This is my 1st entry so I hope I do this correctly.
My great great grandfather Patrick Kelley born 1844 (US Census 1880) married Mary ( ) Kelley around 1868 and living in Port Chester NY. Relocated to Norwalk Conn 1886-1888 where his last two children were born. He died prior to the 1900 census.
Children are James (b-1869), Anna Elizabeth b-(1871), Ellen (b-1872) Catharine (b-1875), Matilde (b-1878), Thomas (b-1880), Julia (1882) (All born in NY), Elizabeth (b-1884), John (1886) (the last two born in Conn).
I found reference to Mary (Mahar) Kelley, spouse- "Patrick Kelley" but it looks like that may be in Australia.
Anna Kelley (my Great Grandmother) married Albert Reed Sterling 1898.
John Kelley died on Christmas Day 1905'ish when he fell through the ice and drown. (Connecticut)
Any help would be so appreciated. I can't think where else to look :-[

Welcome to Rootschat Bill :D
Could you tell us what it is that you wish to find out? You have listed the parents and children and information on a couple of children but haven't made it clear what you are trying to do. Go backwards with the parents?
I see from the 1880 census, assuming I have the correct one, that they are living in Port Chester as you stated. Patrick and Mary were born in Ireland and Patrick is an iron moulder.

Welcome to Rootschat :)
There were lots of Kellys/Kelleys in Norwalk, including several Patricks so just be careful not to muddle them all up (very easily done). I went to school with and worked with the family of this Patrick Kelley but the names and dates and stories I can remember don't fit with the family you are looking for.

Will have a look later if I can find your relatives as there should be lots online. Connecticut certificates ask for details of parents, including mother's maiden name. Years ago it was just a matter of going into the old Town Hall and asking to see records but Town Hall is now in what was the old High School and it's not as simple now-

Wow, this is great. I don't know how to respond to individual reply's yet but there is so much good help posted already. One response indicates that Matilda tied to Louis. Last night my mother told me that there was a Mr. Louis that was taken in by the family and she thinks Matilda might have married him. I also know that Albert Reed Sterling (my Great grand father) married Anna "Loretta" Elizabeth Kelly.
I see a lot of other good tips and information as well. I am so glad I found this site! ;D
Thank you everyone!

Thanks Sandra, that confirms what my mother thought to be true

Hi Girl Guide
Actually both Patrick and Mary were born in New York and all four of their parents were born in Ireland but immigrated to the states. I am trying to identify Patrick and Mary's parents.
I found a reference to Patrick Kelley and Mary (Mahar) with a daughter Ellen. The birth dates for all three line up https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/details/5885f59d71f67ad16a76457558120aa225d0622fc597bfd379a8b93dbdaf675b
The only problem is that I found it on the Queensland Government site that makes me think its a similar family in Australia.

Hi. I had such a great response on my 1st post I thought I’d try my luck again. Last time though I did not give enough information. I hope this is not too much.
I am looking for my great (X2) grandparents “Kelly” of Port Chester NY/Norwalk Conn who are in the 1980 census link –
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBL-9HWL?i=47&cc=1417683&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMZNN-1NY
They relocated to Norwalk Conn between 1882 and 1884.
We know a bit about the family after this but nothing from before this. We know Patrick and Mary were born in NY and all four of their parents were immigrants from Ireland. I have searched for weeks but have not been able to single out this Patrick from the other 4,000,000 (or so) Patrick Kelley’s.
I have found one potential lead but it comes from Queensland Gov site in Australia. This entry-
https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/details/5885f59d71f67ad16a76457558120aa225d0622fc597bfd379a8b93dbdaf675b
Connects Patrick Kelley with Mary E Mahar with child Ellen Kelley b 1872 which matches with the Ellen in the 1980 census above. Only problem is I would think this implies they should be in “Australia” when I am looking in NY/Conn. However- I could find no information on Ellen after the 1880 census so perhaps she ended up in Australia?
I guess my question would be- Is anyone familiar with The Queensland Gov site and know if it would also have people in America? Or does any of the more experienced people here have any idea how I can single out Patrick and Mary? If her maiden name is in fact Mahar thats a help too.
Any help is greatly appriciated!

Thanks for all that Sandra. You helped confirm a lot of what my mother could remember and filled in some blanks too.
-
In the Norwalk city directories, Mary Kelley first shows up as widow of Patrick in the 1897 directory, so seems likely that Patrick died shortly before that. I didn't see a likely match in the Connecticut death index, which starts in 1897. https://www.ctatatelibrarydata.org/death-records/
Do you have anything that shows Mary's maiden name? It sounds like the record from Australia is just a coincidence.

I also know that Albert Reed Sterling (my Great grand father) married Anna "Loretta" Elizabeth Kelly.
Thank you everyone!

1927 Norwalk city directory - Kelley, Mary A., widow of Patrick, died Mar. 2, 1926 age 62.
The CT death index indicated that she died in Norwalk.
It looks like there may be an obituary or death notice for her on page 19 of this newspaper towards the bottom - https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=KKiikWAUrRgC&dat=19260305&printsec=frontpage&hl=en However, either the condition of the paper or the scanning is so bad that it's not legible. Sometimes local libraries will do look ups, so that may be an option if the paper is legible in person.

A little confused. I wonder if there are two Mary and Patrick Kelley in Connecticut at this time.
The one who died 1926 was 62 years old so born 1865.
Mary Kelley born 1847 New York (widow of Patrick) appears on the 1930 census aged 83 years with her daughter Anna and son-in-law Albert Reed Sterling. Maybe I'm confused ???

Wow, thanks for putting in so much effort.
1st- The 1930 census (how did I miss that) is he living with her son in law and daughter. When I didn't see her in the 1920 census I assumed she had passed between 1910 and 1920.
Yes I do believe there are multiple Patrick and Mary Kelley's. Thats really making it frustrating and not knowing her maiden name does not help at all.
I could not figure out the newspaper but the 1930 census makes it clear she died after 1930.
added not-
From your first posts I learned abut the city directories which I never knew existed. I turned my mother on to them and showed her how to search for all the people she knew as a little girl. She loves it. (Thanks for that)

Hi Sandra,
I also have developed a flow chart of the family with every thing I know to date. But I don't know how to post it. If your interested ( I don't want to impose) but I could send it to you.
There is like a gazillion Patrick Kelley's and the same for Mary. But if I can find any document with a maiden name it would go a long way towards isolating them out of the pack.
Once again, thanks so much for all your effort! :)

Apart from a brief mention, didn't do Albert Sterling family on the other thread originally, thinking you would have exhausted that avenue if it was a direct line, so glad I went back to it.
The 1880 census lists a number of Kelley children to Patrick and Mary, in Rye Westchester New York.
Looking at Westchester County, New York Genealogy site, statewide registration for births and deaths started in 1880. Quite possibly there are no marriage records for the time frame you require.
Sometimes means searching church records but you don't really have a positive area for the marriage.

Genealogy References at the bottom of the page might be useful.
The US Moderator lives in that area so may offer more sources for you.
If you have any questions then please ask - someone would probably be able to help.
It may also help if your posts were merged and moved to the USA board - a moderator could help you do that.

Thanks,
Yes, I found the 1900 death record date (12/25/1900) but no information about it other than what my mother knew. This is a great find that adds to the Kelley story/history.
He got those skates that Christmas morning!
Thank You
