Title: Australian electoral rolls How to search via address only
Post by: mcvicars on Saturday 05 September 20 10:39 BST (UK)
I have a relative at an address under her maiden name, living with her partner. They subsequently married but I can’t locate a marriage for her. I’d like to find out her partners name. Someone once sent me details of other people who lived at the same address of another ancestor but I can’t figure out how to use Ancestry’s electoral roll search to just look up an address in a certain year, (without a name); it only seems to let me search if I have a name. I’m sure it’s quite simple & someone will respond with a simple answer - thanks in advance if you can, mcvicars

There are restrictions on searching historical marriages - eg in NSW you will only find indexes to marriages which occurred over 50 years ago. Other States have similar cut off dates.

Have you looked on Trove in case there is a notice of their marriage or engagement? If the person is deceased you may also find a notice which mentions wife/husband/children.

I am not aware that the electoral rolls can be searched by address - the books are/were in  alphabetical order by surname. Depending on the date, some addresses are quite vague eg just the street name.

If you have her under her maiden name and she is living with her partner can you not look up that specific electoral roll to find out his name?

Added: I have just had a look and cannot see any way to search by address.
What State did the people live in?
What year is the electoral roll you are interested in?
If you are sure they are both deceased and you are willing to give her name someone may be able to help you.

I have had this same thought many times! It would be very eye opening if you could actually do that but so far I haven't found a way either. One thing I remember trying was to put the name of the street in the "keyword" box but I don't think that was successful.

You can narrow it down an awful lot by going to Catalogue, Australian Electoral rolls, the use the thing on the side to choose state and parts of  the state
