Title: Occupation:Soldier
Post by: Suz777Gall on Saturday 22 August 20 16:42 BST (UK)
My ggf's marriage certificate notes he was a soldier in 1915. I think he joined after 1911 due to the census. Any ideas on how to locate any records? The only true fact I know is his father was Bernard Kelly. The family had no idea he was in the service and he never talked about with his children. I'm not sure if he fought in WW1 or another conflict within Ireland.

Yep that would my ggf, John Kelly. Bernard was his first son. So maybe this record narrows down the time he served. 1912-1918? What are your thoughts?

Suz - welcome to Roots Chat. I am not sure what you mean when you say you think he joined after 1911 'because of the census'. Do you mean he is on the 1911 Ireland Census please?

If we knew his birth year it will be possible to see if his WW1 Army records have survived (not all the records have survived as many were burnt during enemy action in WW2. It is probable that he served in WW1.

If he joined up before WW1 then Dublin Military Archives may hold some records for him. You can contact them here;

http://www.militaryarchives.ie/contact-us

I have used them in the past and they are extremely helpful.

Yes, sorry. I've been looking at these records for months. This is why I decided to reach out.

This is where it gets really cloudy. the Irish 1911 census reflects his birth in 1891.

In the Irish 1901 census, his birth reflects 1883. His father was a Billiard Table Maker
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003797689/

His father was Billiard Table Makers up until 1937. I do know that he lived at 5 Albert Place West up until his father's death.

In 1915 He married. This is were his occupation changes to "solider".

John Kelly's death entry reflects his birth as 1883

Bernard Kelly's death entry
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1935/04815/4296916.pdf

I have tried to research his baptism records. However, that is another pandora's box.

Suz - someone on the Ancestry website seems to have him in their family tree - showing an Army record where he enlisted in 1902.

Same wife and father as you have. However the records are within the Fold3 collection of Ancestry and a subscription is needed. I don't have a subscription I'm afraid.

You MAY find him on the National Archives website -

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C543

but I am NO expert on searching these records for military personnel - I am hoping someone else can help you here.

The John Kelly in the Army Attestation Papers contained in the Fold 3 Records on Ancestry - mentioned in my previous post, shows an enlistment date of 28 May 1902 and an age of 18.

Although this John's birth place is shown as St Thomas, Dublin. So the age fits with the baptism record found by Sinann -- but the 'parish' doesn't.

Hence that soldier's record may not be him.

Unfortunately - as I said I don't have access to Fold 3 so I cannot see any more information from that record.

They may not be the same type of parish.
St Andrew's is the RC parish (I couldn't see the baptisim on the NLI site last night so not sure how trustworthy that record is)
St.Thomas maybe a Civil parish.
Cuffe St appears to be in St.Patrick's Ward although it's at a point where a few areas meet.

The 1901 census might be an enumerator error.
He's listed as 18 & a scholar.
He's not going to be at school at that age.
