrect in regards to William's birthplace and parents].

Originally I had believed that William was born in Billingshurst in about 1732 and I was led to believe that his father's name was Samuel. Now research by me over the years has revealed that there was a Samuel Puttock having children christened in that parish during the 1730s and 1740s. So far I've found the following:

Martha Puttock 1737
Martha Puttock 1738
Pheobe Puttock 1743
Phillip Puttock 1741
Frances Puttock 1739
Mary Puttock 1736

But so far no sign of a William, nor a marriage for Samuel.

The only thing that made me think there might be a link here was the inclusion of the name Philip as that features in every generation from William downwards.

However I have now found two other possible candidates for my William and it would be helpful to know if others think one of these might be the one I should be researching.

First in Stopham there is a christening for a William Puttock son of Henry in June 1733.

Second in Wisborough Green there is a christening for a William Puttock son of Henry and Elizabeth in February 1736.

Both Stopham and Wisborough Green are close to Billingshurst so I think it highly possible that either of these could be the one who married Mary Greenfield.

Can anyone help here or pinpoint a christening for the mysterious William son of Samuel?

Many thanks
Matt
