Title: Frasers of Rothes / Speymouth / Fochabers
Post by: alan_t on Friday 14 August 20 20:27 BST (UK)
Hi
I'm helping a friend of a friend with a family tree. He's looking for his wife's ancestors for a surprise family tree gift. They were the Frasers. Specifically, he's looking at Margaret Fraser, born around 1831 in Rothes, according to Scottish census records. Does anyone have any info on the family? We don't seem to be able to find the name of either of her parents. She stayed in the area her whole life and is buried in Fochabers (1917). Married a Gordon McQueen in Rothes in 1858. That's all the info they have.

Many thanks.

Download a copy of her marriage cert - should give you her parents names & mothers maiden name

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

According to most censuses - her birthyear was 1826/27 not 1831.  The 1871 is the only one showing 1831

She was also 93 when she died which supports a much earlier birthyear than 1831

The 1861 shows a 7yr old Alexander McQueen??  Margaret was 32 when she married Gordon so either may have been previously married.  The marriage cert will give their previous status

Margaret Fraser, born around 1831 in Rothes, according to Scottish census records.

The original census never gives a date of birth. It says what age the person claimed to be on census day. According to transcriptions
in 1861 she said she was 35
in 1871 she said she was 40
in 1881 she said she was 54
in 1891 she said she was 65
in 1901 she said she was 76.
Her death certificate and gravestone say she was 93 in 1917
So she could have been born any time between 1823 and 1831.

She may be the 25-year-old Margaret Fraser, born Rothes, who was a servant at Garbity in 1851.
She might be the 15-year-old Margaret Fraser who was a servant in Fochabers in 1841.

But as you can get her parents' names from her marriage certificate there is no point in speculating about who they were.
