Title: NSW Service Numbers Army WW2 - COMPLETED WITH THANKS
Post by: ajf25 on Tuesday 29 September 20 06:19 BST (UK)
Hi All,

Just a quick question.

When researching the WW2 Nominal Roll,  many of the soldiers enlisting in NSW have 2 service numbers; one beginning with "NX" and one beginning with "N".  They don't appear to have enlisted twice.  Can anyone tell me why this is the case.

Thanks,
Alison

Same for each state.  So likely they were firstly in the CMF ... and so N would be series B884 files while NX would be series B883.

X for AIF
F for female
N for NSW,  Q for Qld, W for WA, through to NG for New Guinea.

X in WW2 service numbers Australian Forces, indicates that they served overseas.

NX - enlisted New South Wales
VX - enlisted Victoria
QX - enlisted Queensland
WX - enlisted Western Australia
TX - enlisted Tasmania
SX - enlisted South Australia
Not sure re NT (probably went under Sth Aust then)  or ACT

As they were supposed to enlist where they lived, one can read that they were 'late of' or 'formerly of'.
When I worked for Dept Vet Affairs at Greenslopes Repat Hospital, we were told that the initial denoting state of enlistment stayed the same; however, my OH had an NX number but when he moved to Queensland and started getting hospital etc records in Qld, the Department changed his number to QX !!   I have never come across anyone else where they changed the initial enlistment letter, but that doesn't mean there aren't others  ???   ???   ???
