Title: Diary - Sunday 23 August 2020
Post by: River Tyne Lass on Sunday 23 August 20 18:48 BST (UK)
Woke up very early.  I have a 12 hour nightshift coming up tonight.  It always feels like an in limbo day, (waiting and clock watching) before going in for the first of a block.
I can never sleep before the first one and so it feels like it is going to be a very long day and night ahead before I can next go to bed.
I have just spent the day pottering about the house.  I did some washing in the morning and decided to risk hanging it out despite the grey skies.  I also baked a quiche and made some soup to freeze.  I was just about to go on RC in the afternoon when I noticed it was starting to rain.  I then had to dash out to bring the washing in.  Thankfully, I think I just caught it in time as it is almost dry.  Then I went on RC for a little bit and read a book.  Then a bit more pottering before tea.  Then I went on RC again until I noticed the time!  Then I had to rush around like the proverbial headless chicken getting myself sorted and ready to head off to the bus stop.
Now I am on my first bus en route to nightshift.

You'll probably be there when I finish typing this RTL but hope your shift soon passes. Glad you managed to get the washing done, the weather has been really variable lately, hope you've been feeling a bit calmer otherwise than you did on Friday. Maybe there'll be some information from your new contact to look forward to tomorrow!

Was reading in bed last night, coming up to midnight so had a look to see if I could get my favoured Tesco delivery slot when the site refreshed after midnight, I have two booked before that. Got the one I wanted, put some of usual items in the basket and checked out. Now that I can get slots more easily I'll be able to stop over ordering on some items as I was doing in case I couldn't get a slot.

Slept very late this morning, maybe because I didn't want to get up. Was dreaming that I was in a very large city centre branch of Boots, no-one was wearing face masks. A member of staff approached and asked if I wanted a mask, I said Yes please. He looked behind the counter and said Sorry, there aren't any left.

Laptop took ages updating again, read replies on Rootschat when it finally finished , wrote some replies. Got to around lunchtime but wasn't hungry. Had to download new email app on my tablet, old one no longer working. Technology is great but can be so time consuming.

It had been raining earlier, decided to go out when it had stopped. Warmer out than I thought, usual walk. Had been home about ten minutes when it started again, was on and off all afternoon, very heavy at one point. No gardening today. Spent the afternoon looking at Rootschat, finally got round to backing up my family tree onto external hard drive. Paid credit card bill, reflects my entire spending now, have still got money in my purse that's been there since March. Did a load of ironing, some cleaning in the bathroom. Tea and telly.

Having had a little break from posting, but still reading everyone's entries I decided it was time to continue with the daily diary..... I had decided I'd keep a record to mull over in brighter times but now there will be a gap!
Oh well it's mostly the same from one day to the next so I'll just read between the lines!

RTL - I'm sure it's not easy going back to nights after a few days off... I certainly couldn't do it! I've a friend who works shifts at Gatwick Airport and she is one of these lucky people who as soon as her head hits the pillow she's asleep... she tells me it's her faith that keeps her grounded and is always telling me off for my faithlessness! We've been friends since we were 6 so I'm not in the least offended by her comments... she's probably right anyway! Hope you don't come across anymore inebriated people whilst waiting for your buses! You're keeping up all the good work and we can only thank you for it..

Roobarb - your days sounds as exciting as mine was... hope you're feeling in brighter spirits... shopping online seems so much more simple and just clearing the bill monthly far better than having to go to the bank every five minutes! It seems daft when I go to places like the post office to pay by card so as not to use cash, unless I have virtually the right amount then I just say put any change into their charity box so I don't handle money they might give me back! When we visited NZ in 2005 I think it was our son gave us his card, they were called F boss cards and you paid for everything with it, seemed odd at the time but meant we didn't have to keep changing £ to NZ $ as we'd transferred money to his account to use for our trip. It worked well.

My day...
Started off with a trip to Lidls... unheard of going to shop on a Sunday! But they had in store a long handled hedge trimmer my OH wanted and as he was playing golf I went... it was very busy... I didn't feel that comfortable in there so got what I needed and left quickly... social distancing what's that... I'm standing waiting for some idiot to move, he was day dreaming in the middle of the isle and I couldn't get past him and this woman just waltzes past both of us while I'm trying to climb the shelves to get out of her way....
I went into Waitrose .. first time since lockdown started, they were monitoring numbers and all seemed much more organised and comfortable.. it was actually quite nice to just shop in a more normal way and I was able to get stuff that I'd not had on my c n c lists as I'd forgotten I'd needed them till I'd seen them!
Having had our daughter and two grandsons staying with us from Wednesday till after lunch on Saturday I'd needed to replenish stocks... they eat a lot for youngsters!
We had a lovely time with them... no hugs though until they left then we had leg hugs from the boys although eldest at 7 is up to my cheast now! Daughter wouldn't hug us which was awful... sanitising the house too after they'd gone felt like I was erasing their visit to us... I'd kept downstairs loo just for them to use and main bathroom... we did sit in their bedroom for stories but had windows and doors open all the time, even in the winds we'd had on Friday...
Washing out and all bedding and towels done ..
Sat and read the Sunday papers, had some lunch.
OH home he relaxed and watched cricket whilst I did the ironing... brought the board into the kitchen to do it so I could watch Netflix... our daughter has it and we discovered that she can add us and put it on our TVs too...
Had torrential rain and had to dash out to rescue nearly dry washing..
Lamb chops with new pots and our own veg for dinner..
Watched some tv and bed...

Not very exciting day ...

You can do that in the UK too with your bank card.

Since I seem to have joined this diary thread..  it is the 24th here.

I have been to Pilates this morning so feel very pleased with myself.  We all went to coffee after. Contactless payment with my Eftpos card  :). At last everyone is using the Covid QR tracer and we spread out both at Pilates and along a very long coffee table. no Private  conversations there!

A very black rain cloud in the offing, so it will be genealogy and RC this afternoon. I had been planning to divide and plant out a whole lot of Hostas my brother in law gave me in the Autumn.  They are just starting to show signs of shooting.

Woke in the middle of a dream about people I haven't seen for years.  Felt very strange.  Day a mixture of sun/cloud - did a pile of washing and got it out as a good breeze so should dry fairly quickly.  Had a late lunchtime snack and then dead-headed/tidied up the plants in all the pots.   Sat outside for a while chatting to neighbour.  No rain had been forecast but around 5pm it was getting darker and darker and then we had a torrential downpour.   Had just managed to get my washing in before it started.

Still no sign of my scissors - can't think of anywhere else to look now.  So annoying.

Should have washed my hair today (which I hate, or rather the phaffing about afterwards) but since I have a hair appointment tomorrow there seemed little point.   So, will walk in like the wild 'woman' of Borneo and emerge my usual self.

Had stripped the bed in the morning, shut bedroom door and completely forgot I hadn't re-made it until late in the evening.  Much cooler nights now.

Usual evening events so nothing of note to report.

Stay safe everyone but also try to be a little braver now.   We have all been good - with it being 5 months now since lockdown we've got to emerge from this 'hibernation' even if only baby steps to start with.

Nothing eventful for me on Sunday. Daughter requested a family dinner - I wasn’t really in the mood but decided to go ahead with it but keep it very simple. As I already had most of the ingredients I opted for a curry - so I only needed to pop out to buy a few things. Started cooking it early so those who were working on Monday could get home early.

Later in the evening watched some rubbish on TV .... and I am too embarrassed to say what.  :-[
 ;D

Annette ... re your missing scissors. I presume you have retraced your steps? Going back over where you last saw them, or used them, and what you did immediately afterwards in case you have put them in an unexpected place? It’s a long story but my daughter lost her keys to her rental house a week or so ago, and they turned up in our bathroom cupboard.  :-\ I have lost a number of pairs of secateurs over the years - I suspect thrown out with garden clippings.  :(

Thanks for putting me right with the spelling and the full explanation!
You're right you can do this in the UK but not in 2005!

It was not something we were able to do back then which is why I commented on it.... forward thinking in NZ.... bit like your women getting the vote before those in U.K.
It was very useful whilst we were travelling around the country .

Like Ruskie said, retrace your steps, I do that if I mislay something but it is frustrating, St Anthony is the patron saint of finding things I believe!! , they will turn  up when you least expect them to, just forget for awhile and it will probably come to you

Annette, you might hear from the people you dreamt about, let us know if you do

This is just quick as I will have to be getting ready again soon to head off for next nightshift.

Thanks Roobarb.  I am very excited about new match!  I have invited them to view my tree.  If I do not hear back from them by a fortnight I will message them again.  I would like to know if they can spot any links as soon as possible.  However, I don't want them to feel pestered by me about it.   I think this might be more important to me than them.  I get the impression that this person has only previously concentrated on their American side and has not looked at the UK side before.

Caroline, it is great to see you back!  :D I think your very interesting posts will have been missed by us all.
Most of the time, like the person you mention, I can fall asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow.  My trouble is that I have interrupted sleep and keeping waking up and/or wake up too soon.

Annette, if you have looked in familiar places and retraced steps, perhaps try looking in unexpected places and or consider what you may have last used scissors for.
I once bought some salad cream once but later could not find this.  I began to conclude that I must have left it behind in the shop.  Then I did find it in an unexpected place .. in a cupboard with my cleaning products! :-[ :-X

Caroline, lovely to see you back  :)  You must be missing your daughter and the boys already, good that you managed to go to Waitrose to stock up after their visit. Not so good in Lidl but at least you got what you went there for, hope for some fine weather so your OH can use it. Must admit that's the only thing I miss about going to Aldi, seeing what special buys they have, I've bought a lot of useful stuff there. Certainly don't miss the rest of the experience!

Nice to hear from you Mckha489  :) Always good to hear how things are going at the other side of the world. Coming up to spring there, how lovely, it doesn't seem five minutes since the spring flowers were out here.

Annette, do you think you might have thrown your scissors in the rubbish by mistake, like Ruskie did with the secateurs? So frustrating.

Ruskie, I'm so intrigued now as to what it was you watched on TV!  :D Not sure which programmes you get there so it's difficult to hazard a guess. Later in the evening so it can't have been a children's programme. Naked Attraction?  ;D

RTL, hope you don't have to wait a fortnight to hear from your American match, I suppose the time difference makes it a bit more random as to when you can expect replies.

It's good to be back and thanks RTL & Roobarb for your lovely comments..

Annette- I'm a dab hand at 'putting things down and then not being able to find them'.... recently I've managed to loose a very useful two pronged garden tool which is great for getting weeds in the lawn harder rooted items out... I used it for a small walnut growing in the middle of a spreading geranium and used it to get it out... where is it now heavens knows... it may turn up or maybe not... pity as it's very handy!
When digging in the compost heap some years ago I spied a red, white & blue thing and when lifted it out there were one set of our patio door keys which we'd lost! I blamed OH... it could have been me but we were on the verge of having the locks changed as we hadn't been able to find them...
I've thrown more veg peelers, small knives away with peelings than I care to remember.... have you looked for your scissors under your chairs, sofa down the sides of the cushions or in your cupboards...

I’ve thrown out several veg peelers with the peelings as well Caroline.

Roobarb, we get all sorts of rubbish TV programmes from the UK and the USA. I (partly) watched three in a row - all were bad.  :-[

What busy bees you all are, I do admire you.
Ordered some nice books for neighbour’s little girl’s Birthday from POSTSCRIPT and some “ to have in “.
Flash Harry will like some of them.
Sorted out my TV licence ,done now.
Drs.Phoned to say my blood tests are due ,
Cholesterol Sugar levels andKidney  function.
I don’t know that I can stand such excitement  ::)
Well some heavy storms and gale force winds forecast, my little greenhouse is dismantled as otherwise it will blow away!

Flash Harry has his bag packed ready for school on September 4 th.
He has been with adults for such a long time now,but his parents have made sure he has shared and taken turns etc.
Sister phoned today, believe it or not I did not get a word in edgewise!
It has a darned cheek this Virus you know, upsetting her lunch engagements etc!
I have given up buying sanitiser except for hands ,bleach does the job according to the TV advert for no brand just bleach .

No plans really for tomorrow, other than a snug day in ,I shall probably only  venture out to feed the fish.
Hope those travelling don’t have difficulties on their journeys .

Roses all washed out ,buds rotting before opening ,so much rain.
The gladioli will get a thrashing tomorrow.
An Apple fallen from the little tree ,expect more after the winds we are to have.
Thanks for all your news , look after yourselves everyone.
Cheerio. Viktoria.

Thank you all for your concern re. my scissors - Still no trace!   Down sides of furniture, under furniture, everywhere they could be and everywhere they shouldn't be.   Can only assume they've got thrown away by mistake.

Annette. You should try to replace your scissors with exactly the same ones, if still available. I know that some items which used to be top notch are now manufactured in other countries and quality is not the same. I hope that is not the case with your special scissors.

They do say ( who “ they” are I am not sure ,but - ) that when you stop worrying about lost items they will turn up somewhere ridiculous!
Hope it is so with you.

Sometimes they do turn up, sometimes in the most unlikely places,  treat yourself to a new pair and forget a bout the lost ones, chances are they will turn up

Bottom of a handbag? I sometimes find a tenner I've forgotten about in mine, worth a try.

I found a tenner years ago in  my husbands suit pocket,  he asked me to  take it to the
cleaners, surely everyone checks pockets first,  i told him it was mine, i kept it but payed towards a meal out, it was years ago
