Title: Diary Friday 4th September
Post by: Roobarb on Friday 04 September 20 23:43 BST (UK)
Was so tired last night, went to sleep a bit earlier and woke quite late today. Not a bad day, what they call on the weather forecast 'sunny intervals '.

Haven't done much at all today. Decided to go for a walk on the beach at low tide which was about midday. Took a jacket as it was cool and can be much colder on the beach. There were a few people walking, the beach wasn't the usual long stretch of smooth sand, there were lots of ripples and pools and pebbles. Had to weave around to avoid getting my feet wet, as I got further along there was quite a lot of seaweed, the stuff that looks like a mop with a long handle. Again, unusual for this beach. A little further and there was a great shelf of the stuff and it stunk. I've never seen the beach like this, hope the sea takes it all back out again. Turned back then and came home for a late lunch.

Did a few things on the computer then had a lovely long phone call with a friend. Apart from folding washing and general tidying I didn't do much else. Nice to have a lazy day.

Fish for tea, it was advertised as chargrilled with some topping, two thin strips.  It said two portions, I could have eaten both,  quite tasty but not enough for two. I'll make it myself another time. After I've eaten the other portion that is.

Not good news from N.Z. 2 deaths. A man in his late 50's yesterday and a Dr in his 80's today both in Auckland.  12 more days of level 2 for me and level 2.5 for Auckland. (no gatherings over 10, no more than 50 at weddings and funerals.)
Easy day for me. Just the washing in and out.
I am limited to what I can do because of my legs and other health issues. Spring is arriving and so too my hayfever.
This morning I had to go through all my photo album's as youngest son wanted 1 photo. Sod's law it was in the last one. They were on my old computer but when it crashed I couldn't retrieve them.
Today's job will be to scan them all into my Laptop. Next time one of the children want a photo i wont have to dismantle my house.

That is good that you have had a relaxed day Roobarb.  I can picture your walk on the beach.  Lovely apart from the stink if the seaweed.

I think some manufacturers are a bit economical with the truth when it comes to portion size.

I have not long since got back from work.  It was very cold at the bus station tonight.  I think I will have to hunt out a hat and gloves soon if it continues cold like this early morning and late at night.  I was looking at Find A Grave on the way home on the bus.  Someone has very kindly fulfilled my request for a photo of the war grave of my Great Uncle.  I wanted to write and thank this person but apparently there is no email for them and they are not accepting messages.  Moon was very bright tonight as I walked home from the bus stop.

Roobarb - your walk along the beach sounds wonderful, despite the stinky seaweed! Good to get out into the fresh air and fill your lungs with all the salty sea air... sounds like you deserved a quiet day after that! Always good to chat with friends too!

OH up before me this morning could hear him emptying the dishwasher always a plus... usually find things in odd places or left on the kitchen counter if he's not sure where they go!
It was quite sunny and not cold so decided to strip one if the beds and get it in the washing machine...
Sat and chatted after breakfast... wondering how his golf pal was after his visit to the hospital... also his other golfing buddie who lives up the lane and spends the winters in SA but decided not to go back... they're not used to English winters and are quite worried about the cold, early darkness... hope we're able to be of some support but if we're all still not really supposed to be inside that might be difficult... all their family live quite a distance away too... it's a dilemma for us all really...
Gave the upstairs a good clean... so now whole house is done for the week...
Had lots of bags of tree cutting stuff so went off to the local recycle centre... not to long a queue all pretty well organised and only took about 20 minutes..
Called in at the butchers on the way home as hadn't had time on Tuesday... only one in there which was good...
Had lunch when we got back...
Amazing delivery service... new valves for kitchen tap ariived in the post... only ordered yesterday! No time to do it today so a job for the morning... think I'll make myself scarce just in case there's a lot of huff and puff emanating from the kitchen!
OH went off to play golf ...
I went up to my work room to get on with the face coverings...
Skoukd have about 150 to give her when this lot are done...
Had a long chat with a friend... how time runs away with you when your chatting... good to talk though..
OH arrived home about 7pm earlier than he'd said... so didn't get as much done as I'd wanted to as expecting to have dinner later!
We just had ham, cheese & mushroom omelettes with sliced tomatoes from the garden...
Watched some tv whilst knitting...
Another day bites the dust... how time flys when you're having fun!
Another weekend coming round but really every days like the weekend!
And so to bed for a read... The Second Sleep by Robert Harris... hadn't realised it was a futuristic story, not something I normally read but I've enjoyed his other books and this ones caught my imagination and is intriguing!

Hope others have had a good day...

Caroline

Added - RTL and Carol you both posted whilst I was writing...

RTL - hard to think you're already going to need hats and gloves and we're only at the beginning of Sept! What a shame about not being able to communicate with the person who supplied the picture for you....

Carol - good to hear from you despite it not being all good news... at least you all seem to know where you stand in NZ... unlike ours which has different actions for each part of UK.

That is sad about those deaths due to covid.  Especially as one person was only in their fifties.
Interesting to think that you are approaching spring as we here are approaching winter, Carol.
It sounds like you are going to be very busy tomorrow with all that scanning to be done.
I don't know what time difference there is where where you are but it is well after midnight here so I am going to get off to sleep now.  Will look forward to catching up with more posts soon.  Goodnight.

Caroline (as you have mentioned) we seem to have posted at the same time in the early hours .. you seem to have had another filled day.  Wow that is incredible that you have made these 150 face coverings to hand over next time and are knitting as well!  What a Godsend you have been during all this time.  You must be sick of me saying this but I think it is amazing how you keep working like a trojan with your skills.  You have really come up trumps for the NHS/Keyworkers this year.
That is an amazing delivery service re the new kitchen valves considering they were only ordered the day before.  I hope these can be fitted today without too much huff and puff.
I agree it is a shame I cannot communicate with and thank the person who has helped me on Find A Grave because they have a notice up saying they are accepting no messages.  I would have liked to have let them know how grateful I am.  They even wrote out the transcription of my Great Uncle's war grave.  Oh well, I will just have to keep paying things forward by adding my own photos on there for others.

Thanks for letting us know the time difference where you are Carol.  It must be early evening for you now as I write this.  I hope you have had a good day.

Thanks RTL for your kind words... I'm sure I've not done any more than others... in fact one lady has just finished her 100th set of scrubs!
I enjoy sewing and it has been good to do something worth while to help in a small way and kept my sanity!
As a NHS worker you and all your colleagues are the true stars... and coping with long tiring shifts not to mention your gruelling bus journeys day and night! We're all grateful for your hard work.
Have a good day... not sure if you're working or having a well earned rest!

There is a real Autumnal nip in the air early and late as soon as UK goes into September so I imagine a hat and gloves will be a boon at the bus station for you RTL.
It always amuses me how the children run about in T shirts and shorts all year, and my son moans about the cold in Oz, but he hardly ever needs a jumper in winter, and I need one most of the summer usually. :)
We all seem to be plodding along, making the best of avoiding groups and yet trying to have friendly interactions where we can.  It is sad to see NZ has had a couple of deaths despite their control of the virus has been so much better than ours.
Paying it forward is a good thing to do RTL, but I reckon you have plenty of credits on your slate. :D I was really chuffed to help someone a bit last week.  It gives me a buzz for days.
Likewise Caroline who should probably be nominated for an MBE or something.
Check out the beach Roobarb and let us know if it is clean again.
Sunny here. Try to have a good day all.

Went out for a birthday celebration meal last night.

Level 2 NZ rules for restaurants are

Only 1 server per table.   We had at least  3
1 metre separation.  My friend on other side of table was back to back with The next table.
No more than 100 in the venue.  I didn’t count, but if it wasn’t over, it was very close.

So, just have to hope that there were no Aucklanders in there!

Couldn’t believe how busy it was.  I expect that will be our dash for a while.

Hi Caroline,
Just to mention I am not NHS - I work in the care field.  I do agree though the NHS staff are real stars each and every one.  I think PharmaT is NHS - I hope she is okay - we haven't heard from her on this thread for a while unfortunately.

Hi Mowsehowse,
It is hard to know what to wear these days.  It can be warm still through the day but very nippy first thing in the morning or late at night when I am either coming or going from work.  I think I am definitely going to hunt out a hat and gloves for my nightshifts coming up.
That's great Mowsehowse that you were able to help someone out last week.  It is nice to be in a position of being able to help someone else - this does give a buzz.
I signed up with Find A Grave last year but then really got caught up with it once more freedoms happened and I wanted to have a purpose to my permitted walks.  I am so glad I joined as I think this site has so many merits.  There can be a wealth of info shown by inscriptions.  It is so easy to do on my Kindle too, just press, press, press regarding taking photos and uploading.  I am technologically challenged though and know virtually nothing about using GPS and I am not one of those people who can map a cemetery in an afternoon.  ;) ;D I have got over a thousand images up now though in my own plodding way of adding just a few here and there each day from a collection taken. So not too bad.
I agree Caroline deserves an MBE for indefatigible efforts - although I am sure she will be too modest to agree with us.

Hi Mckha489, it is great that you have joined us - another person from NZ!  :)  I hope you enjoyed the meal.  Having over 100 in will certainly have helped the economy of this restaurant.  It is so sad to keep hearing about job losses through falls in business.  I suspect many more families will be seeking aid from food banks over here as time goes on.  It does seem a juggling act for some businesses to try to keep afloat whilst also having to reduce custom to fit in with safety requirements.

Mowsehowse and RTL, I thank you both for such accolades !
I know personally of only three people who received an MBE...
My father during the war for his unstinting service in difficult times...
my aunt for the tremendous work she did for limbless soldiers
And finally someone who to all of us in the village a true Christian... she was one of those rare people who was kind, gentle would do anything for anyone, never had a bad word to say about anyone just one of the worlds nice people, she was nominated by the village and we were all delighted when she was awarded it...
I could never measure up to any of these people but feel very humbled you would think so!
Now back to sewing!

Good morning Carol and Mckha! Hope Saturday's news in NZ is better.

Everyone was so busy typing this morning while I was still trying to rally myself round!

RTL, it's certainly getting a lot cooler in the mornings, it's always difficult to know what to wear in these mid season times. What great work you've done for Find a Grave. Do you have to post the photos when you've just taken them or do you just add them from your files as and when?

Mowsehowse, I'll let you know how the beach is getting on next time I visit.  :) I've taken many photos there over the years, I've never seen it like it was the other day. Since they built the new sea defences in town there have been changes to the beaches further along. They should have just left the spring tides to come lashing up onto the prom.

Caroline, hope things have been calm inyour household during the fitting of the tap.  And there you are just casually dropping in that yur father was an MBE and so was your aunt! Are you sure you want to mix with the hoi polloi on here?  ;D ;D

Hi Roobarb,

Re the Find A Grave photos I just take random photos as I walk around the cemetery.  They are just there on the photo part of my Kindle and I just add these on Find A Grave as and when I get time.  A little here a little there and it all seems to add up.

Caroline, wow that is quite something that both your Father and Aunt were MBEs!  You come from distinguished stock!  I think I would second Roobarbs comment about the mixing with the hoi polloi. ;D ;D ;)

Nah- there's nothing fancy about me! My Dad always said he got his for building the NAFFI!...

sadly I never met my Aunt but she sounds a real character, she was also in Lloyd George's Government as some minion or other and visited China with Stafford -Cripps wife meet Chiang -Kai - shek and Mao! Found all that out from newspaper reports... has a hospital named after her too apparently and also was awarded a CBE.....afraid im just a regular human being....

RTL - I think it's great you take lots of pics of graves... I do look at our in the village but they are very hard to read and leaning at all angles! I do like walking round cemetery's though as I find some of the inscriptions fascinating.... sounds a bit weird doesn't it... I'm quite normal really!

Good to hear from our NZ friends as you've how things are for them during all this covid situation...

Very impressive despite your modesty Caroline.  :)

I have quite a lot of photos of graves, maybe I should join and upload them to Find a Grave.

I think that would be a great idea for you to join and add your photos Roobarb.  It is quite easy and quick to join.
I think memorial inscription photos can be a boon for descendants because of all the useful info that might be provided - such as dates of birth and death, other family members, cause of death, occupation etc.  Sometimes finding a grave helps lead people to where their ancestors ended up and with common names memorials can help people work out if they have tracked the right ancestor.

I added a photo recently for a grave at Whitley Bay and a descendant saw it and  added lots of family photos and sent date edits.  So now there is almost a small family tree up which will be very helpful no doubt to others.

I had a short walk around Preston Cemetery yesterday and found something unusual for one of my ancestors.  His wife, him and a son have two exactly the same memorial inscription placed on stones in two different sections of the cemetery!  Sections J and M.  I have never come across this type of thing before.  Only difference is that in section J the stone has a slightly longer stone base.  I will have to put this info now on Find A Grave.

I like Cemeteries , and think it a great shame that so many are neglected.
It used to be a tradition almost that Sunday was the day graves were visited.
There were always flower stalls along the pavement in front of the gates at Philip’s Park Cemetery Manchester.
Every Sunday.
Families move and younger members are perhaps not aware of where their ancestors are.

A huge ,voluntary project was started to record the graves at Queen’s Park Cemetery (has another name which eludes  me) Manchester.
Hoping to do that before many were lost ,to vandalism etc.
I went twice but it was difficult and sadly my OH had health problems so we stopped going but I did,as a bonus find a good few family members.

Got a lovely photograph once of a robin, sitting on a spade handle ,leaning against an ivy covered gravestone ,near where a grave was being opened for another burial.
My OH thought I was “ morbid”.
Off to Salford Royal today ,a cancellation was offered to me so I accepted.
Son will take me.
It is a good job I had him!
Congratulations to you all for your industry , so busy .
I am in admiration of you all.

A big party in a pretty close by house yesterday, very noisy ,.
Surprised my nasty neighbour did not exert his usual charm, he has in the past on one occasion, we were all grateful. - cowards that we were ,but you don’t mess with teenagers ,however he did .
So he has his uses!
Daughter sent a photograph of a little dog, he has  extra toes!
Polydactyl?
Has some challenging behaviour which will be interesting to modify ,but wait and see what today brings .
Well hungry now,not when I first got up.
So cheerio, hope you all have a good day.
Thanks for the news .
Viktoria.

Hope it is nothing major, and all goes well.

Dash! Just lost a long post!
All well ,I have had for a short while a tiny pin head sized crusty thing on my nose.
It came off without bleeding ,came back same size but this time rather inflamed round it.
At  GP’s last week for something else, mentioned it and she looked but  was not really able to decide so referred me .
A cancellation at Salford Royal for today.
Son took me.
All is well ,a bit of sun damage, but not cancer nor pre cancerous.
I now must use sun block even for hanging out washing, combination of  my thin old skin and depleted ozone layer .
I was not too worried but thought if things get tighter I might have a long wait .
( Bolton is in stricter measures at the moment ) so decided to set things in motion.
When I look like Nanny McPhee ,if I wish I can have it removed.

Cold and bright today.
Lovely to get out , and people so kind and efficient at the hospital.

I thought of all of you making scrubs , working and helping to keep things going .

Ate the first fig from my little tree today.
It suddenly went purple from green.
So sweet and soft.
Some more almost ready, it has happened suddenly .
Must let daughter know. It was a Mothering Sunday present a couple of years ago.
I have fed it well, and it is in a sheltered sunny position.

Well folks we are in Autumn now.
A lovely season , before we know it Christmas will be here again.
Wonder if we will be able to Christmas  shop.
Perhaps the excesses will be less this year.
I miss Christmas as it was, really a family time.

Well Flash Harry has had his first day at school .
A few tears seemingly and the teacher wanted to know who —— was,as she would be missing him, FH soon settled though ,he was talking about my daughter’s dog ,they are best mates and she has been with him a lot .
Actually she was missing him!

Well must put the kitchen to bed .a nice cuppa and bed .
Another day tomorrow.
Viktoria.

Viktoria - glad to hear that your hospital visit was swift and efficient and that all is well.... apart from having to use sun block even for hanging out the washing!
Lovely to enjoy your first fig of the year.... my mums favourite..

Good to hear that FH has now settled into school life... it's a big deal for the younger ones... my grandson starts in reception on Monday week, they have a staggered start - he can't wait to go.
