Name on marriage certificate is given as John McLaren but certainly doesn`t look like John. Any ideas?
-
Looks like John me.
-
Any idea of the occupation of Agnes? Some type of powerloom weaver.
-
Agnes is some kind of weaver but do not see power loom however it says in brackets finisher if that is any help.
John's entry is Single and then on same line John -- or at a pinch iain which is john in Scotland -- he is a tilemaker not filemaker ie worked in clay not iron -- files were made in early days by blacksmiths, tiles for floor, walls or roofs.

sorry just reread bracketed on his says bachelor and on her spinster not finisher
-
might be something then tambourine weaver ? fancy tambourine weaver or hand tambourine weaver -- a way of making lace?

I think John's occupation is Sail-Maker, and Agnes' is Wincey Powerloom Weaver. An internet search for "wincey powerloom weaver" brings up a number of other examples.
Wincey is a Scottish name for a type of cloth also known as Linsey-woolsey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linsey-woolsey
-
I also see John's occupation as Sail maker. Compare the S in "Signed."
-
I'm seeing [something] Cambric Weaver for Agnes.
-
I suggest you contact Scotland’s People and request a clearer copy - they are very good with this type of request.
In the mean time, have you located John on any census to see if his occupation tallies with any of the suggestions given here?
Added: there is a John McLaren with wife Agnes and two young children on the 1881 census who appear to be this family - John is a Sailmaker.

I agree with Arthur - it's Wincey Powerloom Weaver.
Add - I think wincey is possibly the same or related to winceyette. Does anyone remember sheets, night wear, etc. made from winceyette :)
-
Definitely John McLaren, Sail Maker - I have new spec's 8)
But should you send an email off to SP they will not grant your request as yet (as recent as last Friday) stating they are working from home but they will refund your credits.

Thank you everyone for your observations.
I now believe occupation to be "wincey powerloom weaver"
