Title: Trying to find Marriage - Franks
Post by: PaulJC on Monday 03 August 20 23:05 BST (UK)

I have a Robert Franks, born July 31st 1915, I think in Worksop, Notts. I say think because he is the only person of that name with a birth registered in the third quarter of 1915.
It says mothers maiden name is Milner but I cannot find a Franks - Milner marriage record?
Thanks,
Paul

Possibly his mother was previously married

Milner marries Joe Bloggs
Joe Bloggs dies
Mrs Bloggs marries Mr Franks but baby Franks births will show her true maiden name Milner

Who does Robert name as his father on his marriage cert?

2 other Franks/Milner births - 1912 & 1919

Per GRO online - Martha Ann Franks b 1910 & Thomas Benjamin 1908.  Both in Worksop and both mmn Milner

Thanks,

It could be any of them.

Robert must have had a good education as he went to university between the wars and that was not so common. Taking that a bit further, perhaps his parents were more middle class than working class. I note Ambrose  Franks was a farm labourer so he would be unlikely.

Robert Franks b 31.7.1915 died 2000 in Essex.

There is a tree on Ancestry and it shows a marriage in Chelmsford in 1960 to Florence Barbara Gremila b 1923 died 1998.  It also has photos of them and other memorabilia.  He was born in Clowes Derbyshire and parents were (Abraham)EDIT - typo should be Ambrose &  Martha.  He worked for Marconi and received the MBE

Suggest you contact the tree owner if you have an interest in Robert

I cant find any marriage between an Abraham and a Martha (let alone one that would fit a birth in 1915).
Also, no Abraham Franks in the Derbyshire area.
Clowes doesnt show up in Derbyshire Google search.

I never did trust some of these family trees............!!

Its actually Clowne, a place near Chesterfield.

I have given you the link to the 1911 entry for (Abraham). EDIT - should be Ambrose & Martha.  I also gave you their marriage details in the same reply - see above reply #2

Clowne comes under the Worksop RD but was in Derbyshire

Thanks, BUT

Some of the information says Ambrose (e.g. your link) and the last post Abraham and Martha.

All the above is correct so are you saying it should read Ambrose, not Abraham?  If it is Ambrose, my only issue is that Robert went to grammar school and then university which would be a little unusual as the son of a farm labourer in the 1930s

Am I missing something?

The trees on Ancestry showing Robert Franks, born 31 July 1915 in Clowne, Derbyshire, and married to Florence Barbara Gremila in 1960, indicate that Robert's parents are AMBROSE Franks and Martha "Pat" Milner.

I am also confused by your assumption that a Farm Labourer's son would be unlikely to attend Grammar School and University.  There were, I understand, scholarships awarded by some Grammar Schools based on the results of the Entrance Examination  (Malton Grammar School reckoned about 25% of places were offered via scholarships in the 1930's).

Also from the M/C on FreeREG Marthas Father was a Farmer so he may have had a little money.

Assuming that the Grammar School is correct and that the supporting letter for Robert's employment by Marconi is for the same person, then it is more than feasible - the school is at Staveley, Chesterfield, and Robert is born at Clowne, Chesterfield = no more than 4 miles apart.

The "Franks Family Tree" on Ancestry appears to be well researched, and well documented = source of the support letter.
