Hi Aussie Michelle,

Can you please state how you know he was born in Ballarat? What document did you get this information from and what are the details contained on there?

Jo  :)

The marriage cert would give better and more reliable information if it has been reconciled with the church records, do you have that cert?

Hi Jo, you asked
Can you please state how you know he was born in Ballarat? What document did you get this information from and what are the details contained on there?

So his grandson was the first confirmation & the death certificate of Joseph Mack also states Ballarat ( as wanted to back this up). It states his father as Joseph Mack & mother as Mary Jane.

(I wanted a maiden name to build but nothing - not even stating what the father did)

I am stuck completely. I have spent hours searching & come up with nothing.
Have found several 'Mack' arriving by boat but none of them appear to fit in time frame

Extremely frustrated

Cheers

Hi Debra. I did think of which one to purchase & I thought the death would be better as the marriage is NSW & because of the year of marriage it wouldn't contain much at all. - pertaining to the parents (as it is them I am interested in). I have been told that the name goes back to Scotland?? But this is all anyone knows.

I cant find anything on them whatsoever??

Cheers Michelle

I agree with Debra,  what info on the NSW marriage, fingers crossed it has been fully reconciled back to church registers.  Even if that has not happened,  you should be able to validate what info is recorded about the bride and groom, and also their official witnesses.   If you dont have that cert,  please don't order the real cert cert, but consider ordering an official transcription.  It is cheaper, but also it is prepared by very experienced professionals who have been deciphering NSW clergy's scribble .... for many years.

So once  you know which denomination and the clergy, it is a matter of finding the church register which should have all the elusive details missing from the civil records.... including parents names and occupations ....  :)

Hi JM,

Thanks again for your wonderful advice (You have a assisted me on numerous occasions).
Most definitely a transcription this is what I did for my friend with the death cert.
So I will suggest this for more information & I will return to this Forum

I had thought that the year of marriage would produce less. Hence getting the death cert transcription.

I can tell you that Joseph (the son) who married Margaret got married in the middle of nowhere literally.
Name: Joseph Mack Spouse Name: Margaret Balsar Marriage Date: 1890 Marriage Place: New South Wales Registration Place: Wentworth, New South Wales Registration Year: 1890 Registration Number: 7593

Cheers again Michelle

Yes,  it is still a sparse area out around Wentworth but the clergy recorded greater depth in their own registers and forwarded only summary info.

I am on e reader, do cannot do live links... BUT ...
NSW police Gazette freely available via Trove....
Wednesday 29 April 1863 ... page 129...
Deserters from HM Service ... so deserting from the British Army.... two chaps deserted 9 April 1863 at Melbourne, from the Royal Artillery and noted as 'Both these men wore Regimentals'  ... one was a chap named Hugh MACK,  from Newry,  aged 31 years ... so right age to be a Dad to a young family.

Hi JM
Food for thought!!

I know as I said the father of Joseph is called Joseph BUT maybe he had Hugh in the second name??
I never thought of the navy??

I know the side goes back to Scotland somewhere?? (No idea when?)
But the navy is a thought.
I dont even know if he was married in England or met his wife Mary outhere??
Extremely annoying!!
There is nothing to go on  - So this is a thought navy or a merchant seaman??
That's the trouble no ones in amongst 20 of the Mack relatives have found anything! My friend has asked all of them who have dabbled in research.

Thank you - Also not sure about the Hugh name as the family is huge & there is not 1 Hugh amongst them as a first or second name. Just a thought also
This name is driving me to whits end.

Cheers Michelle

Scotland is a strong possibility.  One of my ancestors was named Mack, early 1700's. They lived and stayed in Prestonpans, East Lothian, but I haven’t explored the wider family or descendants.

Worth a quick check through family search.org or Scotlandspeople for a possible Joseph but you will still need to confirm the link.

Hi JM
When you wrote British Army deserter.

Army in the colonies as garrison forces until 1870.

Royal Artillery ... Army. - DO you mean he could possibly be an army deserter??
Also I know one of the sons of Joseph was on Barham station? Can't remember which one
Joseph also worked on stations up there & a lot of the family is buried in Barham Cemetery.

I have been trolling over the Family search again for immigration to Victoria. I did find a J mack 40  but of course the wife is as Mrs Mack & they had a son george (No one knows if there were more childrens)
Cheers Michelle

Hi jc26red
I have just finished pouring over family search again & thanks for that.
That's the thing I have nothing to compare to?
This is where the trouble starts.
The son is Joseph is no problem at all with him or his wife and family but he - is proving to be very difficult as there is nothing I can find where he is beginning such as the parents except for 2 names - which are no help.
I have been doing this man since 3 months ago & I can not find a lead anywhere

Thanks for your ideas much appreciated
Cheers Michelle

Yes,  I mean that the NSW Police Gazette of 29 April 1863 at page 129 has details of two soldiers who deserted from Her Majesty's Royal Artillery in Melbourne.   Their descriptions are in the notice, it's freely available on Trove.   :-X probably also available on subscription websites, including ones you need to pay money at,  but definitely at the free website, Trove.

So a soldier named Hugh MACK deserted his military unit in Melbourne.  He was in uniform (regimentals) so he may well have moved into the colony of NSW passing himself off as on leave or similar.
