Title: William Carey, Hailsham area (abt 1808)
Post by: SamuelF992 on Thursday 03 September 20 22:58 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I've had a brick wall with William Carey, born in Sussex around 1808, for a long time. I've recently got a DNA match which should clear things up, but only seems to complicate things further.

William married Lydia Brook in Herstmonceux in 1828, and they had 8 children together. They moved to London in the 1830s and he died in Islington in 1883. He gives his place of birth as Hailsham in 1861 and Worthing in 1881. In the others he just lists "Sussex". The only baptism I can find for a William Carey in Sussex around the time of his birth is in Sedlescombe in 1807.

I recently got an Ancestry thru-line which tells me I am related to a descendent of the Careys via Robert Carey, also born in Sedlesecombe in 1809. However, this branch of the family moved to America, and all the research others have done shows William also having done so, and dying in Massachusetts, so I'm pretty confused by this match.

Any help very much appreciated

Samuel

Hi Omega,

Fantastic find. Thank you so much. Makes good sense too as William has both Peter and Ann among his children. Are these records only available through the SFHG? I've found who I presume to be Peter and Ann in the census but can't find baptisms or marriages for them.

Best wishes
Samuel

These might be of interest, all at Hailsham.

Peter Carey bap. 26 Feb 1785 s/o Edward & Lyddia

Edward Carey bap 13 Apr 1758 s/o Daniel & Mary

Danell Carey bap 25 Jan 1741/2 s/o John & Hana

Danell Ren bap 25 Apr 1744 s/o Marey Ren, father Carey

I'll look for marriages and spouse's baptisms later if no-one else has found them.

Couple of marriages at Hailsham;

Edward Carey & Lydia Errige 23 Sep 1782 at Hailsham, Edward of Hailsham, Lydia of Eastbourne.

Daniel Carey & Mary Ren 03 May 1744, both of the parish - Mary Ren had a son Daniel baptised 25 April 1744 with the father named as Carey - illegitimate birth quickly resolved by marriage eight days later.

First Carey baptisms recorded at Hailsham in 1740, children of John and Hannah no Ren baptisms recorded.

Can't find any alternative surname spellings for either Carey or Ren - did wonder if Ren was actually Wren but no baptisms under that name.

Thanks so much for all your work on this. Ren/Wren makes sense to me. Eridge is an interesting name, had never come across it before. Locational from Sussex apparently

Siblings of Peter baptised at Hailsham:

Samuel 08 Feb 1793
Harriot 19 Jun 1796

Eleven year gap between Peter and Samuel would seem to indicate other siblings baptised elsewhere.

Siblings of William baptised at Hailsham:

Maria 27 Nov 1809
Delia 04 Mar 1811
Barbary 12 Jan 1814
Elizabeth 14 May 1815

If you have a lot of Sussex ancestors it would certainly be worth joining Sussex Family History Group - they have baptism and burial records on-line and a Sussex Marriage Index CD.
