Hi Rosie99,

Somewhat - 1901 details puzzling, as two other children, George and Eva, neither of whom married, seem to be missing.

Haven't been able to access FamilySearch for 1911 details, so need to find that census entry.

Thanks for asking.

Regards, Bradley

That's the one. Puzzling though; I never knew her as Annie Eveline, as far as I can remember she was always Eva. Also, another puzzle; Robert was always known as Roy. Again, as far as I can remember he was never Robert.

Williams was Annie's maiden name.

Hope things get back to normal soon so I can track them down in 1911 census.

Thanks for your help.

Hi lancsann,

Roy married a Katherine Field - she was a Yorkshire girl I believe - but do not know date. They had one child, a daughter christened Evelyn

I must be missing something. How did you connect you Roy Roberts, Katherine Field and Evelyn with the Roberts family in 1901 if you have not got the marriage to prove his father. I can't find any R Roberts/Katherine Field marriage anywhere

When was Evelyn born? Is she the one born in 1918?

Hi lancsann,,

Hope this clarifies things somewhat; Roy Roberts was the second son of John Henry Roberts (my grandfather) and Katherine (Kit) Field - the surname given to me by their daughter Evelyn, the one time I met her. Don't know when Roy and  were married or when Evelyn was born, although I guess it must have been in the 1930s.

Putting together the family history has occupied me for the past 20 years, but at last have managed to put it together - thanks in many way due to Rootschatters, to whom I am extremely grateful.

The Roberts family were dysfunctional in the extreme and, I was told, had little affection for their father John Henry. It was said they were jealous of his 'fame' - he was a prodigious composer of Non-conformist hymn tunes - more than 300, many still used today. They heartily disliked the Thomases (my mother's family) who they considered socially inferior being working class, and had no contact with them. It was probably due to family pressure that saw my father, William Sterndale Bennett Roberts, a master mariner, abandon my mother and me when I was six months old, and taking my elder brother to live with the Roberts family - I never saw him until he was 17-years-old, and only reconnected with him shortly before his death in the early 2000s.

Thank you for that explanation. It sounds like you had a fairly tough life and a hard job sorting your family history out.
