I have the front of an envelope of a relative that was dated 1856. I am a bit confused why he might have been in Constantinople though I realize one of his children was actually born there. The family was from England.
I cannot make out all of the words. Thanks for helping

I agree, and add that Henry has "Esq. " - Esquire after his surname and the envelope was despatched 'via French Packets ' ... So by the sea mail process available in that era.

Thanks EVER so much for finding this for me. I wondered what drew him to this area. I do love all of you at rootschat. My grandfather never knew his mother because he died within a week of his birth. His grandfather, Henry Ernest Wylde died before he was born, and my grandfather died when I was quite young. So many questions unanswered. Many thanks for helping me!

Another quick question.
In this letter that my 2nd great grandfather received from his intended father-in-law was a type of letter letting him know that his proposal would probably not be accepted because his daughter had no intention of living abroad.
Naturally, I thought Henry wanted to marry Elizabeth and move to the United States.
Did he mean that she had no intention of living in Constantinople? That would not really mean "abroad" would it?

Others may think differently but I think Constantinople would be “Abroad”.
Even now my elderly relatives refer to anywhere outside the UK as “Abroad”.

Back in 1856 Constantinople would definitely have been considered 'abroad' if you lived in England!
It wasn't called Istanbul until 1930.
I remember visiting in the 1970s, and it was very much a far flung, exotic and distant place.

It was and still is 'abroad' ...
Abroad - as in across the seas .... or in a foreign country ....
Elizabeth was in Britain and Turkey has no shared border with Britain, so it was and still is 'abroad'.
