Seeking please any information about the life and family of my great-uncle, Leonard George PATTERSON born at Epping, Essex in 1896. He was the son of a John William PATTERSON & Ruth HAMMOND.
In 1917 he was discharged from the army and was living at 33 Southampton Road, Reading.
Leonard died on 30th December, 1983 at Battle Hospital, Reading in Berkshire. His residence was at:
3 Derby Road, Caversham, Reading.
I am unaware of whether he married and welcome contact from any descendants or relatives in the UK. I live in Australia and descend from his half sister, Fanny Esther Patterson nee Cowan.
Hoping to hear from someone who can assist my quest. Thanking you. regards, Rob

Hi Ray, yes Fanny Esther married a Henry (called Harry) Richardson COWAN in 1896. I descend from that marriage through their daughter Edith May. Regards, Rob

Leonard did not leave a will so nothing to help with any possible mention of relatives. His estate was valued at £161063.
He is still a single man in the 1939 Register. I assume the lady with him is his sister, also single.

Thanks Girl Guide
Very interesting...whuch register did his name appear in 1939? Is there a lady mentioned with him?
How can I check probate details in England? I live in Australia but I imagine these can be accessed on line?
Thanks for this detail..perhaps he did remain single for life..
Cheers
Rob

I'll send you the 1939 register details via private message as we are not allowed to give details on the public forum.
When you see the word Adminstration on the Probate records that means no will was made and therefore the information is unlikely to be of any help. You can purchase it from the website for £1.50. You will get it as a pdf although it will take some time. Not sure how payment would work as you live in Australia. The website is:-
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
Please note that there are two lots of dates and it automatically defaults to the newer dates so you need to click on the 1858 - 1996 tab. Then just enter surname and 1984 as he died right at the end of 1983 so details appear on the following year.

Sent you a message as promised.

Thanks again Girl Guide. I could not see the reference to a lady living with John?
Is there a similar index for searching Probate records prior to 1858?
Regards
Rob

When I sent you the message I gave you the names of the two people living at the address in 1939. I wondered if the lady was his sister. There was another woman living there, surname North born 1914 and married. Whether she has any connection to the Patterson family is not stated. There was a fourth person in the household but the record is closed which usually means that he or she is still alive.
Find My Past website has the following in its records:-
England & Wales Published Wills & Probate Indexes, 1300-1858
This doesn't give you access to the wills themselves just a list of names and where they lived and what I assume is the year they died. There is another column with numbers but I don't know what this signifies.
This is not an area with which I am familiar but no doubt another Rootschatter will know. There is always someone who knows what you wish to know :D That is the great boon of Rootschat.
