Title: William Slater's grandchildren
Post by: g eli on Friday 11 September 20 22:34 BST (UK)
William Slater of East Retford left a will proved July 1810. The will is fairly straightforward, his wife Elizabeth is the beneficiary, there is mention of his daughters Elizabeth Slater and Sarah Slater (both unmarried at this time). These people I know about. There is also a mention of his grandchildren Anne Slater and Henry Slater it is these two people I am trying to find out about, I can't find a son born to William and Elizabeth and baptisms are not helpful since I have no idea of the ages (although I think they may be underage in 1810)  or who their parents may be. Suggestions as to how I might proceed would be most helpful.

Hi Liz

You might be interested in this Rootschat topic of a year ago,by another Rootschatter: "Alexander."

It explains that the grandchildren Ann & Henry (the baptisms Colin found) are  two of the three illegitimate issue of the daughter Elizabeth prior to her marriage in 1822.

edit: add:
Oh, I have just see you've seen and responded to that topic.  Is there a reason why you appear not to have accepted  Ann and Henry as illegitimate issue of Elizabeth?

Cheers

Thank you Colin, for your suggestion.Elizabeth baptized 1783 Kneesal, And Sarah 1786 Weston are the right daughters, the baptisms of Anne and Henry would fit. This family and its descendants seem to move from Kneesal to Weston on a fairly regular basis.
Ambly I had considered that either Elizabeth or Sarah had illigitimate children but couldn't find the baptisms. Thank you for the link I had forgotten about that conversation.

Hi Liz,

I have done a bit of research into each of Elizabeth Slater's children.

ANN SLATER, bap. 14 Dec 1803 in Kneesall, Notts
m. William Turtle in 1827 in Kneesall.
On the 1841 census, living at Kneesall, also with them is Ann's great aunt Ann Taylor (who died there in 1845).
d. 31 May 1880 at Newark

HENRY SLATER, bap. 26 Apr 1809 in East Retford, Notts
Unable to trace any further record.

WILLIAM SLATER, bap. 23 Feb 1813 in Norwell, Notts
m. Phoebe Footitt in 1838 in Newark
d. 23 Mar 1895 in Newark

Elizabeth Slater went on to marry Thomas Wilson and had three further children at Norwell, Notts - Elizabeth (1822), Sarah (c.1824), and Thomas (1828).

There are also a few other wills that help piece the family together, here are my notes on these. These uncles' wills confirms that the above three Slaters are all Elizabeth's children.

GEORGE TAYLOR (uncle of Elizabeth Slater)

Will of George Taylor, miller and baker of Kneesall, Notts, dated 29 Jan 1812.
To sister Ann Taylor all land in the parish of Kneesall and all goods. At Ann's death, the same to be equally divided between nieces Elizabeth Slater and Sarah Slater, provided half the share of Elizabeth Slater be paid in equal shares to Ann and Henry the natural children of Elizabeth Slater, to be paid at age 21. At the death of nieces, lands to Ann and Henry.
Appoints sister Ann Taylor executrix, and at her decease appoint nieces Elizabeth Slater and Sarah Slater executors.
Witnessed by Richard Lee, Samuel Spafford, and R. Cox.
Proved 10 Jun 1824 by Ann Taylor of Kneesall, spinster, sister. Sworn under £100. Died 7 Jan 1824.
Deposition of Richard Lee of Kneesall, farmer, dated 15 Nov 1824, that the testator's intent was that William Slater, brother of Ann and Henry Slater, have an equal share, he being born after the making of the will.

JAMES TAYLOR (uncle of Elizabeth Slater)

Will of James Taylor of Everton, co. Nottingham, miller, dated 15 Feb 1825.
To wife Elizabeth, all goods.
To Thomas Templeman of Norwell, co. Nottingham, farmer, and James Wallhead of Weston, co. Nottingham, farmer, all land in Everton, to hold in trust and sell and become residue of estate.
To wife Elizabeth, the interest and dividends of £400 invested, paid half yearly. If she marries then she to be paid £500 for her sole use.
To nieces Elizabeth Wilson and Sarah Templeman, £1400 (or £900 if wife Elizabeth remarries), equally divided.
To sister Ann Taylor, interest of £400.
To Ann Slater, Henry Slater, William Slater, and William Templeman, son of Thomas Templeman, said sum of £400 divided equally after sister’s decease.
To Elizabeth Wilson and Sarah Templeman, rest and remainder divided equally.
Appoint Thomas Templeman and James Wallhead, joint executors.
Witnessed by F. Raynes, William Martin, and Samuel Gray.
Codicil, dated 15 Feb 1825.
Revokes share bequested to niece Elizabeth Wilson, with her part of the £1400 and residue be invested, with the interest and dividends  to paid to her.
To Ann Slater, Henry Slater, and William Slater, and other children of niece Elizabeth Wilson, equal part of her share, after Elizabeth’s death.
Witnessed by F. Raynes, William Martin, and Samuel Gray.
Second codicil, dated 28 Jul 1836.
Revokes bequests in trust to Thomas Templeman and James Wallhead, instead all real and personal estate to wife Elizabeth.
After her decease, the same to Thomas Templeman and Edward Dean of Mattersey Thorpe, Co. Nottingham, farmer, in trust as previously stated.
Appoints wife Elizabeth sole executrix.
Witnessed by William Broughton, F. Raynes, and William Lce. Baines
Proved 17 Mar 1846 at York.

Thank you Alexander, for the information, the later wills definitely help solidify my research, which I thought was right but the more information about a person the better.
I am interested in the Taylor side particularly if you have gone further back than Elizabeth and James.

Hi Liz, I think I have your email address so will send through some info on the Taylors there. Elizabeth Taylor's paternal grandfather and her maternal grandmother were both Taylors from Laxton and were cousins themselves, all very convoluted. The Slater side is still a bit of a mystery, not sure where William Slater came from. I do still need to check the Weston burials to see if he was buried there in 1809.
