Title: WW 11 uniform
Post by: nanville on Saturday 29 August 20 15:27 BST (UK)
Hi all seems  I had left someone under the impression that I was posting a photograph along with my
question sorry if I misled you all I had no intention of doing so.
The question was about my father and the fact that on his uniform shirt he had what seemed like two
epaulets on the left shoulder,he was in the desert at the time with the  H L I, and something to do with signals.
I'll hold my breath and hope my fellow searchers will know the answers.

all the best  nanville.

Are you not able to post at least part of the photo?  Two epaulettes on one shoulder is rather odd and sounds like a slide on a shoulder strap but without seeing it, difficult to give any sort of answer.
Example:

PS The 2nd Battalion HLI was in the desert not 1st Battalion which came up in your other thread related to the BEF

My thoughts were that it was used for his semaphore flags  MaxD. I really wont post any pictures .in the past I did on another site and they were pinched and displayed on their family tree.
cheers nanville
ps It was kgarrard that mentioned the 1st battalion as written on wikipedia.

pps the epaulets is an ordinary one then the other on top is half the length and buttoned on top of the main one.

Hi MaxD I wasn't talking about the desert , I was talking about the British Expeditionary Force to Europe in 1939 , H L I 1st battalion was part  of it , and my father. When they left , back to Britain my dad had some leave then off to north Africa , then Sicily and onto Italy he got hit with shrapnel at Monte Casino and was left there as the Army had to make up time to get after the  Germans .

cheers nanville
ps then home for to take part in D-Day

and the fact that on his uniform shirt he had what seemed like two

is the quote in your post that I was answering.

The 1st Battalion did indeed go to France with the BEF as KGarrad said.  It went back to NW Europe in 1944.

I thought it sensible to point out that it was 2nd Battalion  that fought in the desert.

Can you not clip out the shoulder, I can't imagine anybody wanting to steal a snippet of a photo.

Otherwise your "two epaulettes" will go unidentified.  Bit like asking for a cap badge ID without showing the badge.
