I have hit a brick wall trying to find any Foster ancestors. Joseph Foster (mariner) was born around 1832 and came to New Zealand in 1853. He was followed by his mother Elizabeth (Eliza?) and sister Amelia Elizabeth in 1858. An 1841 census has people of that name living in Little Corman St London with a James Foster the same age as Joseph. Other than that I can't find any other evidence of a Foster family with a mother Elizabeth & children Amelia & Joseph. Foster is my children's surname and I would love to be able to trace their lineage.

Have you a marriage certificate for John or Amelia? What does it say about their parents?
What about the death certificate for Elizabeth?
Added, but if married before 1875 then not so useful.
What about death certs, or birth certs of children born after 1875?

For the benefit of others here is the passenger list for the Strathallan, arrived Lyttleton Jan 1859

Is this card at Canterbury Museum your family?

“Joseph Foster, Mariner b ‘34 marr 10.9.56 Amelia Ann Wells, d Thomas Wells, mariner
Son Wm Thos b Lytt. ‘66 storeman, marr 9.12.91 Eliz. Frances Taylor. Etc
“? Amelia Foster day of Joseph Foster & Amelia* marr Enoch Barker, 2nd wife, 14.2.59. Lytt. M.R.

So, do you know anything about Enoch Barker who she married straight off the ship. Another family I have researched who did a similar thing were known to each other in England.
And, is Elizabeth on the Strathallan perhaps not a mother but some other relation?

They met on board ship! How unhelpful :(
Link to his “card”. His wife died on the voyage

Ok, if this death is The mother of Joseph the Mariner, she is 60 at death on 1860
Yet 49 the previous year. Have you reconciled that in anyway
1860/2018 Foster Eliza 60Y

I could be way off the mark, and I am not saying I am right - but in my research, I have a family who lied about an older members age, as they were too old to travel, so they took a few years of the age, so they could come to NZ.

Hello,
There are a few trees on Ancestry for this family. If you have an subscription perhaps try and make contact with one of the members.
Deleted what I had put down.

yes that is the family I'm researching but the information is incorrect. The Amelia Foster who married Enoch Barker is not the daughter of Joseph & Amelia Foster. She is the sister of Joseph Foster

I agree with you Mckha489 that the actual Certs need to be purchased.
It appears to me that Anc Tree owners have not brought them and are just going by Cemetary Records and NZBMD Index.
Looking at the 1851 Census for the Wells Sarah was nee SCUDDER;
WELLS, EDGAR mmn SCUDDER
GRO Reference: 1844 D Quarter in DARTFORD UNION Volume 05 Page 88
WELLS, EDWIN mmn SCUDDER
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in DARTFORD UNION Volume 05 Page 84
Thomas Packman WELLS married Sarah SCUDDER 18 Oct 1830, Deptford, Kent
(Familysearch.Org)
F/S also has Bapts of the children of Thomas Peekman/Peckman Wells and Sarah;
Rosetta/James William/Edger/Edwin, but I cant see Amelias.
1851 Thomas Wells is born Knockholt, Kent
Knockholt is a village and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England. It is located 5 mi north west of Sevenoaks & 5.7 mi south of Orpington, adjacent to the Kent border with Greater London.

I haven't purchased the death records so I don't have the information. I have information of the other branches of the family. Wells, Scudder etc. Its the Foster branch where I have drawn a blank
-
Well, if it was me I would buy both, but if I had to choose 1, I would buy Amelias death cert, the printout, since she was the one who died first so Joseph was around for them to ask for information.
(And then buy Joseph’s later anyway :))
-
I can't really afford the extra expense which is why I was hoping that someone on here may have some information
-
Certificates/printouts are usually the last resort to get, when other avenues of research has been exhausted. Usually the stepping stone, to help us go backwards/forwards in our search :)

With Christmas not far off maybe someone could buy the Cert/s for you as it looks like your only way to go back with the Fosters :)
