Yes I thought so, I was worried about that one because I had seen the tree on Ancestry, it was the Hannah/Ann which added to the confusion.

The tree states born 1826 Pointon, Cheshire but I think that is based on the 1861 census other census records record various places in Cheshire. No record in the county as far as I can see.

Robert Gregg
Birth   1826 Pointon Lincolnshire England
Marriage   01/1849 Sheffield Yorkshire England
Residence   1891 Handsworth Yorkshire England
Death   10/1891 Sheffield Yorkshire England

Father   GEORGE CRAIG (1799-1840)
Mother   MARY ANN HARGREAVES (1799-1859)
Spouse   Hannah Walker (1827-1899)

I think that is a contented especially with the spelling of the surname. I am led to believe this is a Scottish connection

There were a large number of mines in what is now South Yorkshire, when they lived in Wath Upon Dearne, they were probably nearer to the mining areas, maybe less so when the moved to   Handsworth, Yorkshire.. Some information on the sites below, plenty more on line.

You mentioned earlier that you thought there was a Scottish connection, which given the name, depending which one it is, may be right. Do you have any specific information?

On the otherhand unless Mary was not registered there is no Mary b 1849-1851 with the mmn of Walker

Robert in general did not seem to know where he was born. On one census it just says Cheshire, on another it says Cheshire N K (not known)

No just that family members think Craig is the right one.  I was kinda hoping that Ancestry DNA Scottish link was there.  Back to researching and trying to solve a tangled web.

Thanks

If George was born in Scotland say between 1790 & 1800 there were the following possibilities, as an example.

Gregg, no George but 44 others in period.. Craig 1,285 including 22 George’s but of course the connection could have been earlier generations.

Good luck, Colin

Hi

I have just come across your post today, Amelia Gregg/Craig sister of Robert is my 3rd Great Grandmother, I have recently been researching the family.

I believe Robert was christened at Wath upon Dearne, where Mary Ann Hargreaves family came from, even though on the census it says he was born at Cheshire.

I think our 4th Great Grandfather George Craig is the one buried at Handsworth Church 7/4/1840 age 40, died at Four Lane Ends (there is no record of this death on GRO) so I have just applied to Sheffield Registrar but unfortunately they haven't been able to find any death record. (Gutted)

I have found a George Craig birth 26/11/1898 Attercliffe Father Robert mother Mary.
plus other children listed below
Joseph Craig  1801
Matthew Creag  1803
Robert Creag 1805-1815 (buried Handsworth Church)
Mary Creag 1805
Charles Creag 1808
Benjamin Creag 1809
Thomas Creig 1811
Francis Creig 1813

Just to let you know I got the above information from transcriptions.  A lot of the above names correspond in my case with the next generation.

I see you mentioned a scottish connection, just wondered how you came to this please.

let me know what you think about my finds

Best wishes
Chris
