Title: Mary Cotter b c 1905
Post by: ballydw on Wednesday 02 September 20 23:17 BST (UK)
Mary Cotter  b c 1905 Bristol Bucks Pennsylvania Parents Patrick Cotter & Nora Killackey. Marys mother died24 Jan 1910 & Mary returned to Ireland at some stage to relatives and married & died here.
I am hoping to locate any records in particular her ship record for return to Ireland. Also while I have her fathers name Patrick Cotter born c. 1868 Ireland & his marriage to Nora Killackey in 1899 I do not have any records for him after his wifes death or do not know where in Ireland he originated.
Thank you for any assistance.

There are a Patrick & Mary Cotter on the SS Baltic from NY to Queenstown on 11 Jun. 1911.  Patrick is a labourer and Mary is listed as an infant.  No other Cotters with them.  The infant part is off, but maybe they marked the wrong column.

No, it doesn't say anything more than they got off in Queenstown.  They were both listed as Irish, which may not be a perfect fit with Mary being US-born.

There were 15 men named Patrick Cotter, age 38 +/- 5 years on the 1911 Census of Ireland. All but 4 were heads with wives and children. 1 was a widowed son in law in the household, but he had 2 children born in Ireland between 1901 and 1911.
That leaves 3 others, and all of them were also there in 1901.

So I wonder if Patrick went back to the US or on to England.?

If so, then Patrick died by 8 April 1923:

Death, Philadelphia, at Germantown Hospital

father: Patrick Cotter, deceased, born in Ireland

Helen Cotter Ryan,
born 1 Feb 1916, died 6 November 2003
father: Joseph Patrick Cotter
mother: Delia H Cotter

[she was married by January 1936, based on her SS records

---------
I can't find the death record for Patrick Cotter himself. He is not
Patrick Cotter, age 19, buried 30 May 1920, New Cathedral Cemetery 2nd and Butler

-----------
and if that is him re-marrying, then the age and immigration year roughly agree with the man who arrived in 1891 who said he was headed to New York.

This puts Patrick  in the US in January 1910. Had he taken Mary back to Ireland already, after the 1910 Census, or did he go between Jan 1911 and his possible remarriage on 27 Sep 1911? Or did she travel with someone else?

Thank you oldohiohome for your trojan research it will take me time to digest all the records. One query on 1910 census when Patrick Cotter is with the Atkinson family (Elizabeth atkinson was a sister to Nora Killackey Cotter) it gives Elizabeth Cotter age 5 is this another daughter I have Mary in Ireland in 1911 age 9. Also 2nd marriage for Patrick Cotter probably 2nd wife could be Delia Heaphy? :)

1. I don’t know, the births aren’t showing up. I will take another look.
2. Heaphy could be right. It would sound the same. Does it ring a bell?

since receiving all your information I have traced Delia Heavey born in Co Galway Ireland 1st Jan 1888 parents Andrew Heavey & Catherine Silk. I think they may have all moved to PA as they are not showing on Irish census in 1901. The purpose of my search really is Patrick Cotter as I had a DNA match to a grandson of Patricks daughter Mary and as I have Cotter both maternal and paternal I believe this is how we match. But I cannot locate any birth records for Patrick in Ireland that I can tie in with my own ancestry. In some records Patrick is down as Joseph P so confusing. I found another son to Patrick & Delia a John b 1921 on 1930 census he is 9yrs

I don't know where this record was hiding all day.

birth 14 March 1904, Philadelphia
father: Patrick J Cotter, born Cork, Ireland
mother: Nora Kellakey, born Tipperary, Ireland

but most of the Cotters were from Cork anyway, from what I saw, so it doesn't narrow it down too much.

It might be a good idea. You have a list of children's names. After you eliminate the ones from Nora's side and from Delia's side, the list might tell you something.
Annie might be Patrick's mother's name, and I wouldn't be too surprised if Patrick J's father was Patrick J as well, but it's just a hunch.

And you have March 1873 and 28 March 1874 as possible birth information. And in Cork. (So post on the Cork board).

----------
We're probably not going to find much more in the US, unless his marriage record names his parents, but that is not too likely, especially since the 2nd one in 1911 didn't ask for them. They added information to the records as the years went by, not the other way around.

-------
Link back to this thread in case anyone on the Cork board needs the information, it will save them time.

I only looked in 1873 and 1874 in Cork, and there might still be some I missed due to spelling at civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/, and ancestry's indexing.

edited to add
other children to this couple: Johanna (1865), John (1866), Bridget (1868), Ann (1870).

I have no connection in skull co cork that I know of. I have concentrated my birth search in area of Dunmanway west co cork & Midleton East co cork. I have seen a few possibilities but none with births in March 1873/1874. These had fathers Patrick Mothers Margaret & Kate. Looking at ship records unfortunately info is scarce mostly doesnt give origin or destination i.e name of person going to.Are there any Death Certs available for PA maybe show his parents names. Patrick immigrated in1892 per 1900 census.
Great work by you to locate the marriage details also. Thank you

1. I posted his death record - his 2nd wife didn't know his parents' names.
2. There is a possible 1891 arrival for him in one of the early posts, but that Patrick said he was headed to New York. I might look through the Philadelphia arrivals themselves - they were a separate set of records.
3. Thanks for narrowing down the areas of Cork.
4. One possibility left in the US is if he had siblings also in Philadelphia, but so far I haven't seen anyone else named Cotter at any of his addresses. He isn't in all the city directories for some reason.
5. Comparing the signatures on the marriage records - I'd say it is the same Patrick who married both Nora and Delia.
6. He must not have had an obituary, or someone here would have found it by now.

I might look through the Philadelphia arrivals themselves - they were a separate set of records.
He isn't in all the city directories for some reason.
I didn't find him by searching the Philadelphia arrivals separately.
I looked back through the city directories. There are no other Cotters at any of his addresses - the ones for him on the censuses or the ones for him in the city directories.

Google her first and last names + New Jersey and there are a lot of results, including a linkedin profile. Her phone and address shouldn't be hard to find. An educator and author, she might know the family history.  Let me/us know if you don't find her and I will take a look later today or tomorrow. Busy right now.
