Title: Army records circa 1870
Post by: alison300 on Friday 04 September 20 17:49 BST (UK)
Trying to help someone with their family tree.

They only have a name, George Wright born c1835 who served with RGA in 1867 (details taken from a bapt in Woolwich).  Would his service record be at the National Archives?

Alison -- there are old Military records on the Find My Past website (if you have access) as well as at National Archives - however it would be useful to know his approx year and place of birth to include in the search criteria. Maybe you have found him on later census records and know this information.

George Wright seems to be a fairly common name.

Erm, the RGA wasn't formed until 1899.

Oh that's a good find Kloumann.

I had been overfaced by all the George Wrights (not having noticed his approx year of birth on Alison's original message!)

Alison those papers will be interesting for your friend if it is the correct man. They show his service history. Other info in the papers says he was born Clapham and a Stonemason.

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately she doesn't know much at all.  We have only found him on 1 census and he says he was born in Suffolk c1835.

We don't have an occupation either - the baptisms we have found on Ancestry are transcriptions and not the actual image so she needs to get them from a record office to see if they contain more info.  One of the birth certs. from 1866 and in Woolwich says "Private Army Hospital Corps"; the one from 1867 says "Gunner Royal Artillery".

Appreciate we have very little to go on.

Unable to find a marriage for a George Wright to a Susannah Louisa Watts.

Did find a marriage in 1859 Lambeth, for a Susannah Watts to a William Bishop.

Coincidence or what?

George jr birth was reg'd in Lewisham 1866 & Percival in Greenwich 1867

The owner of this tree on Ancestry believes that the family went under the name of Bishop in the censuses: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/120878944/person/122122051573/facts

Do you know -- I was looking for the marriage and found the Bishop one - and also the tree on Ancestry.

We don't know the census year Alison mentioned, where the Wright family were found. Or were they? Was it just George who was found?

There is a death in Woolwich 1873 of a George Wright. Possible?

A Percival William Wright, age 0, died Shoreditch, 1868. Could be the other son?

Blimey i wasn't expecting so much help - THANK YOU EVERYONE.  There's lots to take in here.

the marriage in 1859 and the death in 1873 - thanks Kloumann - are definetely of interest so she'll need to order them.

the census entries you found in 1871 and 1881 are spot on and we have these; the name "Bishop" crops up a lot and this has us confused.

she has been trying to find the marriage of Susannah to George but not been able to find it - therefore my thinking is that either they didn't marry - or they married abroad; i think the former more likely.
