I have a lady on a local group looking for this family as she has a bereavement card for Robert Hogg who was KIA in Palestine in 1917. He was the first husband of Margaret Patterson and the father of Robert and Margaret. After his death Margaret married James P Stevenson and they emigrated from Scotland to the US via Canada in 1922. I have traced Robert's war medals to a collector in Oregon. James was registered as living in Malheur Oregon when he signed up for the US Draft in WW1. He returned to Scotland to marry the now widowed Margaret and brought her back to the US. When the children first came over they stayed with relatives in Canada with the name Patterson. They moved to the US and eventually took on their stepfather's name of Stevenson. Not sure if they stayed in the US or returned to Canada. Hoping someone recognises the names.

Thank you Sandra. We had the outline of the sad story but you have brought us even more info and more leads. I have sent a link to the lady trying to trace living relatives. None of us expected to end up in the US from starting in Selkirk in Scotland. It was a wild ride and we couldn't have done it without so much help. Thank you again.
-
Excellent, hope it all helped.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the research. I messaged the lady and she will look at the thread when she gets back online. I think she hoped there would be someone local to her in Scotland who she could give the card to. This was indeed an unexpected turn of events. Thanks again for your help.

Have you looked at Robert Hogg siblings in Scotland ?
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra
I tried to follow that route this morning but without success.
I initially could not find his marriage to Margaret ??????? who I think came from Selkirk & the 1911 census has too many Robert Hoggs even in Selkirk. I suspect they were married after the census but could not locate it.

Marriage - Robert Hogg - Maggie Patterson - 1910 - 778/ 44 - Selkirk
It might mean getting the marriage certificate to find out the parents of Robert Hogg if the poster or friend want to go down that avenue.
If they stayed in Scotland, they should appear on the 1911 census.
First child:- Maggie Hogg - 1911 - 778/ 118 - Selkirk
Second Child:- Robert Hogg - 1917 - 778/ 3 - Selkirk
Sandra
Added a possible.
This could be the 1911 census entry
Maggie Hogg - 1911 - F 22 778/ 11/ 6 - Selkirk

Yes. It is a choice of 2 on 1901 census. Both large families

Hi Sandra
Used a spare credit to check the marriage. You have the correct parents.
Robert Hogg & Janet Marchbank Hosie
-
Oh wow - think I should buy a lottery ticket :) Did it give Maggie's Patterson parents ? (George Patterson & Margaret Scott)
Might be possible to trace that Patterson Aunt that was named on a passenger list.
Sandra
George Patterson - Maggie Scott - 1885 - 778/ 32 - Selkirk
-
If George Patterson/Paterson born 13 September 1859 Scotland son of George Paterson/Patterson and Isabella Smith on this 1871 census - has a brother James Patterson born 24 April 1962 Selkirk Scotland then he died New Westminster British Columbia 18 June 1935. The spouse of James Patterson would be Mary Ann Patterson. That would be the aunt listed on the passenger list.
1871 census Berwick Northumberland -
George Paterson 44 Isabella Paterson 46
John Paterson 18 Thomas Paterson 16
Isabella Paterson 13 George Paterson 11 James Paterson 9
James Arnett Patterson -24 April 1962 - died 18 June 1935 New Westminster British Columbia. Aged 73 years. Father George Patterson - mother Isabella - spouse Mary Ann Patterson.

Oh dear, since no informant on the death of Mary - looked for a death of a Jean Patterson - -This one is strange - the daughter Jean mentioned in the obit of James. Jean Patterson remained single - school teacher for 30 years. Father and mother born Scotland. The dates definitely dont match but no one seems to know who her parents were and perhaps how old she was. Had not worked since 1936. ???
