Title: George Oram abt 1813
Post by: annie1515 on Monday 10 August 20 20:28 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm looking for the baptism of George Oram born circa 1813/1814 in Cuckfield or Lindfield (place of birth from census.)

I've looked on freereg.org and there's no George Oram baptised in Cuckfield, and the Genealogist supposedly has Lindfield parish registers but there's nothing coming up when I search for him.

Lots of trees on ancestry suggest his parents were Stephen Oram and Barbara Comber. On George's marriage certificate to Eliza Hill(s), he states that his father is Stephen.

I found Stephen dying in 1830 in Cuckfield, aged 41 and marrying Barbara in 1813. If anyone could help me locate George's actual baptism though, that would be great!

Thank you so much for looking for me.
I don't suppose there are any baptisms of a George Oram to a Stephen around 1813/1814/1815 etc in any neighbouring parishes on the Family History Group?

Interestingly, the death record I have for him states his birth year as 1820.

I should note that there is a baptism for a Barbara Ann Oram in 1815, Ardingly to Stephen and Barbara.

There is also the baptism of John Oram an adult son of Stephen and Barbara at Southwick 17th July 1853. May suggest no earlier baptism for him.

Thank you, I do.

All of this information was given to me by relatives, and everything seems mostly accurate, but I don't want to research the family too much if I can't confirm George is Stephen and Barbara's son.

However, I just relooked at the 1841 census and there is a George Oram living with a Barbara Braysher (Barbara remarried.)

However, it's strange I cannot find George and his wife Eliza together in 1841

The other children here include
Amelia b approx 1820
Eliza c. 1825
Naomi c.1825
Charity c.1830
John c.1833
and Leonard c.1837
and what looks like Orpha? c.1839

Barbara Braysher also has an Ellen Oram b. 1848 in London living with her on the 1851 census

Looking at 1841 Census I cant ffind Bapt for those Orams.

1851 Leonard is born c 1836 Keymer. (this is on F/S.Org, cant find on Anc.)

I found marriages for two of the daughters-

Amelia to Spencer Crouch in 1841, Keymer (seems to have gone to America, cannot find a death for her.)
Naomi to Edward Bates in 1842, Keymer
both list their father as Stephen Oram

I should note that the first 3 children of my George Oram and his wife Eliza were born in Keymer in the 1840s which suggests this could be the right George

George Oram married Eliza Hill in 1840 in Woodmancote (both of them are of the parish.)
Father Stephen, a labourer. Witnesses Michael Harmes and Elizabeth Benfield (of no relation to my knowledge to either George or Eliza.)  from freereg.org

Barbara seems to have married Samuel Brady also in 1840 but in Australia- however I cannot see any details with my membership on findmypast.

I have found an Orpha Crouch living with Amelia and Spencer Crouch- she seems to have married a Thomas Mudge in America, I just haven't found the marriage itself yet.

Hi again!

I was wondering if you knew whether the records you searched included Non-Conformist records and all of the neighbouring parishes or if they have not been digitised/transcribed yet?

I have been doing work into the Oram family and found some other Orams who were baptised Non-Conformist and am wondering if George and his siblings were also!
