Title: "Who do you think you are?" October
Post by: ThrelfallYorky on Friday 25 September 20 15:48 BST (UK)
I'm probably behind the times, but I spotted something earlier today about David Walliams and Ruth Jones (?) being in next line-up. Anyone know the rest of them?

David Walliams
Ruth Jones (Gavin and Stacey)
Liz Carr (Silent Witness)
Jodie Whittaker (Dr Who)

Can't wait - something new to watch - thankyou for letting us know.  ;D

Is that just to whet our appetites, or are there really only 4 episodes?

At least I've heard of all four - there are so many 'celebrities' around these days who I have no idea who they are. Not keen on one of them but will probably watch him anyway, even though I suspect he'll approach it in the same manner as the Whitehalls did in the last series, which I didn't appreciate.

No Parky. Shame?  ;D ;D

I am sure he has a gateway ancestor somewhere, but where.

Like you, Jillruss, I really disliked the Whitehall double act - and earlier, Ann Reid giggling her way through.
Thanks, I'd not noticed anything in "Radio Times" about it, Romilly. I'll have to take another look - I must've missed it.

Me too - I only got my RT yesterday and don't remember seeing anything about WDYTYA?

If you find it before me (making tea) , can you list them on here for us please?

I think I saw it on the Radio Times email update that I get sent.

It’s also on the Digital Spy Forum, but I can’t see the full list, - it just seems to feature the first four?

Romilly.

Radio Times online :

"Broadchurch and Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker will face “some fraught family history” when Who Do You Think You Are? returns to BBC One with a four-part series in October."

I don't know if they're going to show the one on Ronnie Wood and his canal boating ancestors, which they should have in the can - especially since it seems a shortish list otherwise

"Who Do You Think You Are?" offers us all the possibility of understanding new research.
This program has been helpful to introduce people to discovering their own family history.
Yes it all comes polished without years of brick walls and frustrations of travelling down the tracks of dead ends (like most of our journeys), but it is always interesting and ventures into places unknown.

Through this program I have learnt much of my ancestors' social history.
Convicts transported to the great South Land of Australia, the Industrial North of England, the laws of bankruptcy and the shocking world wards which killed millions.
I hope one day  the WDYTYA? team would show an ordinary person and their frustrations and delights as they rediscover who they are.
We are like be to seen and known ..

Thank you to all at roots web for years of encouraging support.
Turramurra
P.S.
Still hopeful my Prussian ancestor had blue blood !!

BBC Scotland did a show where they had everyday people doing research on their family.  Wish I could remember what it was called and wish they would make a new series.

Hi Pharma
Was that the one called ‘The Generation Frame‘ ?
I really enjoyed that series. They helped people out with the work they had already started and then they were presented with a stunning piece of artwork at the end depicting the main people discovered in their research.

"Coming Home" and they're ancient so not on iplayer

Michael Sheen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSqs5E2QKR0 which I watched and enjoyed

Shakin' Stevens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9O_KAJ4QqM&t=81s which I've not watched yet

I've searched for others in the series but found none

OK. But links there if anyone needs them.

Iplayer does seem to get rid of things quickly. Going off topic here, but BBC Scotland did a short series on Glasgow Central Station, and I caught most of the episodes but the one I really wanted (where they go underneath and find the hidden unused platforms), was missing. (There are some on Youtube but I've no idea which is the right one). Good luck finding the slate mining programme.

Glad to see a new WDYTYA series coming!  I will watch for it on iPlayer (my only access to BBC TV unfortunately).

There is also an excellent American genealogy series called "Finding your roots"  - there are a lot of full episodes on YouTube.  It's hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., and while the main focus is on black history, not all the episodes are about that.  He usually has 2-3 celeb guests, and he walks them through their ancestry by means of a 'Life Book'.  At the end of the show, they are each presented with a beautiful chart of their ancestry.

Great news.

Got me thinking of the high’s and low’s of past episodes.

Mathew Pinssent, all the way back to God

Sir Patrick Stewart, WW1 trauma

Ainsley Harriot, GGF was not a slave but a white slave owner.

Alistair McGowan, finds he has a large Indian family still bearing the family name.

Kim Catterall, life and times of a Scouser family

Chris Moyles and life in the slums was the most depressing

Finally

Danny Dyer, XGreat Grandson of King Edward III, PRICELESS.

I would love for Steve McFadden, David Jason and John Nettles to do theirs on WDYTYA. In regards to Nettles I liked him in Bergerac as an action man, whereas Midsomer he was sedate and boring, and the show itself is quite boring.

Looking forward to seeing all your views on the new episodes. Will wait and see what you think before I watch them.

I've found most of them a bit boring lately. I find they tend to focus on the same topics, WW1 and WW2, which while interesting in it's own way - I feel like they've done so many times.

These days I tend to prefer the ones where someone has roots abroad as they tend to cover something I'm not already aware of.

Just experienced one of those peculiar coincidences: earlier today on the way back from a break on the Isle of Wight my wife and I called in at Winchester and visited the Cathedral and the Horse Power military museum. Switched on the box and there was the museum!  Never ever seen any reference to It on the tele before! At least Jodie was aware of her uncle Walter - I only discovered the details of my father’s older half brother after he died and he lived to well over 90!

Quite enjoyed this episode, but it did seem to concentrate on very few aspects of Jodie's tree - the gt-uncle and the mine workers/owners.  It was interesting how the family had explained the grandmother's middle name - Verdun - in memory of gt-uncle Walter's death in WW1, only for it to be discovered that he didn't die at Verdun at all and that the name was simply a historical reference to the battle.

Aren't they otherwise doing what some family historians despise and just name collecting if they simply go back with ancestors and bare bones.  It puts a bit of meat on those bones by digging around on particular threads for just 2 or 3 ancestors each programme.

Personally I prefer it.

I enjoyed it too. What a pleasant, down to earth young woman who was totally immersed in the subject. Loved her plain speaking dad as well!

Only last week I discovered a 2nd cousin who was born in 1916 and named Verdun Dixey (male). How times change: we'd no sooner think of doing that nowadays than naming children after pop stars etc. or would we...

I wonder if anyone got lumbered with being christened El Alamein in 1942?  ;D

I agree that I usually like WDYTYA to go a bit further back (but not as far as Edward 1 or even god) but I don't think it was necessary in this case.

Still not sure about next week's episode and David Walliams who I worry might try treating the whole thing as a joke a la Whitehalls. My tv screen barely resisted a foot through it when their episode was on. However, I have seen a short trailer for his episode and he seemed quite serious + he appears to have fairground ancestors, as do I, so I shall have to watch it. I need a new telly anyway!!  ;D

I thought this was a good episode. As has been said before, Jodie seemed vey down to earth, plus a lot more aticulate than some previous celebs have been.

It just shows how family legend arises! I`ve no-one named after a battle, but I`ve had quite a few instances where the legend has proved to be just that!!

Pheno im sure many were named after generals too
My cousin has Horatio nelson Ashcroft b 1831 whose son.had same name.

I seem to remember finding a Florence Nightingale SMITH who turned out not to be connected to our lot.

There are also children named after town of conception which is more romantic than a battlefield name .

Quite a few of my Jewish relatives anliscized or completely changed their names to a town they came from or arrived in RUBINS became KURLAND ...so LANDSMAN became LONDON .
BENJAMIN  became BENNETT after street he went to school in + one dna march dosent know ancestors original name ..probably MENDELSON  butb he chose MALVERN because it bagan with.M and hes saw a poster of Malvern hills

I quite enjoyed it - like others, I do find it interesting when the lines go further back than the last few generations, even if it does all then turn out to be "Ag Lab" with trimmings. After all, most of us seem to trickle back to the early 1800s on most lines fairly easily, with help of parish records and censuses, without all the professional help that WDYTYA? has.
Like you, a few - the Dyer one (forgot his first name) the Whitehall double act, Ann Reid - had made me swear never to watch it again, but ... we can't resist, can we?

but ... we can't resist, can we?
No  ;D ;D ;D

I did feel there were assumptions made, for example that John Walter was living with grandparents without any contact with mother & step father in 1901 [RG13; Piece: 3073; Folio: 74; Page: 12] - after all he could have been staying there briefly while mother had another child....

I wonder if it's only 4 episodes because they had to halt filming in March?

It took me back to when I first started researching and didn't know much:

eg when she looked at census records:

What does serv mean? (servant)
What does that say after coal miner? (hewer)

I wondered why she assumed that Walter had had much contact with his mother, and possibly even a touching deathbed scene .. just because he'd been buried in her local cemetery? He could have grown up totally without contact, secure with grandparents, and it probably was mother being N of K that resulted in him being buried there.

I enjoyed the first episode so much that I fell asleep after 30 minutes and could not be bothered watching what I missed.

Yes WW1 was needless slaughter but all the WDYTYA episodes that include elements of WW1 do seem to be a rehash of the same old type of material.

Whatever the slant of people’s WW1 stories I do find them interesting. The story of David Walliams episode is told in full on The Genealogist website, and his does include WW1.

That ignores all the research that goes on behind the scenes.
And the approx. 10 hours of filming that gets cut!

I've done some research for WDYTYA, which I know won't ever make it to a TV programme.
And I know how many hours of research I charged them for! ;D

Please try to remember that WDYTYA is an entertainment programme for the masses.
It is NOT a tutorial on genealogy!

She's a very engaging character.

I found the WWI sections just as interesting as usual - and this one, where the relative had evidently seen the most awful effects of war on human beings, but enlisted and served just the same, was very moving.  It certainly makes you think about the state of mind of the young men of the country.

The contemporaneous extract concerning the battle and the injuries to the horses as well as the men was heart-rending.  And the thought that, recovered from his wound, he went back to battle when he could have been deployed at home, another contribution to the social background of the time.

Yes, of course people speculate on the circumstances, make up stories, but so do we all - I certainly do - it's not the programme's intention to put a healthy dollop of cynicism into the whole.

And the mining section - well, I had no idea of the possibility of an 8 year old from a mining family dragging himself up from his bootstraps to the financial benefit of his whole family.  And yet even more interesting the long legacy of his name even 40 years after the event of his strike breaking.

And Jodie never asked where the money went!

It has left me with further illumination on the social history of the 20th century, and a reminder to myself that theorising is just that.  Employer made the servant pregnant?  Well, maybe......

Don't you always find that when a newspaper or a tv programme concerns something you actually know something about, there are always details and angles they get wrong or don't consider.....

Well said Igor

Often speculation can lead to investigation and revelation .
When they said they would never know who Walter John s birth father was I did wonder if researchers had looked for affiliation orders baptisms or likely Walter John s in the neighborhood as Jodie had already mentioned English tradition of naming first born son after their father .

It must be so hard to decide what to include and which bits to skim over .
I too thought the WW1 bit was about different aspects than we've had before .

I'm still annoyed about Jodie's mum effectively being punished for something that someone else did before se was born.  I do know how strong feelings are in those communities but it makes me mad when anyone is made ot feel bad about things outwith their control.

Often when a scientifc study is 'quoted' on the TV I find myself yelling "it doesn't say that", "you can't conclude that from those results" "that's not what that means"

A major difference between the Australian WDYTYA and the UK ones, (that I’ve seen) is that the main protagonists all seem to start off by having DNA tests...

Is this because DNA testing is more generally used in Australia?

I couldn’t help thinking that DNA testing would probably have thrown up some clues to the likely Father of Walter John?

I was thinking of the DNA passed on by Jodie Whittaker’s ancestor, - was it her Grandmother or Great Grandmother?

I certainly have DNA matches that I can link beyond that level.

But yes, - probably no way of finding Walter John’s Father, - unless, as bridgetmac says, any Court Orders were made.

That DNA would be his maternal DNA, it was Jodie's Grt Grandmother.  It would be no help in identifying his father.  If you had his DNA and Jodie's you could use that to help identify maternal matches for him in order to narrow down which matches to use to find his father.

You'd have to excavate him and examine DNA from his teeth like identifying King Richard III .
I have affiliation order from 1900 for my nana father's name date of birth address included  but apparently they are rare and it's still not 100percent that named father will be actual father tho DNA has confirmed for my great grandfather and I imagine the judge at time would have taken many factors into consideration.

Did the govt / army pay for gravestones? I f he had named his grandmother or girlfriend as next of kin would they have been entitled to bury him at a graveyard of their choice

I do like to think that John Wilfred was close to his mother and evidence points that way...

I've heard of a few cases where illigitimate sons who'd been shunned before the war were accepted into recomposed families afterwards either by birth father or step father

I find speculation concerning whether Walter was or was not part of the family interesting as it mirrors the thoughts I've had about my step uncle Norman. He was the son of my gran's first husband (who had disappeared off to Australia by 1911) and in the 1911 census is recorded as living with her parents. She would have been heavily pregnant with twins and was living with relatives away from the area. She subsequently died in 1917 in Hull where my grandfather was stationed and my grandfather subsequently volunteered for more active service and was killed in 1918.  Whether Norman was part of his mother's second family I don't know and the 1921 census won't help! I do know that he ended up being sent to the sport's man C.B.Fry's school in Portsmouth which prepared boys for the navy. To say he had an awkward upbringing is probably an understatement but he lived to the ripe old age of 96!

In the case of servicemen who died at "Home" (i.e. in the UK as opposed to theatre of war),  yes the families were given burial options.  They were in due course entitled to a CWGC headstone, but some opted for a private family memorial.  That said, the Imperial War Graves Commission as it was then called was in its infancy, and it was some years before the official headstones were agreed, designed and made.

I can't say I was terribly enthused by this episode, but did find the bit about the huge military hospital interesting, and the fact that the railway line ran right up to it. I found all the worrying about the boy living with his grandparents a bit trying - every census I have looked at has children with grandparents!

Here in the UK there was a regular bi-annual inspection carried out of all graves registered as War Graves.

Any found damaged or unsafe were repaired.

Mind you my experience of this was back in 2005/6 when I was associated with the Building Surveyors who were tasked with the inspections, hence things may have changed since.

Just watched the Ruth Jones episode.

Interesting and tragic, and the specialist who dated the great image of her family was an avenue I would like to see explored some more.

Fascinating section on the setting up of the NHS and the battle the regional Medical Societies had for their voice to be heard.

I found the Ruth Jones episode very interesting..... I had always believed Nai Bevan dreamed up the entire concept of the NHS, rather than taking such a good local model and adapting it for the entire U.K.
What I found really astonishing was Ruth's interpretation of that photo..... she used the word "party", but in my opinion they all looked so sad, I suspect it was probably taken at the time of their father's funeral or within days of Nancy's death.

Enjoyed the Ruth Jones episode. Given her strong personality it was no surprise to find her ancestors had been those who took charge whether it be the men (boats amd medical societies) or the women (coping with any number of kids while hubby’s away at sea). I thought the lady at the centre of the photo was the mother rather than the eldest sister.
I noticed that Ruth’s mam asked her to translate the Welsh of her ancestors and Ruth herself was delighted to find that they were fluent in Welsh which is an interesting insight into Welsh social history.
We tend to almost deify individual heroes of history, attributing much more to them than is merited. I felt that Aneurin Bevan was brought back to earth a bit in this episode. Like Shakespeare he built on the foundation of others and the way the old guard was treated leaves a bit to be desired. (Notwithstanding, the creation of the NHS was an immense achievement.)

I found this episode very interesting, particularly as one side of my family were from South Wales.
Also interesting to see how attitudes have changed to Welsh speaking... I remember my late Uncle (William Havelock Wilson 1894 - 1974) telling me that boys were beaten at School for speaking Welsh, and although my Grandmother was a Welsh speaker, her sons never learnt it. I think that the plan was to eradicate it altogether. How times have changed!

I also enjoyed this one. Some different paths were explored. I already knew a bit about the trade in coal from Wales, due to following an East Anglian seafaring family, but was a bit puzzled by the picture of his ship, which seemed small for Atlantic crossings. Any experts know what it was?

One thing I've always puzzled at when experts closely date photographs by the garments people are wearing is - do people not carry garments forward for years, sometimes even decades? "Best Clothes" would often be used as such for quite a long period of time, so could often seem to lead to an earlier date than a photograph might actually be?
I quite liked this Jones programme, I'd not real idea who the woman was, but the whole thing hung together well, and was very watchable.

Ruth Jones - a very enjoyable episode.  I know of Gavin & Stacey, but have never watched it - maybe I will give it a go now. :)

My Dad's family are from North Wales, but my gran and her two sisters all spoke Welsh when they got together.  I took the language in school for a year and a half, and still retain a smattering of it - I can count to 10, say good morning and Merry Christmas!  LOL  I'm glad the attempts to eradicate it failed.

Cheers all

Knowing that Ruth Jones is a South Walian I thought there would be mining ancestors, but they mostly  seafarers. I found the part about the National Aid Society very enlightening.

Ruth is good actress, under -rated, really. I think she was in Bleak House, but she also was in a drama about the life of Hattie Jacques; well worth watching if you can find it anywhere !!

I hope one day  the WDYTYA? team would show an ordinary person and their frustrations and delights as they rediscover who they are.

Here in Australia a new show has been running for the past month entitled 'Every Family Has A Secret' Each week 2 ordinary people discover things from the past, it can be a missing father and the things he got up to or in one episode an Asian lady, now in her 60's who never knew her real name and what she found out was unbelievable. I have found them far more interesting than a lot of the celebrities that are shown. They advertise at the end of each episode for people to contact them if they have an unsolved interesting past.
Hopefully one day it will make it across to the UK & USA

The experts on the Photo Board here usually comment that if a more formal photo is being taken then the subjects would try and wear their “best” clothes, not something that was seen as “out of fashion”.

In the 19th century women would also often be able to modify their clothes to add fashionable detail.

Young people particularly would be prone to being up to date if they could.

And of course photos were newer and more special and unusual than a snapshot would be today.

I don’t think that just having been on TV makes people more interesting, but I suppose that the program makers are more interested in the viewing figures?
